View Full Version : Oh, The Hermit In Me...
followed me to New Mexico, where I have been not-so-secretly gloating about not having to shovel out from under the big snowstorm back in Michigan! I have been enjoying the 40 to 50+ degree sunny weather this week, yet I still find my inner hermit wanting to stay home at night, even when I've been home all day running the gallery. I just want to be cozy when it gets dark! But that means my entire life the last few days has revolved around being in a tiny building with tiny living quarters! I always make sure I go and take a walk in the morning before I open up for the day, but come 5:00, it is cold and dark. I can only go up to the tavern for a beer and some company every few days because I don't feel like hanging out in a bar THAT much!
The other day I had sort of made mental plans to go up to Santa Fe tonight for a blues jam; I haven't been able to go since October and I have tomorrow off. But it is so cozy here I think I am going to have a hard time convincing myself to get dressed up a little and drive 30 miles in the dark. I know it will be fun once I get there; as usual, just getting there is the battle. I think I will take a little tiny nap right now and think about it in a little bit....

dress up a little, drive to Santa Fe. but go in the daytime and find something to do. Get home before dark.
Im going to worry about you driving those mountain roads in the dark.
There's nothing wrong with staying home either. You only have yourself to make happy, so who cares if you stay home?
I tend to stay home, and see how I would like to have more to do. But I also really am looking forward to a snow storm so I can stay home!
Thing is, I am home 24/7 now, living and working in the same building in a tiny, tiny rural town. And it's fine, I like it, ....BUT I do think I need to get out tot he big city for a little night life for once! I've pepped up a bit since my original post and I am ready to rock 'n roll. I promise I'll be VERY careful driving too. I am only allowing myself one beer.
Sounds good, I spent years at home with kids. I think that working from home would make it even more important to get out.
I actually started looking at some local classes on the weekends. I realize that some of my friend issues are my own issues. I also spent so many years so broke that I didn't have a lot of choice. So now I have a little bit more I can get out. I want to take a cooking class or art.
Let us know how it goes!

If it's a problem for you, it's a problem I guess, but I think some urge to not do much in the darkest coldest (cold is relative :)) time of the year is natural.
But I really couldn't do the working at home thing, no I have no love of commutes, but I really do need to go get out of the home, so the ideal for me is really a short commute to an workplace outside the home.
And just think of the NO snow, yes we got it in Lower Michigan this week.

I like to stay at home when I WANT to stay home and not when snow, wind and drifted country roads prohibited me from leaving home. As there is nothing I can do about the weather, I need to change my attitude.

I'm a hermit this time of year and I get restless in the mid afternoon til bedtime. I would probably feel better if I got out more

Thanks for checking in. I was thinking about you the other day and wondering how you were transitioning from fall to winter in NM. I'm usually in my pjs by 6:30 in the evening these days. I don't want to get out either.

It is nice to hear others are feeling the same way! The weather here is horrific, with blowing whiteout conditions and frigid temps. This is January weather a month early. 6:30 sounds wonderful. Even the dog does not want to go out for a walk.
It is cold but the sun is shining today. Sunshine makes it all bearable.
Walking the dog keeps me out and active but I am warmly and properly dressed for the present conditions.
I know that winter is only going to last 2 more months with some meltdowns due to higher temps to come as well. I will hibernate and get some painting of pictures done as well as the reading in which I have fallen way behind.
Started some soil sprouting which is a refreshing change and keeps things growing.
It's 58 degrees and sunny right now. Too bad I came down with some virus yesterday that has me exhausted with stuffy sinuses, a slight fever and sore throat. At least I can still run the gallery while feeling under the weather, unlike trying to do the Wholefoods job while feeling sick-ish.

I'm curious to know, SiouzQ... I think you've been in NM for 6 months now? What's the bottom line? How do you feel about the move? What are the plusses? What are the negatives? What do you still have to get used to? At this point (knowing you may change your mind over the next few months).. would you do it again?
Just the market researcher in me looking for data ;)
We are in a new environment too. For most of our life, snow and winter was a rare thing other than some 40 degree temps. Now, in Colorado we are getting used to weekly snow and temps approaching zero at night. Totally new for us. It seems to me that much like the natural world shows us, winter is a time for hibernation and rest. Going out on a snowy night in the dark just does not appeal though after a day or two, cabin fever definitely sets in.

We are hoping to be able to get out safely today, with the roads a bit clearer. I have a major case of cabin fever. I cant walk outside due to respiratory issues.
