View Full Version : three simple things a day

I liked the bookending thread for the weekend! In the same spirit, I wanted to start a thread where we could post three things we wanted to "get to" each day and then a place to bookend whether we did them. I want to make my things simple and achievable, but the kind of things I am not getting to because of work, etc.
So for today, here are my 3 things:
practice violin 30 minutes
pick up violin and cello from repair
knit on granddaughter's mitten for 30 minutes

Ok, three things beyond my regular schedule for today:
bake (done but I want credit)
Make 5 clay texture pieces (part of my class homework for the week)
move the pine cupboard

Well, that didn’t happen.

Well, that didn’t happen.
Aw, you did get one, though!

I managed to get all three in and it feels great. Tomorrow I will try to

practice violin for half hour
start learning "Music of the Night" on the cello
get to the thumb portion of the mitten

Maybe i’ll Just post if I manage three extra things tomorrow - any three.

tomorrow is pretty full.

I didn't post a list, as I knew better with one project I needed to do today. I went down to the garage, just so I would have a spare pair of hands in case of trouble, and ended up being the spare pair of hands and working there, today. They were behind and have one on vacation, and one injured, and I ended up being the spare hands that was able to speed up things, be second hands/runner, etc. Started on my project then, around 3:15 or so and was done a little after 5pm.
Replacing a rusted shackle on a leave spring, isn't an easy job. Half goes quick, and the other half your fighting it tooth and nail. (almost broke a toe, when a tool fell off the rack onto my foot)
I expect I will be limping like my bosses tomorrow.
I will be able to do what I need to get caught up Saturday, but won't be able to do the fun errand, until next week.

So, Sunday’s are “unscheduled” by which I mean scheduled one at a time.

the kids who live in town are coming over tonight for dinner to celebrate dh’s Birthday (was Friday) so after 4:30 it’s all family time.

three things I need to do before they arrive:
clean bathroom
vacuum
make pie

three things I really want to do today:
Rebed chicken coop
move pullets
start my pottery homework

You guys are putting down "have to things," and that is great. But I was going to put down things in CL's second category--things I really want to do but never get to because of work and chores.

For today, I plan to
practice cello and violin for 45 minutes
work on my new computer for 45 minutes
get to the thumb on the mitten--that did not get accomplished, as by the time I go to bed and have time to knit, my eyes are too tired to see!

Tybee, I realized what you were doing.

the first three items I have been putting off because they were not critical. If I don’t do them before the kids come, there will once again be no pressure and I will go back to putting them off.

i cleaned the bathroom - that was most important- and am on water break from working on rebedding the coop.

Good for you! I am thinking maybe I should add one thing to the list so it is one and three-- one item I have been putting off and three pleasurable ones I have not been getting to-- okay so for today, my put off thing/unpleasant is going through and moving my laptop into a new bag because the old one got ruined with coffee stains. Unless I can figure out a way to get the coffee stains out. Hmm.

I finished rebedding the coop and moved the pullets. They seem pretty happy.

now I need a shower and then I can make pie and vacuum while it is cooking.

So, I succeeded at pie and vacuuming.

technically I have about two hours before bed that I could start my homework, but I will probably just clean up all the dishes and sog. It is too late in the day for me to start something creative.

My creative is making copy cat broccoli cheese soup like Panera. Super yum. But I did make a hat for grandbaby this weekend and am working on a matching little sweater. I have other things I should be doing, and I am not doing them.

Yesterday I practiced violin and cello. I made zero progress on mitten, but I did the bag switch.

Today I will

play on new computer half hour
knit earlier in day for half an hour when I can still see
work on Pachelbel canon and learn 5 more measures (am going super slowly!)

Throw pots for an hour
sort out Halloween decorations
make clay hippos this evening

I am simplifying my life by:

1. Now that the temperatures are colder smelling my clothes before I put them in the hamper to make sure they really need to be washed.
2. When daylight savings time arrives and I can see better in the morning I will explore a shortcut to work that a coworker told me about.
3. Reducing outdoor chores without a corresponding jump in indoor chores so that I have time to just relax and enjoy being rather than doing. It's the closest I can get to hibernation.

Well, I did not throw pots at all, unless you count throwing a wet chuck for trimming - that did at least involve centering.

but I spent almost an hour in the studio and I finished the pieces I started in class last week - “finished” is a relative word, I doubt I will fire any of them, but I am learning a new skill.

halloween decorations are spread out all over the place - the SAD is bad today and deciding is too hard.

hippos look doubtful.

I did not do ANYTHING on my list.
Today woke up to find everything covered in snow.
This is NOT my favorite time of year. Wish I could just go back to bed.

Okay, I have three for today:

Grade four essays
Spend two hours on electronic gradebook
Walk and stretch

Only the walking is really a pleasurable thing, but I'm a stage in my semester (I'm a teacher!) where I'm feeling totally overwhelmed and panicked about grading, so just giving myself some concrete goals for moving steadily forward on a busy day helps allay the panic a bit.

I let work pile up on my desk rather than try to get it all in before the daily close. People keep interrupting me and I am not allowed to put my phone on do not disturb.

Also put off getting gas until the morning.

Yesterday I bought more bras so I won't have to laundry so often/do partial loads.

I am so ready for the Thanksgiving break.

Okay, so I TOTALLY overestimated what I would be up to getting done tonight.

Grade four essays - I DID THREE
Spend two hours on electronic gradebook - TOO TIRED, BUT I DID ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES
Walk and stretch - DIDN'T DO IT

The 20 minutes on the gradebook was enough time to input two sets of quiz grades, so I'm glad I pushed myself to do that much.

I'll try another three tomorrow!

Good work EJ, just tackling the gradebook is a success!

Put away laundry

This thread is super timely for me. Mostly I don't have a lot of stuff I want to do at home. I work hard, as does SO, and I figure it's a good week when I can just get the laundry done.

But next week is thanksgiving and I've taken the week off from work. While it's tempting to just sit and read library books I'm now inspired to plan some goals. My three goals:

1. figure out how to make and use a remote desktop on my computer. I looked into and read an article about this a year ago and haven't gotten past the initial steps. If I succeed in this goal I will be able to do my banking on a remote desktop by the end of the week.

2. Make a big pan of lasagna and freeze it in individual pieces. I hate spending money buying lunch at work and need to get back in the habit of having food I can just grab and go. I'm sure I can do this. I just need to spend the time to make it happen.

3. My last doc exam basically said that I need to be getting more exercise to slow/stop the progression of an assortment of common health issues that affect people as they get into their 50's and older. Goal for the coming week that I'm home is to climb the nearby massive outdoor staircase at least 4 times each day with the plan of continuing to do this when I go back to work the week after thanksgiving.
