View Full Version : Great time for an attack?
Does anyone else have concerns over this being a perfect time for some kind of foreign attack, being that our government isn't very organized at this point in time? (among other things).
What's with the Russian "Spy" ship only 12 miles from our coast? What's it doing so far from home?? And why are international waters so close to our coast?
To borrow from Marvin Gaye......What's goin' on?

No.
I think the attack has already happened. Yesterday Facebook recommended a post to me that was wirtten entirely in Chinese with a picture of Justin Timberlake. Clearly this is because we've already lost the war with them. I'm going to sign up for CSL classes next week because the Facebook translation made absolutely no sense. But at least I had Justin Timberlake to look at, so at least there was that.

Spying, and probably trying to intercept government traffic, like both countries do with satellites, etc.
Can't believe the last question. What is supposed to be between sovereign waters and international waters and how do you stop the oceans from flowing?>8)
Time to think logically, Cathy.
Why would anyone attack the US especially Russia?
Who wants to deal with the results? What can anyone hope to gain?
It would be such a pain the a$$ that no one would want to try to cope with such a diverse cast of characters. As far as individual problems occurring, the US has been dealing with such things for years and doing quite well.
Now I know that is the outsider's view but you are concerned about outsiders attacking.
Time to turn off the TV and enjoy the wonderful anticipation of spring with all that it offers.
The terrorists who came from Saudi Arabia, I think, wanted to attract attention to the mid East and the power struggle going on there.

Haha.
I don't find Justin Timberlake cute, though.
Ask yourself the question: Is there anything I can reasonably do about it? Answer: No.
It may be that you need a diet off media for awhile. Find those things around that you can address, fix, help, etc. and work on them.

I understand Cathy's concern. Even the security "counsel" is not yet in place. .... not good
TMS........Is 12 miles what every country has? No need to be rude.
I don't think we are in any immediate danger of an attack and all the Russian military activity right now is just bluster and posturing. I am worried more about our national security but perceive any risk to be more like a cyber attack, a trade war, or general global or economic instability.
Thanks Rogar. After watching Trump's press conference, I'm more concerned than ever with his increasing psychosis. Yes, I really believe he's got a mental disorder. I just can't believe where we're at right now. I understand that some people wanted change, but this is extremely disconcerting.
I'd be much more concerned with the attacks Congress has planned - like on the ACA, EPA, etc.

Agreed. There's so much to be concerned about!
As to you others who advise me to stop listening to the news, and appreciate other things.........I do appreciate lots of other things. But I don't want to stop listening to the news. It informs me of Trump's attacks on many things that are very important to me and he wants to destroy them.

Not sure how utter disbelief at naivety is rude? Or laws of nature/physics!
No, twelve miles is not every country, as that is part of the dispute with North Korea (other countries share territorial waters/not all ocean, etc). It is due to Maritime law and treaties/things like United Nations law of the sea).

I'm not sure it's naivete' I have. Hey......you're the one who said that oceans flow where they want. Isn't 12 miles, 12 miles, regardless of where the water is flowing? :~)

Pour a glass of water, into another glass of water and see if you can separate them.>8)
Not sure what your even saying here?
So you're saying that people sailing in international waters have no way of knowing if they are within someone else's space because the water can pull them into another nation's space and they can't know that they're doing that? Is that what you're saying?

Chicken Licken, maybe?
Ishbel, not sure what you are saying. Are you saying the Russians might be playing a game of chicken by coming so close? Or are you saying my concerns are like running around crying "the sky is falling"?

The environment is a mostly different bailiwick than national security, but my top concern. I suspect after Pruitt is confirmed there will be all sorts of executive action horrors unleashed. There are also rumors that Congress is planning a repeal and replace for the endangered species act. Political regimes and economic issues will come and go but environmental damage may be for generations.

The latter.
The latter.
That's a pretty curious thing for someone to say who doesn't even live here. Hey.....you can have Trump et. al., all then we'll see how you feel.

You think we who live outwith the USA aren't concerned about Mr Trump? You need tomread more world news.
I know he will affect many other countries in some way. I do watch a lot of news. But I don't appreciate your saying my concerns are unreasonable and like I'm running around screaming "The sky is falling". What's up with that, besides your not liking me because you think I'm a racist?
I don't know what the point is, really, but that is way down my list of concerns these days. So much more to be aghast over.
Maybe it's just Putin, on his way to Mar a Lago....
Worrying about an actual attack from another country is not top on my list of worries. I just kind of put that question out there considering the incident with the Russian ship. There's far more immediate issues to worry about.

I neither like nor dislike you. I do not know you.
My views on your racist tendencies are driven by reading what you write.
Cathy, no one is dismissing your right to feel concern about issues that are important to you. What does concern me is the level of stress that you are experiencing and projecting in your posts. It is not sustainable for your longterm health. I care about that.
FWIW, when I feel deep concern about an issue of whatever nature, I try to find an action plan to relieve some of the stress. I look at all the options available and choose what I can do.
OK, so what can Cathy do?
1.Take care of yourself first and foremost. No lifeguard ever puts his/her wellbeing ahead of a drowning victim. Otherwise there are two victims! 2,You are needed within your family to be all the wonderful support that they are used to. No one else can do that. Don't sacrifice them.
3.Write, call etc., to those who have some influence in government, those organizations who may need public voices, etc.
These actions will help.
That is a short list of to-do's. Others may have some more.
I've been sending emails to my reps on a regular basis, contributing money where I think it will do good, signing petitions in some instances, laughing with friends about the increasingly frantic machinations of our Dear Leader (to keep from crying), and generally rolling with the punches. I still have moments of despair and hopelessness, but I don't let it overwhelm me. I agree that taking action is the best anodyne.
Thanks for your suggestions Razz and Jane. I still do things that I care about. I'm having health issues and am having a fair amount of pain.....which is never good for one's emotional state.
I do feel fairly helpless about what Trump is doing. He's so pro growth and development and that's the last thing I need where I live. It's already coming too close to the type of lifestyle I need to have.
DH and I talk about things a lot and he feels the same.......as do my family members and a few friends.
I suppose we're all hit hard if we didn't want Trump, but a lot of it depends on what we feel he might "ruin" for our personal lives, and our children's lives. It's not like other presidents that won that I didn't vote for. I truly believe that Trump has a psychosis. I want to believe that enough people will stop him, but so far, it doesn't seem that way yet. I know there's still time, though.
I do appreciate your suggestions about how to have a little more perspective and not drown in my angst.

Cathy, it is painful to watch Trump on TV. Yesterday was truly bizarre! I am following Jane's method of coping and I did have to quit watching the news for a few days because it was really stressing me out. There is a nationwide group popping up all over for social justice, equal rights, etc. It is called Indivisible and I did sign up to go to there next meeting to see what I can do to help.
This may be the best thing that's happened to meaningful activism--maybe it took this horror to wake people up. Grab your "Nevertheless, she persisted" tee and hit the streets! :help:

Don't have a clue where you are getting that from!!!
You might look into how ships navigate, if you believe that.
You asked, WHY international waters are so close to the USA. Invisible lines that are agreed upon, in the same way your town has a boundry, or your state has a border, etc. Less then 12 miles is considered territorial waters, and I have no way of knowing if your freaking out trying to figure out why there isn't some magical force field that separates territorial waters, from international waters (glass of water example).

In your angst, it appears you are not critically thinking and are reacting in the same way as Chicken Little.
Isn't non critical thinking the essence of being unreasonable????
I think this would be a VERY bad time for anyone to attack us in a conventional manner given that Trump thinks that nukes are just another weapon so why not use them. It would be suicide. Now cyber attacks? Who knows.
