Astronaut John Glenn died age 95. Now, why wasn't he the person of the year?

Can you imagine the degree of courage it took for him to take the first trip into space trusting the technology available at the time? i always admired him.

The year he went into outer space or maybe some other year!

I thought that was Yuri Gagarin.

He was one of the penultimate American heroes when I was a boy, then, about 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to spend a day with him and his wife Annie as the head of their security detail when they came to visit my city. I was surprised to see up close just how down-to-earth and gracious they were both were. That short time with them gave me an entirely different level of respect. He will be missed.

Here's a digital copy of the framed picture which still resides in my office.

Same question.
He was in space, multiple times. The year of his first trip, the pope that moderated the Cuban Missle crisis took the man of the year. (man in space and not the first, verses man making himself extinct via nuclear war)

Edit to add, twice, not multiple times. I thought he was supposed to be in one of the scrubbed Apollo missions, that was scheduled before we lost three astronauts to a fire. He left the program, before that.
