Making do with what is already in the fridge and cupboards for a few more days - completely doable!:)

Hi Sandy and the rest of you frugal folks I haven't been here for awhile but, I have been reading and following and it is time to get serious.

I need to be here this month....$525. in maintenance on my car today....plugged toilet last week $90.00......Gas Fireplace made to sound like it is not going to
explode $113.00... and found on sale Food Saver I have been wanting forever $139.99 +tax. ([I]am convinced this will save me money in the long term),plus company coming for the weekend and plus Christmas coming......
I need to get my savings back up to par.
---went to gift cupboard to find and wrap up some things to send back with company for her grandchildren....nice amount, cute, fun and practical things found
these had been bought on sale during the year.
---gift of a squash used with frozen spaghetti sauce for supper tonight and lots leftover for lunch tomorrow and some to freeze for soup later this winter
---while looking at my gift closet I decide that I could/should use the lovely new tea towels and not give as gifts (bought on sale) and then discarded to rag bin 6 of my very ugly ones.
---still keeping track of my net worth and low and behold it does go up every month.....worth doing if for nothing else then to remind us!
---yard and gardens put to bed this week...except for the 5 sad looking pumpkins on the front porch....just read a hack that says if I just plunk them in the garden
with some soil on top I will have my own abundance of pumpkins next year....we will let you know....there is nothing else I try to grow that the squirrels/skunks/raccoons/rabbits don't eat first....lol

Well, you have to eat and you must have a working toilet and vehicle, but maybe you can reduce the holiday spending. It is retailers that tell people to buy stuff, but really do we need to?

Am beginning the Turn $2 into $1300+ with Frugal Meals Challenge this month. Challenge is over in the Food section. Would love ideas for success.

November 3rd ...thanks Amaranth I went over and read that thread it is a really good. I need to think more about what I am actually saving.
I loved the idea of setting up the gambling account and food savings I think it might cure a lot of folks of the lottery ticket as a way of getting ahead
I know I fall for it a couple of times a month!
Frugal's today were:
---leftovers for supper
---volunteered and bought snacks from home instead of buying there
---used their supplies and my time to make some large sized Poppies for the Veteran's Day Displays....that made me feel good.

Used an Amazon gift card for $10 for taking a survey, used it on a $50 Wholefood gift card I will send my brother for Christmas, so the giftcard only cost me $40.

Sending more gift cards this year, which will bring down price of postage.

I love reading these posts on what you save and buy and seeing similarities.....I never new you could buy other gift cards with Amazon $$ too...that's cool!! I do know you can buy other gift cards with Target and Walmart, but those are the only ones I know..... I need to stop it with gift cards though, I'm sorta the gift card queen, I love them, and always ask for them for Christmas, better than just stuff (I'm a minimalist now and don't want stuff I don't want, I know it's the thought that counts)...The best gift my one son can ever get me he got me last year, and I told him I want these forever now until I die I think is canvas pictures of my grandkids I can put on the wall....what a beautiful gift and I don't have pictures on the wall, so would love them coated with them all over the place!! What fun! Any, about the food saver, I got one, and I thought the same thing, but I got a huge deal at kohl's, with gobs of specials and rebates and about 3 years ago, paid only $49 after $20 rebate for the $120 model....I love it for sealing things, it's a pain in the butt for sucking the air out, it does, but it's loud and can't be wet or it's messy....But I got the rolled bags on Amazon for only $20 for two sizes 50 feet each....make your own size this way......I'm so set for a long time there, I still do use good ziplocs too for stuff quick though....

So for my Frugal November, still figuring out a budget for myself and my boyfriend and it's after my divorce and I'm not working yet, I still have one at home and want to be around for her still.....I'll work next year when she's in college (I never worked outside the house since like the 80's and that was short lived)....I have enough $$ to make it for a year or two if I budget good, it really shouldn't cost more than $2000 a month (I pay the rent which is really high, but we live really nice here in FL right now for my daughter too)....Boyfriend pays all the bills and food, and I pay the high car insurance (Florida is high!!) and I also have to pay for my insurance which I'm still trying to get, gonna be around $250 I think....and that's all my $$ each month, I am gonna allow another $500 for doing stuff and allowance for my daughter each month, that's separate from the budget.....we are doing the budget $2000 each because that's fair to both me and my boyfriend, and he has the lesser in the bills and stuff, but he can get us all the extras and we live simple, so just simple things and we like to eat out a little too, not too much....I'm working on it, but I see how money doesn't stretch well unless you get everybody on board.....I know that from being married for so long and he always was the spender and I was always trying to figure out how to save, which I did and saved enough for well.....here I am.....divorced and free from that, and I'm gonna do it my way from now on, and my boyfriend is the best and so willing to try and such a different personality....makes me happy!!

