View Full Version : Who was the lady dealing with a brain tumor?
I can't remember her name. I was thinking about her the other day. I don't think she posts here now, but maybe she does.
Just curious how she is doing.
Anyone remember her name?
WJSimon? I thought someone had posted here that she had died.
I fear you are right herbgeek. It looks like her last post was in 2011. Gosh, that was a long time ago. Her last post sounded upbeat and she said her chemo was going well this time. Hmmm
I think there was another woman on here who died. I can't remember her name either. She had a bad time living with her fairly lazy husband and son and finally moved out and things were looking up for her, but then she got ill and died. Can anyone remember her name?
Now I'm sad.

SHe did die. At one time I knew her real name, but have since forgotten it.
Yes.....HoosierNan. Oh man. Life can be beautiful, then sad.

I always wondered what happened to her daughter. I believe she had asked friends to be guardians. I hope things turned out ok for her. I believe she would be high school or college age now.
It is amazing to me how time and years fly by. I just realized that when Lhamo talked about WJSimon's daughter being college age, I have been on this simple living website under the different incarnations for almost 15 years. Others, here, have been longer. How long have you been part of this?

I have been coming to these forums for 18 years. Changed my name when the old forums shut down but not my simple living attitude.

Since 1999 I think, when I read YMOYL while on vacation, oddly enough on this very island, and decided after reading it to just stay here.
I was on a simplicity/frugality mailing list back in the early/mid 90s (Maxlife) and a number of us migrated to the original incarnation when that fizzled out. I'm the only one of that group left. So likely not that much after Bae.
My bio thing here says 2011, but that can't be right. I've been here for at least 50 years.
I joined here many years ago on the old forum. My name was nancynj back then I think. This was way back when I used WebTV instead of my laptop.
I joined the old forums in 2001. Either right before or right after 9/11. Same name all this time.

That's when the switch to this forum happened. No one has a date older than late 2010.
Oh yeah......I forgot about that. Thanks for jarring my memory (what there is of it!)

I have always been more of a reader/lurker than an active poster but I was on the old forum too, can't remember what year I joined though. I think my old name was doglover.
Btw, I just feel like saying that my years-long drawn-out horrible divorce including custody battle is final as of today and I am SO happy!

congrats, mamalatte! I wish you all the best going forward. I've been around this board for a long time, often just reading. I don't remember when I joined the old board either - I was ganderswamp then. I know it was before Sylvan was banned - he was my first experience with having someone banned and I was greatly saddened. I miss Mattise also - another ban. Bae wasn't on it then (if that's a useful measure of time, lol...), but I don't know if he hadn't yet arrived, or was just on one of his - ah - hiatuses.
My profile says 2011, but I came over from the other boards, so some time longer....
I have never been a big poster, but read most everything. Lots to learn here!

I've been here since early '00s. I think I was probably just learning how to google when I googled YMOYL after reading it, and found Dave's site. I loved it--I loved his newsletter and his booklist. And of course, I loved the discussion with everybody--I remember you guys (and thanks for reminding me of previous user names) and I remember enjoying Chickadee, Spartana and Gary's banter (what was Spartana's original name?), and Billy Barebutt, Christine, Mrs. Mizerly and so many others.
Chickadee, Pansy and I met IRL and that seemed such a daring adventure then. Funny how life and time changes one's perspective. Thanks for the reminder about Dave's booklist. I did buy some of them but downsized in my last move.

I am a relative newcomer, who only became interested in frugality and simple living in late 2007/early 2008. One of my favorite quips at the time was that I stopped shopping and the economy tanked. :) It was just before the recession began, so the recession was not what changed my mindset, but it certainly reinforced my "new" ideas.
I forget how I found the (old) forum, but I was really head over heels, and when the forum was transitioning/shutting down, I was truly panicked about the loss of my new community. So thankful we came out on the other side. :)
ETA: I did not know her then, but my understanding is that Spartana was once She-Ra.
yes, spartana was she rah. I have been lhamo all along. I think I joined the original SLN forums around 1998 or 1999 -- read YMOYL in late 1997. Was definitely here in 2000, when we were living in NY.

