Let me first start out by saying that I am not artistic. Granted, when I was young I could play the guitar. I wrote songs and played in a band.

But other than that I could never draw or paint sculpt.

A couple weeks ago, on a whim, I bought a sketch pad and some colored pencils. Every night since then I have been drawing a picture or two. On each drawing I will write the date.

My plan is to fill up the entire sketch pad (it is a couple hundred pages). Then when it is full I will review it and see if I have developed any artistic skills!

Anyone else trying some wacky new hobbies? Progress? Setbacks? Having fun?

I have been taking some drawing classes and also use colored pencils trying to reawaken the artist within from long ago. I recently did a self-portrait where my sunglasses reflected the mountains I love here. Van Gogh did many self portraits as he could not afford models. I will take more sketching classes when life settles down a bit as I think it is akin to meditation to create images on blank pages. It is especially insightful to go back and look at all the sketches.

Newest hobbies;
Sewing, start /quit/start/quit. Better than ever before, not the level I want.
Pinterest ideas is my hobby of the moment;) Ideas for old china uses and vintage kitchen ideas.

I am deeply curious about this darawing thing.

are you working from life? (You could draw everything you own!) photos? Memory? Imagination? What style(s) of drawing are you choosing? Is your goal technical perfection? Composition or focus? Are you working on really seeing?

UL said he had a couple hundred pages to fill. He'd have to draw everything he owns multiple times. :~)

Are you working on really seeing?
I wonder if that can't happen rather naturally. Kind of the way sushi chefs in Japan start off making rice or slicing vegetables. Only that task. Every day. With no end until the master chef declares the end product as good as it can get. Repeated exposure to the same kind of work, I think, (should) breed an introspection which aids the process of "really seeing".

Oh I highly recommend this book, plus maybe The Artist's Way. I love it for the overall focus on creative process.Enjoy the drawing, I have tried and go back to creating anything I can imagine with yarn.

Grandma Moses began painting at age 76.

Previously she embroidered. Arthritis made holding a needle impossible, but she could hold paint brushes for up to 6 hours. She painted from memory on pieces of Masonite on her kitchen table, from the top of the painting down. Some of her early paintings were for sale at $3 to $5 at a drug store near her farm. A New York art collector, Louis Calder, discovered them, bought every one, and got directions out to the farm to buy more, directly. She painted (at least a little) every day from age 78 to 101 (shortly before her death).

If I hadn't started painting, I'dda raised chickens. --Grandma Moses

Sometimes I draw little sketches from a beginner's art instruction book. Other times I will try to copy the sketch or drawing someone else has done. Other times I have drawn "expressively" where it is just something from my imagination.

I don't think I have any big goals. But then other times I think: "I would like to draw creatively and express myself in a way that I want to look at the picture and so do others." haha

I can't draw worth a darn myself, but I really wish I could. Recently, I was inspired by a scene in "The Americans" where an artist growled at "Elizabeth Jennings" to "Look at it (a mug on a table). Draw the dark parts. Don't draw the light parts. Now!"

Maybe that's the only type of drawing instruction I can understand!

As a lifelong watercolor painter, sketcher, quilter, Potter, glassworker etc. my only suggestion is to do whatever you want to do. No rules, no pressure, just personal enrichment. And do what you enjoy the most.

My whole life I have heard “you should sell your ...”. I have sold some pieces, especially Pottery, but only because my house is full. The money I get goes to supplies. I have blue ribbon quilts that I have on my beds and walls, I use them everyday, plus an heirloom quilt for each grandchild put away.

The biggest lesson I ever learned was years ago I had a quilt hanging in a show that I loved. A girlfriend and I were standing near it and an observer said “who would put those god awful colors together”. I thought we would die laughing. Anyway, it got a ribbon in the show so somebody liked it, and someone wanted to buy it. I can see it right now on the back of the couch.
In another show I had made a New York Beauty quilt. I had a pile of colored fabric that I had put together, but randomly picked them out of a bag. It got a blue ribbon with the comment “beautiful color placement”

so just enjoy.

Art is incredibly subjective. What one person loves will make another person ask "What the $&*#??". I have professional artist friends who have submitted essentially the same work to different competitions and galleries and some go for it and some are never heard from again. Some works sell before they're finished and others languish for a couple of years.