So, anyway, great group, and hope to learn lots and share too on here!!

Hi Jackie welcome to this great thread...yes the Food saver is noisy, but is one of the newer models that does a really good job on
wet and messy stuff....Did get a large box of 4 rolls at Costco so will be good for a long time. So far I
am using it a lot so I hope I keep it up.
Frugals today
----kept busy with house cleaning it is great to get company it makes one cleaner better...lol
----Went to the local nice market and got some fruit/veggies, fresh bread and a nice loaf of bread...
really didn't cost that much and will be a lot cheaper then eating out....which my Dsis just loooves to do.
---I did manage to get a discounted Groupon at $17.60 towards what is usually 2 for $38.00 lunch at a
new fancy tea house....so that will be my treat for our lunch on Sunday and I am sure we won't want a large
supper after that. And, she will enjoy being taken out some place different.
---Did buy a nicer Bottle of Wine not frugal like my usual (cheap box....lol) but I only see her a couple times of
year and it a long trip for her to get here....Good to celebrate these things .
Also, like splurge a little because we have done the smart thing and do not exchange gifts on occasions anymore
just if we see something or feel like it.
---I love gift cards too..to give and receive...still nice to get something if people don't have to ship..that has got just too expensive.

Over the years, I've gained quite a bit of weight. I'm in the process of slowly losing it, but I got sick of having too-tight bras. However, I wasn't willing to shell out major money to replace them with larger ones. I spent about $4 on eBay last week to get a couple of packets of bra extenders. Now my bras fit much better, and cost me $4 instead of about $150!

Speaking of bras, I won an eBay auction for a great bra for $24.50 that would normally cost about $80 in the store!

Welcome Jackie, it's great to have you join us! Our greatest frugal accomplishment lately is that we haven't eaten at a restaurant for almost 2 months, which is surely a record for us. DH made us a great dinner at home last night of baked haddock, spinach and sweet potato. It was just as nice as a fine restaurant meal for a fraction of the cost, and healthy too!

11-6-16, 11:54am
Happy November, everyone! Hey, Danna! We've missed you around here! and nice to you have on board, Jackie! Selah, I really dislike shopping for bras! I hate wearing them, too, but needs must. *sigh* Right now I have 4 manageable bras from Lane Bryant, from buy-one get one sales. Mostly I'm the queen of Frankenbras - repaired and resized up and down by cannibalizing other bras/fabrics just to keep from having to buy anything new. Hate shopping for them, hate trying them on, hate paying for them.

Mostly, I have a lot of problems with frugality around holidays and special occasions. I really need to take a closer look at what really brings us value for our money, and what we can do without or with cheaper. My current angst is exacerbated by the fact that we - 3 adults- just got back from 10 days away - 4 spent mostly traveling, and 5 spent with family on Cape Cod. We had car rental, 2 nights in a hotel (coming and going), and spent $$ for medical boarding of one of our cats, who takes meds 3X per day. We of course had some meals out, and bought groceries for our meals in. We also did a little shopping, including a few gifts. We had a lovely time. I would not have missed it for the world, and we spend a lot of time with DH's aunt, who will turn 91 next month. That's the most important part! I lost my own mother just a few days before we left, and we all really needed this break. But, we spent $2200, which makes me cringe. The last time we went it was about a third of that for the three of us, but we drove straight through, and had my late DBIL along (so we were 4 total), and he insisted on paying half of the car rental and fuel. Rosarugosa, thanks for the Trader-Joe and BJ's tip! (and WTG on eating in!!)We didn't buy lobster since only our aunt and DD like it, but we did get some really good stuff for dinners we ate in! Oh well, just needed to whine, sorry. I really have no idea what an "average" vacation costs, it just seems like a lot of money to me!
In other frugal-ness, we offloaded some junk at an antique/flea market yesterday, and we're still selling stuff out of our mall shops and staying ahead of costs, so that's clearing out a bit of inventory (ie, junk) and bringing in some cash. Ate from the pantry and freezer this past week week, but will need an Aldi run this afternoon. I have a minimal list made out and actually checked the pantry first, which doesn't always happen. Looked at my chase account for the week - everything possible goes on the card - and see we have spent very little other than gas since we got back to town last Sunday. Usually we have a bunch of little stuff - DH ice cream or coffee runs, stop at the store to pick up a few things, fast food on days we're not home for dinner, etc. So that's a plus! Found gas all week just ahead of the mark-ups, mended a pair of pants, got new insoles for a pair of shoes I thought I'd need to replace. Cleaned the furnace filters ahead of the season. That's about it....sorry for the long post, I'm having a chatty day, lol.

