Anyone else whose dog is a major shedder? I can sweep the place but three days later there are fist-sized hairballs all over again.
How is this caninely possible?!:help:

get a brush called the Furminator, less than $30. It cuts the undercoat as you brush, tons of hair comes off. I highly recommend it

It does not stop the shedding it just preemptively forces him to shed into this device?

Genetics. Dogs fur needs to thicken up in winter for warmth, and shed in the hotter months for cooling. Similar to why we tend to fatten up and sleep more in winter then summer.

So a relatively recent invention, magically overrides thousands of years of mutation/evolution?

I love the furminator. I use it on our dog all the time. It helps get out the almost-ready-to-shed fur, before it ends up in your house. It's great!

There are breeds of dogs that don't shed much, but I doubt you would trade in Harlan. ;)

Oh, I would never get rid of Harlan. In many senses, he is all I've really got.

Though I would like to deal with this fur situation. So perhaps I will get that device Harlan, as a minimalist dog, is allowed to have 10 things. He currently has 7.

This is an amazing dog brush too. Works great on our black lab. It must feel like a massage because he seems to enjoy it!

Oh, I would never expect you to get rid of Harlan just because of his fur problem. Our pets put up with a lot from us too! I wouldn't trade our Suzi for the world either!

He should,have a chew bone.
, and maybe a ball if he likes ball sports.

This is a fun idea for a new thread.

My golden retriever hates balls, could care less. Yet she is birdy--the other day, she walked over and picked up a robin that was just sitting there. We felt so bad.
She also caught two chipmunks. She is the oddest dog.. .

Furminator I double that suggestion. I say every hair outside is one that is not inside! Or another, No outfit is complete without dog hair. I thought I had seen all the hair once could imagine with my beasts, then along came my Jack Russell Terrorist Miss Lily Beans. Oh who wants to wear black anyhow!

WE have the mitt and another metal device for getting the hair out. 3 years ago we inherited our son's 80 lb husky/shepherd mix and while he has always shedded this year is by far the worst. Each day we remove enough hair that fills a walmart plastic bag and still within hours we see his hair floating around. WE had a long, cold winter for us and a hot early summer so I think that is having something to do with it. He is almost 12 and still walks 3 miles/day and is an awesome dog. I am guessing this is his last summer so are taking him swimming daily and then a walk and giving him more beef sticks then we usually do. I will really miss him when he goes but no more shedding dogs for me. My Maltese do not shed which is lovely.

If the furminator is too expensive, they have shedding blades for around $10. They don't work as well and my dog hates it. But it removes hair well

Try one of these--https://www.sleekez.com/products/5-sleekez-dog-grooming-shedding-stick-1 I'm using one on my horse and it's amazing. For years I always used the metal shedding blade but this is much easier to use.

My dog is just the opposite, as she hardly sheds at all. I only got her last year (tiny elderly chihuahua mix) and she's been fed a raw diet from the day I got her (first frozen, now The Honest Kitchen dehydrated). Her coat is thick and gorgeous but she should have been losing more than a few hairs here and there. They say that raw/species appropriate diet helps with excess shedding, so maybe there is something to that.

As the owner of three Corgis, the most prolific shedders in the dog world, I would be so happy if I only had to vacuum every three days. Here's is how we handle it : we taken them into the groomer every 6 weeks and have the undercoat taken out. In between the groomers, they get brushed with a Furminator every other day. . Except during the really heavy shedding times, then it is once a day. This doesn't take long, if kept on top of it. I can get through all three of them in 20 minutes or less. except on Tuesday, ( Toesday  ) That is when I Dremel their nails. when I used to only have one Corgi, Toesday was for nails and Fursday (Thursday) was for brushing
Also, investing in a good vacuum. I have two Dysons ( an upright and a canister )and they are used and abused on a regular basis.
