So pretty IL! I'm really drawn to purples this year and wouldn't you know it my lilacs all got something and died over the winter. I had 6. Your blooms are beautiful!

I get these kinds if baskets at rhe thrift stores, really cheap. I use plastic food containers and half a block or so of wet foam. These are pretty cheap to put together, probably $1.50 each.

We have 4 varieties of lilac at our Hermann house. Some have even been pruned correctly.

New to so many of the plants here so it is a lot of fun watching things start to bloom and grow in the yard which some previous owner put in. Lilacs are new to me and the yard is full of them. I actually took some shoots from the ground and put more along the fence and they are doing just fine. Bulbs popping up - daffodils, tulips, hyacinths...what DH calls "old lady" plants :)

It was pretty, up and until the singing part.

Hermann has a Maifest, wonder if they dance thru the woods. We will see, it is a couple of weeks from now.

I wished someone a happy May Day today and didn't get a response. I don't know if they thought I was a Communist.

On the Iron Range of northern Minnesota one used to occasionally hear The Internationale sung in Finnish. Here is Billy Bragg's English lyric...

Stand up, all victims of oppression,
For the tyrants fear your might.
Don't cling so hard to your possessions,
For you have nothing, if you have no rights.
Let racist ignorance be ended,
For respect makes empires fall.
Freedom is merely privilege extended,
Unless enjoyed by all.

Chorus:
So come brothers and sisters,
For the struggle carries on.
The Internationale
Unites the world in song.
So comrades come rally,
For this is the time and place.
The Internationale ideal
unites the human race.

Let no one build walls to divide us...
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone.
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us.
We'll live together, or we'll die alone.
In our world poisoned by exploitation
Those who have taken, now they must give. And end the vanity of nations...
We've but one earth on which to live.

And so begins the final drama
In the streets and in the fields.
We stand unbowed before their armour.
We defy their guns and shields.
When we fight, provoked by their aggression,
Let us be inspired by like and love;
For though they offer us concessions,
Change will not come from above.

Thanks for that Dado Potato; I'd like to see more pushback against the status quo, and that's a masterful rendition of L'internationale.

I used to think “mayday” the distress signal had something to do with communism, but I later learned that it was just a corruption of the French for “help me”.

I see Marx’s 200th birthday is coming up. No doubt we will be hearing that real communism has never been tried. May it be ever so.