--lots of leftovers from the extras I had bought (but mostly on sale with coupons) for Dsis visit
on the weekend. So I have been eating them up since Monday supper and will still have some for tomorrow.
---Other then the lunch out with the Groupon I had bought we did not eat out once so not a very spendy weekend
but, it is always wonderful to spend quality time with family....One good thing she is not a shopper so none of that.
--doing some more decluttering so using up samples of hair products, it is surprising how many uses you get from them
--Also, turned a moisture cream bottle upside down and have got several days out of that.
That is all for now....I am going back to check on your Election even if it is giving me way toooo much Stress!
I am feeling like the world is going to a very bad place and glad I have lots of frugal habits to fall back on...

---cleaned and ate a good part of a pineapple I bought on sale last week..yummy
--went to the gym yesterday not really a frugal because I had paid up to March 01/ 2017
but at least each time I go it brings down the price per visit....will not be renewing....time to start walking
and exercising at home.
--watching a Series I got from the library and reading a good book too...all free

Taking all lunches and coffee to work, both DD and myself. Dh generally eats leftovers or opens a can of soup from Aldi. Our fresh fruit this week was from a basket my co-workers sent when my mother died. (Well, actually they didn't send it until we were back in town) I still have a summer sausage and several cheeses in the fridge. It was a big basket! Our only food purchased outside the grocery store this week was our bi-monthly Tuesday $10 purchase of pulled pork at a local BBQ place - Tuesday is a sale night. We have bought lattes or fraps out only twice since our return from the cape. We've had a lot of staff meetings this past week, and I ended up bringing home some cookies and an entire pizza. Watching and reading only things we get from the library or other loans, as usual. That's all I can think of.....

So sorry about your Mom, Early.
Unfrugal: DH & I went out for a very expensive dinner Monday night for no good reason other than we hadn't dined out for a long time. We did really enjoy it, but the price tag was a little crazy.
Frugal: Came in within budget on groceries, and we had two good homemade meals this weekend. Last night's dinner was a chicken stew and we have enough left to freeze for another meal. Got a free bus ride home Friday night because fare collector was out of order. Got Carl Hiaasen's new book, Razor Girl from the library. I've adopted the habit of walking to the library at lunchtime on my weekly work from home day, so I get some bonus exercise as well as free reading material.

Early....sorry I missed the news about your Mom...my thoughts are with you....it is always a very hard time.

A few things I have done in the last week.
---been eating out of fridge and freezer and making sure I am using up always very bit of fresh food I buy.
---In Loblaws for some specials a couple of days ago and they had bread on for $.10 a loaf (not sure why they don't just drop it off at Food Bank)
but, I was glad to see it and bought 10 loaves (the use by date was Nov.19th) using some, making croutons/stuffing/ and crumbs with some.
--Got Gas at Loblaws while I was there and Paid $.88 a litre and used their card and got $.04 a litre in their points
---Using up samples of Shampoo/Conditioner/Hair Treatments and face creams and have not touched my regular stuff in 2 weeks
--Goodwill Store yesterday had 50% off for $32,50 I got 3 sweaters, 4 long sleeve shirts, 1 Made in Italy No Iron shirt...New shirt that will be a gift
for one of the Grandsons, 5 Notepads, and 4 scarves... all in great condition or new and some with very high end names....Love a good sale !!
--I am in a crafty mood and I am making Christmas Ornaments for a few Christmas gifts....they needed Styrofoam Balls and found them at $ for $1.25...lol
These ornaments use RE-Purposed sweaters and fancy beads and ribbons....all of which I have...these are selling for around $10.. plus at the fancy stores.
--will take snack and tea to volunteer this afternoon
---may have shared this one before I have cut my morning coffees down to 2 from 3 a about a month ago and I have kept it up, so saving 1/3 rd of my coffee use.
That is all for now

