Every year around this time the fishing slows way, way down. This part of Ohio does not often get icy enough for ice fishing, so I usually cease all fishing from about Nov. 1st (give or take) to April 1st (mas o menos).
I put my gear away and hunker down for the cold, dreary, slushy grey of winter.
But I have some end-of-the-season fillets in the freezer, so my autumn ritual will be to make my last few meals of these fish and reminisce about a great season! The lunker catfish, the plentiful and beautiful bluegills, the majestic Fish Ohio crappie, the bulldoggin' bass, the slab Shellcrackers, and all the others that eluded me.
As I sit down to a meal of catfish nuggets, cole slaw, and green beans I will express gratitude. As I chomp on the last of my panfish in a po' boy sandwich I will be thankful for another season of joy, splendor, and nature.
