We have a beautiful park at the end of our block and there is always litter left behind by park-goers. I have started picking up litter on my daily walks. Do you do this too?

I used to pick up litter on my frequent walks up the hill in my neighborhood; once a guy driving by asked if I were part of the garden club. Hahaha! No.

A family has since adopted this road (which leads to an elementary school), so there is no longer a litter problem.

Yes, all the time.

I pick it up in my walks around our park’s perimeter.

I pick it up on my property in a lower socio-economic neighborhood where it is considered perfectly ok to toss crap out of the car windwo. Also, it is common for car owners to pull over to the side of the street, and dump all of their garbage onto the curb. Lovely, lovely people. Not.

on my streetwhich is off the main drag, we dont have a litter problem.sure occasional stuff blows in, but it isnt constant.

I don't because of hygiene. I'm not a germaphobe but I'm not willing to take that much risk. My option would be to walk with gloves and bag and that just doesn't appeal to me.

No because a lot of bending over throws my back out. I have a little rake and shovel at home to pick up dog poop. When walking my dogs I of course bend over to pick up their poop. Now that I think of it I rarely see litter in the park by my house.

I used to bring a bag on my walks; now I would bring a bag and grabbers. I'm not much concerned with germs and I haven't seen medical waste around here, anyway.

The litter here was concentrated near the school--mostly candy wrappers and soft drink cups. I haven't seen much in years. Apparently the little flingers moved on.

Well, one of the reasons I pick ip litter around the park is because the bending is good cor my waistline. I’m glad I dont have back problems.

Sometimes I do, but it takes away from the mindful appreciation of my walk, so I don't do it most of the time. When I pick up litter, it's like I am donating my walk as a public service. Since walking is one of my most favorite things in life, I am just not that selfless.

If I volunteer for a "clean up" as I have for my local watershed organization. But just meandering around, no. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the litter in my own house/yard. (Although I do sometimes pick up paper and other things that have blown across the neighbors' yards into the park that adjoins my property, if it's near my property line).

Yes, when I am able. I usually find the plastic bags to put the garbage in so it works out.

Mostly yes. I won't stop my bike for most things while on a ride. Around the open spaces and trails near town the most common thing I see is dog poo in plastic bags. Why people bag up their pet waste and then leave both the waste plus the plastic is beyond me, other than a belief in the poop fairy. I won't pick those up.

I perfectly inderstand that, and sometimes I just want to be in the Zen of the walk. That means no trash pickup.

I know, one good thing about my garbage tossing ghetto neighbors is that they toss plastic bags with abandon, so I usually have a container in which to place their crap.

Liquour bottles, hair pieces (called “tumbleweaves” around here) fast food
and candy/snacks debris are the most common things. This time of year, fireworks are laying around. Sometimes dirty diapers are tossed out of car windows onto my flower beds.

I am officially tired of thiscrappy neighborhood where my big gardens are, and I am glad I am moving them to Hermann. But the f........ing deer are nasty there, so I cant win.

IL, are you moving to Herman permanently or still going to go back and forth between the houses? I wouldn’t want to live somewhere in which people are throwing garbage in my yard, etc. That is terrible. We live in town close to downtown but thankfully ours is a desirable area and most people keep their homes up well.

Where I live in St. Louis, a “nice”neighborhood, there is not a litter problem by my house.

My big gardens are in an adjacent neighborhood by a strip of fast food joints and with residents of littering mindset.the litter, plus the guns and drug culture surrounding us are making me very tired of those citizens and their actions.

in the public housing comlex just two blocks from where I live, the feds raided and rounded up a big drug selling ring this week.

I do not understand how so many miscreants can live in these publicly finded places be ause we are told, over and over, that bad behavior gets them kicked out. That new HUD rules are meant to keep hosuing complexes stable, filled with honest citizens. That the Government is here to help us, essentially.

Yeah, right.

I totally forgot that your gardens weren’t by your house.

I have picked up litter going by and will continue to do so but I don't make a special effort to do so. What I and my walking friend try to do during every walk on a nature trail is clear the branches, walnuts etc on the trail that could trip another or make a problem for the cyclists using the trail.
Every windstorm brings a new selection to work with.

A word to the wise...
My daughter related this story she was told by one of her patients.
Lady went to visit her brother unannounced, he wasn't home but she was troubled by his ordinarily perfect front yard covered with trash.
She spoke to him later in the evening and it turned out to be fast food bags loaded with used hypodermic needles...
Be very careful picking up trash!

no but I rescued electronic waste from the apartment dumpster today and am going to take it to electronic waste. Yea I now have electronic waste clutter in my apartment that isn't even mine. But things really should be disposed of properly. It's not something I set out to do, I was just dumping some trash, it's just something I feel obligated to do sometimes.

Ive picked up litter (mainly food packaging) near the apartment building where I live. When I have time, I will look at the grounds around me and pick up stuff. I am amazed at the amount of plastic that is discarded and have realized it's a major issue not merely for me but for everyone. It's not easy to replace it with other materials but sometimes you can avoid using it to begin with. The food coop to which I belong has formed a group of members and staff to examine how we might use less plastic packaging for our prepared foods and other products.

On my property yes, except one time there was a needle and I didn't touch that. A neighbor saw it and removed it. He is a retired police officer and knew the protocols for getting rid of it. It is not supposed to go in the regular trash.

Other places occasionally.