Well we didn't do so good on groceries this week, but I guess it is the week before Thanksgiving and DH bought some baking supplies, although he also spent $11.00 on crappy cookies and candy bars!
On the positive side, I earned another $5.00 doing Bing searches and I also got an award from work. It's one of those deals where you can pick a gift from a website. There were a couple of items I considered, but I am not entirely confident that they will not end up as stuff in my basement, so I'm going to go for the $75.00 visa gift card.
We had an amazing dinner at home last night, a salmon, spinach, & pasta dish with parsley, lemon & cream sauce - yum! We watched a movie from the library afterward, so it was an excellent frugal Saturday night for us.
We're having Thanksgiving dinner at my sister's house, which will certainly be more frugal than our restaurant dinners the past two years.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts. Nov 9th was not only the day after our election, but would have been my mom's 98th birthday. It was rough. OTOH, I didn't eat anything all day, so I guess it was sort of frugal...but I wouldn't recommended it as a good way to lose weight or save money!:~) I am really watching out that I don't get derailed over the holidays, which I totally love. I've already signed DD and I up for a tea at a Cincinnati museum (which I have justified as a donation to a cause I care about, and part of DD's Christmas gift....), and worse will follow, if I'm not vigilant! Our celebrations when I was a kid were quite muted - several nice gifts, no stockings, a small tree, no other decorations. We had to wait to open our presents until Grandma and Grandad got the barn chores all done and came up the lane. If there was a lot of snow, they would get out the tractor. If it was nice, they would WALK. It took FOREVER - of course we were glued to the windows watching. As a consequence, I prefer a blow-out Christmas most years, not so much in gifts, now that the kids are old - but holiday events, a big tree, special foods.... The tree is budgeted for. The groceries should not be too much extra, since I shop at Aldi and I've been stockpiling. We will see. I ordered some things on Amazon this morning using my points and getting free shipping, so - work pants, Moleskine pocket calendars for DD and myself (with Snoopy as the WWI flying ace!) and 2# of Highlander Grogg coffee - all free. I do love credit card points.

danna, when you get your ornaments done, can you post a picture?

rosa, the salmon and pasta sounds great. I have a bit of salmon in the freezer, not enough to just have grilled salmon for a meal - which is our favorite way to eat salmon! Maybe I can use pasta and a nice sauce and have enough for all of us - thanks for the idea!!

11-21-16, 7:53pm
This might be more of an un-frugal, but I feel really good about what I spent/bought, so not so bad overall. I went to the first Winter Market of the season yesterday with my sister and a couple of friends. I spent about $55, but this was money I had saved from my allowance for the event. I came home with: a 6-pack of locally crafted root beer for DH, a loaf of bread, linzer torte cookies, & a large pretzel from the Swiss baker, baklava, fancy assorted olives, 2 samosa-like things and 2 savory flatbread things from the Middle Eastern food vendor (sorry that I don't know the names, but the stuff was all great), and 1.5 lbs of short-ribs from a local farm (haven't had short-ribs for years!) So it was entertainment to a certain extent, but we got some really wonderful things to eat including a future short-rib dinner in the freezer!
As far as more mundane groceries go, black olives are on sale for .99 per can this week at Market Basket, so I'm going to really stock up since I eat them in my salad every day, they are usually 1.50 per can, they won't go bad, and they're seldom on sale for such a low price.

Now that I don't have kids and worry about EVERY penny, just most of them, I do like to go out to eat or have a beer. I haven't done that once this month and have seen a big difference in my cash flow. That makes me sad in a way. I'd like to think I could afford it. :(

nothing! frugal about November for this girl. I enjoyed a vacation at the Houston International Quilt Festival. Lots of classes, restaurant meals, local tours and a great relaxing time with my sister and my niece. Hotel did include daily breakfast and evening cocktails/snacks so that in fact was a great value for the price.

DH and I went to Farmer's Market Saturday. We bought some local items for Christmas gift, bought our potatoes and broccoli from the local farmer, ordered Thanksgiving pies from our local organic farm and met the baker (not frugal but oh so fabulous to buy local!)

This Saturday is national BUY LOCAL DAY!!!! Check it out: http://www.independentwestand.org/

The great news? i pulled $ from savings Dec 26 to pay cash for my new car. Over the course of 10.5 months we have saved that back and restored savings. I guess I'm feeling thrifty afterall:cool:

My November frugal was deciding this morning not to go to a Black Wed. sale. I "might" use the things on sale but they would sit around until that time in the future. Plus it was dark, rainy, and it ended up there were loads of accidents. Stayed home and sewed in a warm and dry house. No regrets.

I am blessed to have the experience. I won't do it again like many I met who go every year. That's a ton of $.

Don't know where you live but if you can swing it go for a 2 night stay and take the Saturday Sampler class-30 teachers to choose from. 15" segments and 2hours to take it in. A great exposure to technique!

I'm in the PNW, but don't travel much. I took a color class from Michael James once; I'm not fond of classes that require sewing. I also went to Ravensdale, the polymer clay conference, a couple of times, which was local. It's energizing to be in the company of working artists.

