I thought it might be interesting if we had a discussion, for those of us in the US, on what local measures we will be voting on. In Arizona, the big one is Prop 205 which would legalize recreational marijuana. Another is Prop 206, raising the minimum wage in Arizona in a series of steps to $12 an hour by 2020, with tipped employees making $3 an hour less along the journey to $12 an hour. Also Prop 206 mandates a minimum level of paid sick time for full time employees. Who is next with what measures from which state?

In Massachusetts we have 4 ballot questions: 1) expanded slot machines 2) expand charter schools 3) improve conditions for farm animals aka only allowing cage free eggs to be sold 4) legalizing recreational use of marijuana.

Colorado has prop 69 whch about Unversal, health care for all.

Our ballot initiatives are probably quite silly, I havent researched them yet. There is natterng about early chilchood education so I'm sure that is a money grab issue, otherwise why put it on the ballot? Its not exactly illegal to educate 3 year olds.

I nearly always vote "no" on constitutional amendments even if I like the sentiment of the initiative. I expect the legislators I elect to umm, you know, legislate.

Our legislators apparently don't. Ballot initiatives in this state got us legal cannabis and same sex marriage. The latter was an attempt to ban that backfired on its proponents. I loved watching that happen. Since this is supposed to be a government of the people, I'm always happy when we actually prevail.

Federal election, state election, sheriff election, county election, judicial election, several shall we continue this tax. A should we increase cigarette tax, add a library tax, now be allowed to tax service/other transactions, and then probably the biggest one is the ID thing. (would bring us in line with the nation where most can use their license at the airport)

New Jersey:

Question 1 would authorize two new casinos in northern New Jersey.
Question 2 would dedicate all revenue from gas taxes to transportation projects.

If Question 1 is passed it would end a monopoly in Atlantic City. I'm going to vote no.
If Question 2 is passed, the .23 cent tax increase per gallon of gas that Christie just got passed would hopefully not fall into a big black hole, but I have my doubts. I'm going to vote yes.

Catherine: we here in AZ have passed referendums with dedicated revenue language, and our state legislators just ignore it. They refuse to set the tax base at what is actually needed to run the state, so they continually raid these pots of money that were supposed to be only for state parks, etc. Even our most conservative commentator in our local paper said our taxes need to be raised.

That's what is infuriating about the referendum system - if it ain't funded, it's just words on paper.

I had to look this one up, Rob,and I may be off. Here is what I found for Michigan at Ballotpedia--

Zero ballot initiatives this year--10 were tried and did not fly. Marijuana did not make it.

Other Michiganders please correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I found.

In Maryland in our county there are three, one is a constitutional amendment for appointments and special elections for Attorney General and Comptroller. I tend to vote no on all constitutional changes as I think they are often to keep one political party or another in power. The other two are Charter Amendments . We jsut went to charter government from commissioner style, so these are more appropriate, kind of sorting out how it will continue to work. One is to provide more public notice for changes and the other is to extending the time for the adoption of the budget.

i don't know, well I do vaguely, but there's like some 20 fricken measures on the ballot I need to research (2 or 4 sounds so easy - @#$# slackers). Almost as many measures as we had senators running in the primary.

Wow. We've only got federal, state and local offices, and most of the locals are running unopposed.

How long does it take to vote when you need to plow through that much material?

Yeah, California and San Francisco have everyone else beat as far as quantity. The numbered ones are statewide. The lettered ones are San Francisco. The two voting guides combined are a total of 500 something pages... I always vote absentee since I am often traveling for work so I'll probably wade through everything this weekend and mail my ballot on monday.

In Nevada we have 4 state Questions and one local to my county.
Question 1: Revise statues to require background checks for gun sales
Question 2: Legalize recreational marijuana
Question 3: Allow and open and competitive retail energy market
Question 4: require the Legislature to provide by law for the exemption of durable medical equipment, oxygen delivery equipment, and mobility enhancing equipment prescribed for use by a licensed health care provider from any tax upon the sale, storage, use, or consumption of tangible personal property?
WC1 - increase sales tax to build and improve school in our county