So, UL, never mind what others say. Even those schooled in art history or with degrees in fine art have their own preferences and filters. Make art for yourself.

A few more; these are "human" figures I drew as minimalistically as I could. The figures are inspired by former girlfriends of mine. All the sketches are admittedly rough, and I don't use an eraser.

None of these is especially original. I just took a totally nondescript figure drawing and then change curves, angles, colors, etc. to be shaped and colored like the subjects (in my memory).

I so admire quilters. It's a beautiful medium, and aside from having to visualize how all those pieces of fabric should come together, quilters engage in a very time-consuming task! I don't have the patience for that kind of work.

I love drawing, although I just picked it up again after a very, very long absence. It's very meditative, and I like drawing in charcoal or black and white as opposed to color because I can concentrate on form and shadow.

I just started drawing again as a way to absorb some of the knowledge I've been exposed to in my Master Gardener class. With so much to learn about plants and trees and shrubs, I started drawing botanicals in order to help cement them in my mind--and also to appreciate their beauty.

In retirement I've been dabbling with a few things. I have a long backyard fence at my rental house which is dark brown. Pretty drab, so I decided to find and paint some bird houses to hang there. It's been fun to go to thrift stores and pick out different shapes and sizes, and then either paint them entirely or just add some bright paint touches. There's about a dozen up now and it definitely brightens the yard.

Now I've moved on to rock painting. I'm going to try some transfer art and some stencil designs, then some glaze over top of that. I have an empty circular area in my back yard that needed something and painted rocks should brighten that up too.

I think it's great for everyone to indulge in some kind of creative stuff, even as basic as mine. Enjoy and keep going, Ultralight!

How do you like handling/using tools?

I'm glad you asked! I think I am by nature someone who is more inclined to the zen of hand tools. But power tools are - well - powerful! And I feel powerful when I use them! Some interesting exchanges in our class:
DH to Rosa: Well, we would really know how to do this kind of basic project anyway without taking a class.
Rosa: No way, not me. You got to take shop when you were a youngster, and I was learning how to sew an apron. This is a whole new world for some of us!
Guy in class: You know, if you get the saw spinning to full speed before you bring it down to the wood, you will get a cleaner cut.
Rosa: Thanks! You're right, so much better!
Rosa's sister: Did you get what he's saying? This is all Greek to me!
Rosa: I got some of it, and we'll figure out the rest together.
Can't remember who to who, but Rosa finds out there is a laser line from the miter saw showing where to cut. I was using the shadow of the saw blade. Subsequent testing shows that it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
DH and I did put down hardwood floors throughout our house, and he showed me how to cut the hardwood strips with our small miter saw. That was very cool and we built some awesome floors, and that was really my only power tool experience before this class.

I am not sure which yoga pose. She got into yoga a few months ago and loves it! She also, despite being a big gal, has no qualms about displaying her body (and we're good, trusted friends, though not romantic or anything). So when I told her about my art project she was more than happy to pose. Very helpful!

Passing by a large field of sunflowers recently, I had to stop and take these pictures. They are grown for sunflower oil, I believe.

I think you are doing some amazing stuff, UL. You should buy some oils, some watercolors, an easel, pastels, a palette, some brushes, a beret - lol - only kidding.
Great photos, Razz! There is a farm around here with a big field of sunflowers. Your photos remind me that I need to seek it out.

I don't like portraits at all (I also don't like numbers on clocks)...
but I really like the Heroin Junkie one. The colors and drippiness of it.

I am about halfway through my art project year. So far I have only used colored pencils.

In October I will start using oil pastels for the last six months of the experiment. I am really looking forward to it. And oil pastels are surprisingly affordable. A basic set is only about $20 or less.

This has actually been on of the better lifestyle experiments I have done. Art has been as mentally and emotionally rewarding at my year of meditation (which extended to two years because it was so good!).

Around six months in, I'd suggest a similar experiment to anyone!

Nice. I enjoy pastels and have played with them a bit both soft and oil. Have a small collection of abstract landscape originals from an artist we met in Chicago area when he was just starting out. In fact I think we may have been his first customer at his first show. He's gone on to become very successful.
