I don't get summer off, even though I am in education. And actually most of the traditional times for school people to be off we work harder with our camps. But I really want to take a month off, sigh, I even found some places with month-long retreats or jobs being a manager at a retreat center. I do like my job, and I am good at it, and I get paid well now. However there is a reason that educators get these breaks. I know teachers that work at tutoring all summer but others who travel and get experiences that they bring back to the classroom and their teaching. I am actually serious enough to ask about a leave, they are saying I may not have money for my summer camp anyway and I don't want to float and help at other camps for months.

Can you survive without the income?

Not quite, I have vacation time and a ton of sick time which I don't think counts. So I need to talk to people about if there is even a leave policy that would let me take time off. And then if it won't work this summer think ahead about how many vacation and personal hours I can save up, part of my week vacation this summer is going to be flex time since I KNOW that I will put in extra hours before and after the trip. It may be a longer process to make this happen one summer, but easier than taking a long time in the middle of the year since I run winter break programs.
