View Full Version : Favourite love songs?
I sing in a community fun choir once a month. For February, the director has asked for some love song ideas for Valentines Day.
What songs would you include in a list of love songs?

I've always loved Billy Joel's I Love You Just The Way You Are.
Catherine love that one too
But, all time fave is "Love Me Tender" Elvis
and "The Dance" Garth Brooks

I would have to break it down by genres.
COUNTRY:
A real nice one,
When You Say Nothin At All - kieth Whitley or Alison Krauss
But In 1955 Kitty Wells charted this one written by Jimmy Work and covered by nearly every Country music star since. I pick it because my dad sang it and when he did it seemed like there was an untold story in his past.
It has all all the makings of a perfect country song. A steel guitar, a key change in the middle, a honky tonk piano and a sad story.
I chose the version by Emmy Lou Harris..... “Making Believe”

That one is wonderful.
Here is one that probably no one has heard of, but I LOVE this love song. I think it's in my top 3:

ETA: Also, I love Paul McCartney so I have to put in votes for:
When I'm 64
I Will
Maybe I'm Amazed
"I love you in a place (http://www.definitions.net/definition/place) where there's no space (http://www.definitions.net/definition/space) or time
I love you for my life, 'cause you're a friend (http://www.definitions.net/definition/friend) of mine
And when my life is over, remember (http://www.definitions.net/definition/remember) when we were together
We were alone (http://www.definitions.net/definition/alone) and I was singin' my song for you"

George Harrison, Eric Clapton... Something.
Eric Clapton.. Wonderful Tonight
EDIT: made me think about one that was also written for another gal who had two songs written for her. Peter Gabriel... Your Eyes
Marc Cohn.. True Companion
And my favorite, the one that makes people give you that look then laugh:

Life is Better with You - Michael Franti & Spearhead
Say Hey (I Love You) - Michael Franti & Spearhead
Thank You - Led Zeppelin
You're the Love of My Life - Wilson Pickett
Rod Stewart Have I told you lately that I love you
Behind closed Doors
I want to hold your hand
L.O.V.E. "L is for the way you look at me, O is for the only one I see, etc." -- there are many versions and not sure who wrote it but the recording I like best is by Nat King Cole. It is catchy, fun, and easy, could be good for community fun choir.

Close to You by The Carpenters
On The Radio by Donna Summer (This always makes me think of a woman I loved so much).
Suicide Is Painless (Not really a love song, but it was me and my wife's song)
So This is Love by Van Halen
catherine's nomination of "Just The Way You Are" is a great one. I like several of the others, as well.
Songs we played at our wedding included Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", Genesis' "Follow Me, Follow You", Firefall's "You Are The Woman", and some other songs not known for being heard at weddings and tied more to it being a wedding (and a second one for each of us at that).
Other songs I can think of would include Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World", Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You", The Captain and Tenille's "Love Will Keep Us Together", and Beyonce's/Jay-Z's "Crazy In Love". Some of those could be a lot of fun to sing!

The Captain and Tenille's "Love Will Keep Us Together"
Oh, hell yeah! Such a fun song. :)
Thank you for all the suggestions. I have passed them along to our director It will be fun to see what is finally sung.

As Time Goes By from Casablanca is one we had the piano player play at our wedding. We had kind of a thing for Bogart and Bacall when we were younger.

I think one of the most romantic songs ever written is "Crazy Love" by Van Morrison. Also, in a different vein, but I think is incredibly romantic but in a sexy way is Leonard Cohen's "Take This Waltz".
ooh, yeah, Van Morrison: "Have I told you lately that I love you..."
Another Leon Russell one I love is "This Masquerade." Kind of wistful, and the melody is so, so hypnotic:
Are we really happy with this lonely game we play?
Looking for words to say, searching but not finding understanding anyway
We're lost in this masquerade
Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play
Thoughts of leaving disappear every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons why we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

Our Love is Here to Stay
It's very clear our love is here to stay
Not for a year but ever and a day
Oh the radio and a telephone, movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go
But oh my dear our love is here to stay
Together we're going on a long, long way
In time the rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay but our love is here to stay
That's a great Gershwin song!
Reminds me of a couple of old movie musicals...
Not suitable for a Valentine's Day chorus, but I've always been a sucker for songs from what I call the Codependent's Songbook. That would include songs like As Long as He Needs Me from Oliver ("Who else would love him still / When they've been used so ill?") and Something Wonderful from the King and I ("You'll always go along // Defend him when he's wrong."). There are others, but those are the two songs that stand out as two that stand out.
Speaking of Gershwin, one of my favorites is "I've Got a Crush on You".
Another one is U2's "All I Want Is You"

Sting, "Fields of Gold". So intimate. When he sings "Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth among the fields of gold", just one word in that line makes it so much more intimate and personal. "Mouth" instead of lips. I don't know. Just incredibly beautiful and romantic.
The group choir sings on Monday, Feb 5 so will report on songs chosen. The director needed the music sheets to help the volunteer mini-band that accompanies and the words are posted on a screen for the singers to follow. Thanks for all the suggestions which were passed along.
We had fun last night singing with a larger turnout than usual so it was a positive plus to do in our community.
We had the choice of 42 songs and sang most of them in about 90 minutes with a very short prior commentary on each song.
All I ask of you (phantom of the opera)
And I love you so
As time goes by
Can't help falling in love with you
Cherish
Close to you
Daydream believer
Evergreen
Groovy kind of love
Hi-lili. hi lo (a song of love is a sad song song)
Honey
If (Bread)
I just called to say "I love You"
I'll have to say I love in a song
Jean
Leaving on a jet plane
Love is mine
Love me tender
My cup runneth over
My sweet lady (john Denver)
People will say we're in love
Perhaps love
the Rose
The shadow of your smile
Someone to watch over me
Something stupid
Somewhere my love (Dr Zhivago)
Somewhere out there
Tea for two
There's a kind of a hush
Three coins in a fountain
Time in a bottle
Today
The twelfth of Never
The way we were (mem'ries)
WE'll meet again (vera Lynn)
What I did for love
What the world needs now
When I fall in love
When I grow too old to dream
Where is your heart (moulin Rouge)
Wind beneath my wings
Nice selection, razz. Sounds like it was a great event.
