View Full Version : July Purge
I have culled three shirts to be donated. In the midst of the summer season, it is easier for me to assess what summer items I really don't want to wear and to enjoy the many things I own that I do want to wear. This brings me to a net outflow of 15 clothing items in 2018.
Rosarugosa I am in for July...I have been lacking off on the decluttering and a lot of other things too....lol
Taking July 01 as the first day of this half of the year and getting my life in order.
4 pc sheet set ---charity
5 magazines---recycle
1 old photo album taken apart pictures of scenery out...those of people kept
1 more old photo album taken apart but it was a good fancy one so off to...charity
1 Christmas towel...charity
1 pillow I was repairing for a friend fixed and returned to her...it was at my sewing machine for months.
1 cloth bag.....for another friend same as above
1 pair of pants turned into capri's for Dd....same deal as above.
1 wrought iron plate holder...had enough room in pantry for my large dinner plates; mostly only use for company
Total today is 16...aiming for 150 for the month
Also, posted 13 items on KIJIJI and some on Etsy...but sadly they are not out of the house yet
I'm finishing up the handstitching on 2 new charity quilts that will go to group on July 14:cool: That will be 11 yards of fabric out of my stash along with a piece of batting 54*120!
I sent a whole box full of odds and ends of "hardware" and tools to my church for Circulation Day---
which was postponed from yesterday to next Saturday, as the teens wanted to go to the march for "Families Together!"
Side note, I am so proud of those kids! They also organized a carpool and rounded up about 85 adults to go.
A lunchbox. I could never get it really clean despite washing it in both the sink and the washing machine. I replaced it with one that sparks joy.
Some dingy plastic utensils. The remaining unbroken pieces of a set of plates and saucers.
July 02
--3 books to charity
--grocery bag of paper from sewing room to recycle
--small bag of bit and bobs from craft/sewing area to garbage
Total to date 16
July03/18
5 books to charity
1 bag of stuff from craft area to charity
1 bag of stuff from craft area to garbage
1 large bag of old patterns bought and created by me over many decades (things I will never ever make again)
, stuff clipped from magazines...many,many articles and ideas (all available online on Pinterest now) no need to keep! Recycled
10 pieces of jewellery to charity gift shop
8 baskets to Dd
2 dental floss I don't like to Dd
1 bean bag stuff toy (not sure were it came from...lol) to charity
Total to date 45..Yeah I am on a roll! My sewing craft area is all cleaned and sort. Of course doesn't mean there isn't more
I could move but, for know it is better and I can find what I do need.
A charger of unknown provenance I found in the glove box. It's too hot to do much.
T-shirt and book taken to Mom to disperse. She enjoys giving stuff away. Putting out a pair of shorts to give away, another pair will go after Laundry. A favorite t-shirt is getting small. Haven't decided if it goes yet.
July 04th and 5th
6 pair of shoes/boots to charity (why do I continue to buy shoes that are uncomfortable?)
------------------I think I would be better off paying more and having comfort.
1 pair of shoes in garbage
1 small box of odd and ends of Christmas stuff....to charity
Total to date is 53
Your efforts are impressive and motivating!
Finally cleared out the old DVD and all the controls, some china ornaments, unused oven gloves to Habitat for Humanity. I collect stuff in an old laundry basket and then it just sits there.
Took two bags of garden waste from garage to composting centre.
A clotheshanger. A free water test kit I brought home from Home Depot, then a day later I got the annual water quality report with my water bill. 5 saucers. A blanket left at the house by my ex that he didn't want back at the time, and which reminds me of him. 8 more pieces of plastic silverware. 3 bracelets - I never wear these because they annoy me when I work at the computer. 4 items of clothing. Two packages of mouse bait that never worked. A Tupperware lid. 5 hairclips because I just don't ever see myself letting my hair grow long again. 4 DVDs. An almost empty bottle of glu (I have another one).
The blanket went on its own. The rest filled up the kitchen trash bag starting to smell in the summer heat.