I think I joined in 2003, different name. I only check in periodically now, but this forum was a lifeline for me during major life changes (i.e. how to get my financial life together so I could survive divorce). It was pretty radical to think about frugality and simplicity in the early 2000s but the crash in 2008 got a lot of people on the bandwagon.
I remember also Diana in Wisconsin. I remember when Iris Lilies was Faux Paws, and there was another name before that one.... And when KIB was in Bisbee......she's back, isn't she? I though I had seen her avatar...
This place still gives me a lot of hope. Of course, I totally avoid any conversation about politics, so that helps.
I've been on for about 20 years. Not a frequent poster, used to read more often but got rid of internet at home (and don't have a smart phone) so only rarely log on now (generally when traveling and in a hotel as I am now:-). I met WJSimon for lunch many years back as I was traveling through her part of the state (I too lived in California at the time).
How can we find out how long we've been here, since they date changed awhile back? I don't have a clue.

You can’t because “here” is a web forum that came into being December 2011.
The prior forum(s?) where we gathered were closed down and that data is not available.
I have been chatting and overposting since spring 2001. I remember the date because that is the year my in laws took DH’s entire family to Switzerland and I was sad to have to leave this new found community for a few weeks.
edited to add: I have never understood how to access Wayback data (internet back up) or what data is actually included in the Wayback machine. More than once I would have liked easy access to web pages no longer out there. Wait—one time someone did retrieve something from a goth gardening forum I frequented, it was a brilliant piece of work and formed the core of modern goth gardening. Haha, kind of a niche interest.
I knew that you liked Goth movies etc., but Goth gardening!!!!:0! Is nothing sacred?

IL, I remember you posting about your black/dark garden - was that on the old forum? How did it turn out, do you still have it? I was very intrigued about it.

I have remnants of it. The hard scaping and garden furniture are still there. But I learned that all of the black plants I wanted need strong sunlight to develop their deep color, and this garden is in deep shade. So, it now has ferns and ivy, and during the summer a few red impatiens.
I am sad that I cant grow the dark coral bells, black lacy elderberry, mondo grass that looks likes a big black spider, and fabulous black columbine that would be ideal for this garden.
It is a small area behind our front porch. DH designed and built a great bench with gothic arches on the back. I found this super cool old church remnant at an antique mall (below) and our gargoyle lives in it, placed at the entrance to this little goth garden area:

The gargoyle in its private dwelling is quite unique and fun. After travelling in different parts of Europe and seeing all the varieties of sculpture and seeing this post, I had to finally check the meaning of gargoyles. I have learned something I have often wondered about so thank you for the triggering thought.
From: http://gargoylestore.blogspot.ca/p/symbolism-of-gargoyles.html
Gargoyle statues are a very common symbol in home and garden decor today but do you know what the gargoyle is symbolising when you use it in your design?
Gargoyles were commonly used in medieval times. Their two main purposes were to scare off evil, and to divert rainwater. Many had open mouths and long necks because they functioned as downspouts to divert rainwater from building foundations. The word "Gargoyle" originates from the old French word "Gargouille" meaning "throat" but which also describes the gurgling sound of water as it is coming down the downspout.
Sounds like a good thing to have in the garden. Gargoyles. I have a blue gazing ball to ward off evil and blue glass baubles in windows all around the house....Iris, I love the gothic alcove. In your new property you have lots of sun, right? Maybe a dark garden awaits.

i hadnt heard about the gurgling sound.
My gargoyle is a ground dweller and as such is not happiest there, he would prefer to perch on the top of our house.
But if he's perched on the top of your house, you cannot see him.

I am just saying what he would prefer.
Since I place him where I want him, yep, He is low where we can enjoy his company.
He doesnt much like us.
I don't know when I joined, but it was back when the forum was one long list of threads, no topic headings or anything. I'm back because I'm getting a bit bored with the youngsters over at Mr. Moneymustache.
ETA: I was Paula P TN back then.
