I just heard of the sentence handed down to Larry Nassar. I wanted to post that in this case, especially with multiple instances of sexual assault, I could not agree more with the judge. I may be a bit of a men's rights activist but in this case there is no excuse for Nassar's actions, PERIOD.
I'm glad this man will be kept out of society. Rob

you are too calm so I will get you riled up. These St. Louis University innocents have had their lives ruined (in Rob Talk) by unproven charges.

http://fox2now.com/2018/01/19/3-slu-basketball-players-suspended-1-expelled-after-sexual-assault-investigation/Uh uh uh IL.....one bit of drama at a time.....I'm still recouping from drama this morning with two homeless men going assault mode on each other right outside the loading dock.....lots of drama about negligent security in the air over this one. Let's just be glad here and now that justice was served in the Nassar case, no? Rob

I was disappointed in the attitude and demeanor of the presiding Judge. Yes, I understand the defendant is a reprehensible piece of ......lower than whale poo but of all in the cast of characters the Judge must keep a professional decorum. I found her reading of the defendants statement to be a bit of grandstanding and taunting, the way she flipped the paper aside and then challenged the defendant in open court saying, “Because you’re guilty, right?” She seemed to enjoy playing to the media.
I have had Judges be firm and direct when sentencing but never make a statement about how they are going to enjoy themselves. Just an observation. A very sad case but I don’t think it’s over. Thta first complaint that wasn’t pursued is going to scuff somebody up.
Williamsmith, I had the same reaction to the judge--the comment about "I just signed your death sentence," or whatever it was. Hate for her to give him any grounds for appeal, and glad that he will be in prison the rest of his life.
Those poor, poor girls.

The judge was unprofessional. Ugh!
I agree. The judge was very unprofessional. She almost seemed like a bad actor. Very inappropriate and unprofessional.
He was a skeevy little ferret, wasn't he--making excuses up until the end. Good riddance to him.
Fascinating. A doctor molests 150+ children over *years*, clearly while his supervisors/staff/colleagues enabled the behavior, and the comments are about the judge’s failings....

I didnt watch the judge commenting but I want to have trust in The Legal System that finally brings blatent predators down. A judge who acts like a reality show star doesnt give me an impression that grownups are in charge. Nassar will need a firm hand throughout his life in the judicial system—firm, consistent, and unemotional, like one would treat a biting dog.
bae......I don't think any of us said anything negative or discounting about the girls that he abused. What he did was unforgivable. Expecting a judge to remain professional is not expecting too much.
There are people who would be unhappy about anything the judge had done. Case of damned if you do and if you don't. Too professional = uncaring. Too much caring = reality star.
OMG, he pled guilty and then he tried to blame everyone after pleading guilty by writing a 6 page single spaced plea for "understanding" to the judge.

Hello.....he wanted it to be about accommodating what he could handle emotionally??? Selfish to the bitter end is my take.
Regardless of my men's rights activism, in this case I actually applaud the judge for letting the victims come forward and personally confront the defendant. There just is no excuse for this behavior, period, and I hope a message is sent to those who would perpetrate similar crimes. I really resent Nassar - as a male he makes my half of the human race look bad. And there is just no excuse whatsoever for his sexual misconduct to put it nicely.....none whatsoever. Rob

Expecting a judge to remain professional is not expecting too much.I honestly believe this particular case was so low - the defendant's actions were so horrible - that a judge would have to have been cast out of cast iron to remain 100% professional. I would have questioned a judge that did not display some form of disgust. I understand your point Cathy, and I don't disagree completely with you - but I also believe that I could not have maintained professionalism in this courtroom in any capacity.
I think of the young daughters of some of my neighbors and I just want to throw up that men like Larry Nassar exist. I also want to throw up that men like Larry Nassar feed radical feminist views that all men are potentially like this - men like Larry Nassar make it harder for average everyday men to be part of this society and I resent this very deeply (I resent men like Nassar for this to be clear). This one time, the legal system did right by the victims and what kind of justice can be served was indeed served. And I also agree with your last sentence and it's take on Nassar. Rob

Just came back to add - had I been on a jury for a case like this, this is not something I would auto-vote not guilty for. This would have been a guilty vote from yours truly. Rob

Just got off the phone with some folks in the neighborhood and it seems as if there are those in the 85006 who believe that Trump will pardon Nassar as he did Arpaio..........PLEASE don't ever confuse me as being a supporter of Donald J. Trump. That said, I truly don't believe Trump would be so stupid as to pardon Nassar. Anyone else have any faith that Nassar will remain unpardoned? Rob
I have faith. Nassar can't do anything for Trump.
I can't imagine a circumstance in which there would be a pardon issued by the President for this case.
I don't think the judge's comments were out of line--a lot of judges editorialize when issuing sentences.
At least she didn't blame the victims, let the perp off easy, or make some offensive social commentary.
Next up, the complicit people who looked the other way. For years.

I heard an interview with one of his victims and she said she told her parents and they didn't believe her. :(

I remembered an NPR story, maybe on This American Life? Where a reporter confronted her gymnastics coach about the sexual abuse she suffered at his hands when she was a child. He didnt own up to it.
When I searched for info on this story I found many such stories, I mean at least 6-8. One oredator killed himself while in prison. Sexual abuse of children is rife in gymnastics. Whoah.

By and large, I think judges should limit themselves to the proper operation of the law, and leave the moralizing to ordained clergy and basic cable comedy shows. Gloating over "signing your death warrant" would seem to detract somewhat from the public perception of the legal system's impartiality.

This is the same Judge that was a member of the Army National Guard, nicknamed Barraccuda Aquilina, writes crime novels and believes her assignment to the Nassar case was preordained by God. I’m surprised she didn’t get down from the bench and slap Nassar in the face on behalf of the entire human race.

Maybe if the next election was closer.

In this case my personal take is that justice was served. I very much see this situation as the other extreme from a false assault claim - this one deserves the maximum penalty that the law allows. The numerous young women involved deserve no less and I wish all of them healing and peace going forward in life. I also give kudos to the judge for her kind and supportive words to the victims - and once again, I say this as a men's rights activist. When a man does something like this - especially to so so so many victims - he deserves the maximum penalty. So I see it anyway. Rob
I fail to see what “men’s rights” have to do with this case.