Danna, I don’t own many shoes but they are comfortable. I love easy spirit and they are expensive even on sale.
I agree, uncomfortable shoes aren't worth it even if they are free. I love Rieker and Merrell brands.
I'm mentally preparing myself for a pretty big purge and I know it's going to be hard because I'm down to all the stuff that is still in excellent condition, still useful, I still like it, but I don't need it or actually use it. It's all in the garage in plastic bins and while I could justify putting up shelving and keeping it, it's just excess stuff and the unfortunate side effect or consequence of living in a consumer society and having enough money to buy new things when the desire dictates rather than actual need.
I so often wish I wasn't so easily seduced by new and shiny stuff but alas, I am just like every other average American consumer. Too much stuff.
Nice to see you again, Geila!
Two pairs of pants and two vases out. I like to have an assortment of vases because I enjoy having cut flowers in my home, but there can definitely be too much of a good thing.
July 6th
Thanks for the shoe recommendations I will look into those.
Geila it is nice to see you here again! And, you are right we wouldn't have so much if we could resist...lol
8---tomato cages to the curb and someone picked them up in less then an hour.
Hopefully now someone will use them instead of them rusting in the back yard.
Total to date 61
Thanks for the welcome rosarugosa and danna!
The key to a shed I tore down several years ago. I also removed some keys I rarely use from my key ring and put them elsewhere. It feels so light!

I am so shocked but on this trip I realized that I have less stuff than anyone I have visited. Even with my husband having a few spots he has to much junk.
Three big pieces of black plastic. I use these under squash as supposedly they like heat but this year I think it has made them too hot as they haven't produced anything. I still have to cut out the plastic under the plants but my trash barrel is full now. With global warming I figured I may as well get rid of this all.
Also one pair of socks I wore so my pedicure wouldn't get ruined when I painted the front steps.
I'm still cramming stuff into the car; I'll probably deliver it this week.
And then start over.
After multiple rounds of declutter over 20 years, eliminating/reducing is more challenging. Today is the day! I'm in my studio today 30 minutes at a time (knee therapy underway but being up longer than that isn't working yet). I set a 30 minute timer.
I am sorting out quilting projects that are underway or leftovers. I've got them out in stacks. In doing so, 1 project is partial and arrived in the mail from a friend in Houston. It's Christmas themed. i got out my Christmas fabric bin (very little of my quilting fabric is binned). This bin is barely 1/2 full. Realizing that, and the fact that it's a gift wrap roll bin, I decided to eject the fabric, put the bit of wrapping paper and bows into it and.........
Voila! The wrapping paper standing container is in my trunk headed to Goodwill.
I have 3 finished large lap-size quilts that will go to my Charity group this coming Saturday.
I'm trying to decide if it would be easier for me to organize the extra stuff and just make space for it and keep it, or get rid of it. Overall my house is very good since I did the Kondo thing a while back and I have the room. Maybe forcing myself to go through the work of sorting, cleaning, and storing will keep me from buying more stuff in the future. A while back I made myself gather all my baskets (which I used to buy on impulse) and store/display them all together. I felt so foolish looking at all those stupid baskets! And I can honestly say that it cured me of my basket habit. I've had zero interest since then. Maybe I can do that with my stash of linens and decorations. I would love to never be tempted to buy things I don't need again.

Ack!
On another note, I found a pair of nice old french doors in our garage. dH drug them in from an alley. This makes for 3 sets of French doors we have rescued from the alley. Because we are, apparently, French Doors Rescue.
I noticed yesterday that we are down to 3 toilets being stored in our spare house. Once there were 5. Progress! Perhaps DH is easing out of being a UseLess Toilets R Us franchise.
IL you made me laugh. When we had toilets replaced my husband broke them with a sledge hammer and bundled it into a mulch bag for the trash...
I cut the remaining black plastic out from around the squash plants and threw it away.
IL and TT both made me laugh!
July 9th
--2 Yard Plastic foot stools out to the street...picked up in 15 mins
--5 planter/containers and 1 pkg for starting seeds...to curb and gone in 2 hours
--2 more magazines to seniors home
Total to date 80
Yes the ladies made me laugh too, we need to laugh at ourselves when we think of all the stuff we have accumulated..lol
I had a dream last night that someone came and put back in my house a bunch of stuff I had gotten rid of :~)
That's not a dream - that's a nightmare!!!
A bottle of gelatinous vitamins that had congealed together in the heat.
I just recently moved from an old decrepit house I've lived in with a range of different adults and children over 26 years. To a new home. Purging felt great. I brought many things in boxes and they are in the garage still. Even pots and pans...I am loathe to start bringing in more than absolutely necessary. I love this clean, uncluttered life.
Today I went through my nightstand where I keep undergarments and swimsuits.
Trash: 1 swimsuit, 1 bra, 1 hose
Goodwill: 5 bras, 1 spanx
i also discovered I have another 16 pr of black athletic socks-my preference for work. I'm set for another 2-3 years!

