It’s evaluation time!

the time of year when I distill 66 human beings down to one page narratives describing their skills, aptitudes, and recent learning and development in various areas.

i would take a significant pay cut to not have to do this part of my job. I would like to propose that any parent who wants an evaluation of his or her child schedule an hour or so to come talk with me. I won’t expect to be paid for that time. Anyway, five people would come.

66 evaluations. 16 exhausting hours. During which my husband says “I don’t know why you work so hard on those - nobody reads them anyway.”

I never got long or even one page evaluations at any time in my schooling. My parents were happy with set of check marks and one or two sentences. In college, all I got were grades. Job or college references could be that long but were not done for many. Do all the instructors do the same amount of work, are you compensated for the 2 full days of additional work or is time set aside (or are you doing it at home?)

Every kid gets a page for every subject. Classes such as mathematics also get numerical grades and possibly skill check marks. It is assumed we can do four kids an hour. (I’m slow, I type slowly and think carefully) We are expected to do two hours per class without additional pay. Class sizes are small. For each student in a class above 8, we are compensated $10. Many teachers give class assignments the next two weeks (time until due date) that allow them to work on evaluations for at least half the class time while kids work independently. That is extremely difficult in my classes.

i don’t resent the time - I resent the task.

I understand, the systems need what they need however ineffective we find them. I have a little better data measures than your narratives but this type of work is hugely time intensive,

For me I hate snack paperwork, actually trained my assistant in it so for the first time ever I don't have to do 3 hours a month of nit picky snack records. I mean the risk of accidentally serving an extra snack or wasting one because a kid was absent!! Certainly worth 3 hours a month you know. Poor sucker who has to get and process all these records.
