What comes out of Utah is usually decidedly Mormon. Get past any notions you have about that and what awaits is a wonderful fusion of timeless classical music and popular genre performed often among the most beautiful places the world has to offer.
The Piano Guys were in my neighborhood last night. They played Piano and cello, solo and as a duo and spoke at a small college in the Amish countryside. There message was not religious although one can't avoid ones own commitment to any deity. There message was one of uplifting each other along the sometimes treacherous, sometimes dangerous path of life.
Jon Schmidt is a wonderful pianist and also the father of a child who tragically lost her life hiking on an Oregon Trail. Jon has apparently chosen to honor his daughter with music....and last night he did well by her.
Steven Sharp Nelson is more than an accomplished cellist. He is a tornado of energy and optimism. He also has a shared interest with Jon to bring classical music and the joy of making music to the youth of today.
Ludwig Von Beethoven is quoted as saying,
"Don't only practice your art, but force your way into its secrets; art deserves that, for it and knowledge can raise man to the Divine."

If Beethoven is right, The Piano Guys are a living reminder that music is for everyone to discover.
I do not usually rub elbows with academic elite, uppitty mucks but last night even as I was dressed in jeans and a ragged old sweater......the music made us one for a brief time. I'd say that at least in this case, what comes out of Utah is decidedly worth seeing.