Finally! we purged the broken, useless greenhouse. So we are down another tiny house, haha.
But DH made me furious in the process. I cleaned it out and hired someone to remove the glass ( much of it broken) take out the bolts, pull it down and haul it all to our alley where it will be picked up by the garbage man or metal scrappers. So, yeah, it was my plan.
But I came home to find DH had removed all of the glass and was beginning to tear it down. Nooooooooo!!! He had two years to do that. Too late!
His mowing is far behind. His mower is broken and he has to fix that. When that is done he’ll have to go to Hermann to mow. Then he has to go to Iowa for several weeks, off and on, to take care of his elderly father. Our front porch is half way painted. Plus, heavy gardening season.
He has no time to do this low level labor of greenhouse gutting. . I was crazy mad!
Anyway it ended fine. The guy I hired removed the rest of the greenhouse. But of course, DH had to keep every scrap of the aluminum because he might get some money for it! Oh yeah, he will get about $10 for it. Thank the gods he hauled it off right away or I would have beaned him with all of that rusty old aluminum.

Our house came with a big shed in the backyard which DH loves because it holds all his junk. At least it is hidden. IL maybe hire out some of those tasks when your husband is gone taking care of his dad.
Today I have finished going through our armoire and closet. Another pile of items in the thrift store box. A small pile of t-shirts for hubby to take to the cabin for outside work. The ones he has there are ready for the trashcan.
I have a LOT of clothes that don't fit d/t weight gain in the 3y since my knee injury. I'm giving myself 1 year to take it off and wear these clothes or I'll get rid of 80% of my clothing next summer. I should be able to walk and cycle aerobically again in Sept/Oct.
11 hangers. When asked by store clerks if I want the hanger I have started saying no.
I've almost got a car full and plan to donate Monday. Then start all over. Four yard bags full of clothes as well as miscellaneous household items. I'm segueing into ruthless mode.
Old baking soda from the back of the fridge.
Jul 10th to Jul 13th
--1 pair of really old holey slippers to the trash, again they had stretched all out and were not
comfortable to work and probabley not safe either.
--1 stained tea towel and a stained napkin.... trash
--1 book to charity
I have a lot more stuff on KIJIJI and Etsy but that doesn't put them out of the house yet so not counting

The novelty of hiring stuff out has taken hold in my brain, and now I plan to hire the guy this fall to dig out encroaching bushes at our community garden. There is no law or rule or executove order that says someone in the community garden must do all of the work. My money, my choice!

To funny Rosa!
I am starting my big summer decluttering (yay!) and still have a dream of getting rid of 1,200 items in one year, though the closest I've ever gotten is somewhere in the 700s.
I'll have to look back and see what other totals from other months this year were to see where I'm at, but for this month, I'm starting with the 10 dried-out magic markers from my daughter's art corner that I got rid of yesterday.

Two useless ornamental objects added to the donation box.
More papers. I have now completed my decluttering goal for 2018 and have started working ahead on 2019. I also got rid of a gardening shirt, replacing it with an existing double-layered shirt that I don't have to wear anything under.

I have the goal to get rid of a set of 5 built-in shelves we had added to our living room some years ago. We will still have another set of shelves in that room, but it will leave an area clear for me to fit a desk in there and I really could use a desk. This means I need to move or declutter 5 shelves of stuff. Some of the books and items on those shelves are absolute keepers, so books/objects elsewhere in the house are culled to make room for those, if that makes sense. Anyhow, I have decluttered 9 books so far.
By the way, DH and I were at a concert Thurs. We resisted buying t-shirts not only from a frugality perspective, but also neither one of us wanted a new clothing item in on the spreadsheet!
Donations delivered. Now to start a new pile.

