I checked my BMI. It is 28.8 -- which means I am almost obese!

At 5'9" and 195 lbs. I am on the verge of joining America's obesity epidemic.

Here is a link to NIH's BMI calculator.

Don’t let it bother you. We have the food industry to make us sick and the pharmaceutical industry to make was better. And both accept credit cards. A perfect symbiotic relationship. Between sugar and mono sodium glutamate.......you don’t stand a chance.

Do what I do.....add an inch to your height and shave off five pounds. The result run through the calculator will make you feel better about yourself and it’s easier than looking for healthy food to eat.

I am 23.3. Recently lost 8lbs. Hoping to lose maybe 10 more...

That said, I agree that neither the food industry nor the medical community have an interest in people's long term heath.

25.1, which is .2 above Normal Weight, and I eat whatever I want, whenever I want. Outside of my stunningly good looks and exceedingly rational views, just another reason for people to aspire to be me. ;)

I am far outside their envelope, in the mid-30s. And I am a bit dad-bod-ish.

I also have odd physical construction, in that most of my bones are at the 99th percentile in thickness/density due to some wacky genetic issues. I also have a fair bit of atypical muscle throwing off the calculation. At the age of 55, I just passed our mandatory agility/skills/performance exams for structural firefighting, which includes monitoring of EKG, air consumption, and some pulmonary function tests in the top 25% of our department.

Interestingly, I am “22.8” but just an inch short of “dangerous abdonimal fat” due to having no waist - I am neither an apple, an hourglass, nor a pear, more of a dented can. Also, I am currently six pounds heavier than my knee pain limit.

I'm just a smidge under 24, lots of muscle (aka peasant legs meant for pulling plows) and some good size bones (a chiropractor told me a few years ago that I'd be unlikely to have to worry about a hip fracture due to the size of the bones). And a good chunk of sweets/extra helpings/alcohol extra fat coating it all.

Before I retired I had managed to get in the obese category. Then I retired and lost 40lbs and now only overweight :~)

I've always been an ectomorph, but my BMI is running higher than usual:22.9. Probably due to some carb cravings, including wine. Otherwise, I'm pretty accepting of my weight. During my child-raising years and up until my 50s, I was too underweight to be able to give blood. (<110). Sometimes I yearn for those years, but then again, underweight older women are not attractive. At that stage, a little "meat on the bones" goes a long way.

I never had a weight problem until 50 when I developed a too fast and erratic heartbeat along with HBP and asthma. Have to be on a beta blocker for my heart and quickly got fat and tired. I was walking 6-8 miles/day back then. Now I walk 4.

How did you find this out? I have a belly. An ex-girlfriend saw me shirtless a few days ago and said: "UL, you have a real dad-bod!"
She and I dated back when I was almost 50 lbs. lighter! haha

A 35 inch or large waist in women or a 40 inch or more waist in men can supposedly indicate an unhealthy amount if abdominal fat - there was an article in The NY Times. I’m not sure why men get so many more inches - we have more internal organs.

It is worse if the fat around the stomach is hard versus soft. I worked with a guy like this and his doctor said it was a huge health risk.

36.6 I'm down 22 pounds in 6 months.

Abdominal fat: the more dangerous fat is that surrounding organs in the abdomen. Subq fat is less dangerous.

My last BMI was 20.1. I'm down 3 lbs this year which I attribute to more walking - retirement and dog-walking gig.

My Maltese that’s only one loves to sleep with his head on my tummy. My DH calls it a Buddha belly. He may not get to live. Max also likes to put his little head down my shirt and sleep like that. I guess doggies can be perverts:))

21.1.

Apparently waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios are better metrics than BMI. And, of course, waist size, as already described.

This site has many calculators:

My “ diet and exercise program”:
Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants.
Move.

My waist is 39. I can't figure out where to measure for the hips though.

The hips are the widest oat of you below the waist - so just keep letting the tape out until you can slide it to the ground. Your hips are a touch under that.

Men with a waist circumference of 40+” are at high risk of metabolic syndrome. Luckily it’s easy to lose visceral fat, which brings the waist measurement down quickly.

Just for interest, I came across this: https://www.npr.org/2014/07/25/332641840/the-average-american-man-is-too-big-for-his-britches. Now I’m going to try find a comparable article for women!

I also don’t have a diet and exercise program. I walk a fair amount, getting around, and my husband and I take an evening walk. I buy whole fresh fords and cook from scratch - probably, in terms of calories, roughly equal plant and animal source foods. Most of what I eat is low-glycaemic index. My weight cycles between 123 and 128lb.

I have noticed post-menopausal shape-shifting, so I bought a figure-8 resistance band, and I do around 15 minutes every second day. I swim three days a week, for pleasure more than profit. I’ve been building back up, after a year out of the water, and should be back to a mile ny the end of next week. I float and stretch after ever 10 lengths, and I swim at a leisurely pace.

So I have the BMI of someone from Ethiopia! That is pretty funny. I feasted on lobster roll with avocado and blueberry pie with ice cream for dinner tonight. I don't think the pie comes a la mode in Ethiopia.

Apparently I am above average in height for everywhere and proportionately below average in weight, which makes no sense to me at all, because I feel like my body shape is out of proportion in height/weight in the other direction - or perhaps it’s simply that more than half the women on the planet could stand to lose a few pounds?

I’ve started watching what I eat and cutting out the sugar and carbs for now. My goal is to lose 10-15 lbs. That would put me around 190 with a BMI in the 25 range.
