As I was sitting working on my computer, there suddenly appeared a bullet shaped message on the top right corner of my MacBook stating "you can talk to me about anything, talk to me". I clicked the 'x' to close it. This is something new to me.
Any ideas what this is all about and how to manage things?

Sounds to me like an app that is a messenger service was alerting you to a new message. And that message sounds spammy.

Do you have Flash installed? Flash and Javascript, will allow popups/mini browser windows like that. People normally do that kinds of stuff (typically porn related) trying to get people to connect and thereby basically allowing bad guys access to your computer.
Otherwise, yes, could be some instant messenger service, where they sent out spam, hoping someone would connect. (or your mom, worried about you, LOL)

I have Flash installed and have for some time. This is new for me. How do I check for instant messenger and delete it?

Flash is not a particularly safe add on. Adobe is constantly having to do updates to fix the latest flaw that can allow bad guys to do stuff. You should have it set to request access each time it tries to run. That way if you're doing something legit, such as trying to watch a video on a news site, you click Allow, otherwise you can click don't allow and prevent stuff like this from potentially compromising your computer.