Jane, just curious: how far along are you in your donations, percentagewise? I know you've mentioned an ongoing decluttering/donation for some time now and I am admiring of your persistence. Have you chipped the mountain down to a molehill?

I now have a very full garage, full bedrooms, and 11 full bookcases throughout.. :( oh well, his many other good qualities make up for this, but darn ...

I never read a book again so out they go when I am done. I started decluttering 15 years ago. I got super serious 6 years ago when I retired. Sold half our furniture when we moved. I never used to notice how much stuff is in other people’s homes but do now which I find weird.

I'm still awed by being able to keep hundreds of books in my pocket via Kindle. Heaven.
I only keep richly-illustrated books and some cookbooks (that I never use) for the most part.
2 more bras out! And a loaf pan that always makes a too-dry bread. I'm going to buy a glass pyrex for the cabin. I'm done with that no-stick thing. I was going to toss a warped nonstick cookie sheet too but it's coming in handy for containing quilt piece cutting so for now, it's a keeper.

You all have motivated me to a next step in my decluttering, to check up on sales/pricing of a few things I've kept aside to eBay... I was very pleasantly surprised to see that they are bringing quite good prices currently! So I spent 3 hours today listing 53 items on eBay. Yes, a lot of time. I had to update my account, read and understand "new" procedures since I last used it- don't even know how long ago- take decent photos, write descriptions, etc. It was extremely HOT here today, so good use of inside time, with dogs sprawled on the floor in front of the fans to keep me company. I leave for 6 days tomorrow, be back just in time to see things finish up, collect $$, print labels, and ship next week. I will make some money, but more importantly, I will get rid of 3 bankers boxes of "good stuff." Thanks for the motivation!

I am purging iris. I am in the process of moving a couple hundred cultivars from St. Louis to Hermann. It will take a full year+. Probably I will bore all of you with this process.
I will probably take 10% with me and have to fine homes for the rest of them.
i am digging iris for special requests after I dig the best rhizomes for myself. This will probably get rid of another 20%-30%.
After that , I plan to invite members of my Iris
Society and my garden clubs to dig iris next May 2019 while they are in bloom. That is because, by then, there wont be signs to identify cultivars.

I may have already talked about this, but I found a pair of french doors in our garage. dH admitted to lulling them in from the alley. I used to have a thing for French doors but not so much now. As it is, we already have two sets of them squirreled away, and we have an existing set installed in our Hermann house. I reeeeeeeeeeelly do not think we will need a 4th pair of French doors for any renovation.
But these red ones are so nice! I sort of understand Dh’s action.
old ones are so much better than new crap.
I sued to have a thig for French doors
What was the verdict? Judge or jury trial?

I love French doors. But them on buy nothing and someone will be happy to have them. When we remodeled this house we gave much of the old stuff away. Truck reserved for Tuesday!

Thanks! 30 years ago I was very much into things I owned. No clue why things have changed. One thing that has never changed is my bottom line is kids and pets. Plus other family and friends.
IL, you need to have a big garage sale, and dedicate the money to something really fun, like plant purchasing in Hermann. Or just make it a Hermann travel back and forth fund.
Two ugly company T shirts and 7 coat hangers. Also had four light fixtures replaced - 1 broken, 2 rusted, 1 ugly.

My husband wanted to have a garage sale and I said no. Way too much work. Last one I had was 3 years ago.

No to garage sales! Our stuff is laregly worthless. There is an archetectural remnant place down the steeet where
I could dispose of these french doors in a responsible way. I just want stuff to be used, dont want money.

Depending on my mood I either give stuff away or put it on Craigslist.
How about an August 1 purge? Attacked my DH's office and piles upon piles of papers and magazines. After 10 years of promises to clean it up, I just couldn't take having a bio-hazard room collecting dust and what not.
Thought spouse would be upset, but as I saved his critical papers, he got into the spirit of the thing and dusted and vacuumed in there. He just might have been overwhelmed at the enormity of the task...
Sweet relief...
