We had the inspection and the appraisal last week. I was afraid I'd have buyer's remorse, seeing our house in the winter, on the lake, unfurnished, brown and glum. But not so! I stood on our broken up concrete dock and watched the winter sun set across the lake, I passed the greenhouse/beef pasture a 10 minute walk away; I passed a business that sells rain barrels and composters (I have mine), we had lunch at the town pizza/brew place, and I'm in love. DH actually started a fire in the fire pit, which I told him was illegal and he could get arrested for trespassing, but that kind of thing never concerns him. So he and DS and I sat and watched day turn to night in this summer community, where we were the only inhabitants that night.
I do plan a few renovations: I want to replace the log siding (shiplap half-log siding) with cedar; I want to add window boxes and eventually a deck. I have ideas for decorating the interior with whimsy and an homage to its 1940s birth. I'm really excited.
And the IRS actually sent me a REFUND for $1400 today!! Life is good.
You're making me jealous, but in a good way. Congratulations!

Catherine, get you some 1940s vintage cast iron skillets for the kitchen. This was today’s chicken pot pie. Imagine a winter evening , a slice of pie, a fire, coffee and maybe a good book. Cheers!

I have the cast iron skillets. Just need the pie and coffee and good book! Sounds like heaven.
You're a good advertisement for trusting your instincts, Catherine.
What a happy post.
Oh, can't wait to hear more!

Not a deck! Make a screened in porch! Can be used as a sleeping porch. Unheated, uncooled, no windows to clean, just screens. Of course, maybe you dont have bugs up there and if so, I guess an unscreened deck would serve the same purpose on nights it does not rain.

That sounds awesome! I would do a screened in porch with windows. Then even when it is cold if it is a sunny day it will heat up.

IL and TT, Screened-in sleeping porch is a great idea.
In the latest news, the inspection report came back fine, but we did ask them for some minor electrical repairs, fix a broken window spring, and clean out some debris in the crawlspace.
They came back and took $1000 off the purchase price! I thought at the MOST they'd offer us $500. I feel guilty for taking it!

I think they have bugs and they are big as well as the black flies. As my husband and brother-in-law once stated while standing where their forefathers lived, "oh, so this is why they left!"
A screened porch is an excellent idea.

:D I've thought that about the North Dakota branch of my family.