NOT So frugal this weekend....bought several items on the sales (things I have bee putting off but, wanted/needed)
Wanted a lap top computer the frugal was that it comes with Office (with 5 users) which I also wanted/needed so I
won't need to buy that.
Needed a new Bra, like others I hate to spend the money but, the cheaper ones don't do the job and don't last. 50% off
Needed cushioned slippers (the laminate floors I put in last year are very hard on my feet) 50% off.
Wanted/needed Christmas gift for Dgrandson...that he has really wanted 40% off
Wanted 4 Shirts online Sale 50% sale price with tax came to $50.00 and I paid with a $50.00 gift card I had bought for $40.00
And, alot of craft supplies and baggies full of old jewellery too many to list for a few $ at two Christmas Braazers...you have to love the White Elephant Tables...lol
The Jewellery had several pieces that are good for gifts or to use myself, lots of it will be donated to the Seniors Home
I volunteer at. The little gift shop sells them for a really good price and the senior ladies still love to shop and the
money all goes back to them in the form of activities the Auxiliary pays for. Some of the jewellery will end up being used in craft projects.
--Started wrapping Christmas gifts and realize that I have almost everything I need...yeah.
That is all for now.

It sounds like you got some good deals, Danna!
I spent Black Friday getting a haircut, helping my sister plan out a budget, putting in the storm door panels (swapping out the screens), and potting amaryllis bulbs. We had the traditional leftover dinner, and it was really good!
I did make a couple of online purchases this morning. We're going to a Christmas Eve family gathering, and there's a $25. Yankee Swap. I kind of hate those, because we generally come home with $50 in crap to donate to the Salvation Army. I briefly considered not participating, but I don't want to be a spoilsport. One of my purchases was a grab gift from Mexicali Blues, since they are doing a site-wide 25% off sale and have some pretty cool stuff. (Of course one person's cool stuff is another person's crap to be donated. Donations must spike every year right after Christmas). The other was a boot tray for gardening shoes by the back door. This is something I've wanted for awhile, and I got it from Ballard Designs at 15% off and free shipping. I don't mind taking advantage of some of the online deals if it's for something I was planning to buy or needed anyway.

Well, despite my annual Black Friday boycott, I DID make a purchase. Patagonia donated 100% of Black Friday sales to grassroots environmental groups, so I couldn't resist. I asked my DIL if GS needed any outdoor wear and she helped me pick out a nice winter jacket.

Patagonia is pricey, but a) I believe in quality over quantity and b) I LOVE the mission of this store.

So call it a environmentally-frugal purchase.

rosarugosa

Wow Catherine, if they donated 100%, that's almost more of a charitable contribution than a purchase! :)

100% of sales or profits?

100% of sales or profits?

According to the website, 100% of sales generated on their website and in Patagonia stores, but not in partner stores.

Isn't that insane?? Part of their reason reflects exactly how I feel about having to ramp up grassroots environmental activism to counterbalance the backsliding that's bound to happen over the next 4 years.

Two library frugals:
We got a mailing for Consumer Reports and something flickered in my memory. I logged into my public library account and voila - free access to Consumer Reports online!
I read a copy of Down East Magazine and there was a review of a book that sounded good. Back to the library account, request submitted and copies available, so I should be able to pick it up next week.
Two food frugals:
Groceries came in well within budget.
DH made a wonderful meal for us tonight of baked scrod and carnival squash - simple perfection! The squash had already done service as one of my autumn decorations.
One weird miscellaneous frugal:
I have a wonderful candle I bought from a local artisan last year. The fragrance is called "Into the Woods." It's in a little jar and the wicked finally burned down to nothing. I've been squeezing unscented tea lights into the center. They still activate the fragrance and have enabled me to keep the candle going for a whole lot longer.

My husband picks up bags of leaves from town for his compost pile. As we pouring them out, we found about 10 geranium plants and 10 begonias that had been tossed away from container plantings. They are all responding to pots, water, and trimming back where had been frost bit. A couple of them are already trying to bloom again.

I think all of my houseplants are "recycled."

Leftover French bread from T-day > French toast for dinner. Hadn't had it for a long time, so it felt like a treat. :)

Pot of turkey carcass soup here as well. Add corn, carrots, whole wheat egg noodles and some green beans from the garden. Voila! lunches for the week

My library sent an email informing me that the Joshua Becker book I put on hold is in. However, the book by Francine Jay (Miss Minimalist) seems to be almost two months overdue! This has happened to me before when reserving a book on minimalism or decluttering/organizing. Do they get lost in someone's clutter?

Found the perfect winter snow coat for my tiny rescue dog at Marshall's for only $10. This brand usually sells for $40.
