My company just rolled out a new program, which includes an award level for the good work employees do every day, not just above and beyond. Awards are in points which can be redeemed for crap - um I mean valuable items. Points can be used immediately for smaller items or saved up for bigger ticket items.
I got one of these "pat on the back" awards yesterday, and I was absolutely fascinated by the array of items available. At my point level I can choose from such diverse items as a Batman keychain, a pair of socks, a cheese melter (don't ask me), black shoe polish, a cow butter dish, a SALAD SPINNER! So I got some great amusement value out of the whole thing. I think I'll save my points because there are gift cards available at the next level.
I think if I was designing an award program, I would establish some sort of account for the employees and deposit dollars. I know there is supposed to be research demonstrating that gifts are more meaningful than cash in an award program, but a Batman keychain? :~)

Oh boy, I think I might reconsider that retirement plan. But get the Batman keychain first! Something to remember them by.

Salad spinner or batman keychain, such a difficult decision! But I kinda like the cheesy stuff, what would be great is anything that decorates your desk space.
