Okay, coming at you with another top 5.
I was discussing with my ladyfriend how certain foods are not just staples in my (admittedly mostly flavorless) diet but also ones I think are especially valuable.
These are foods I spring for with more cash than seems logical. These are also foods I think are especially nutritious or anomalously yummy.
1. Organic blueberries
2. Organic eggs
3. Oatmeal
4. Ocean fish (tuna steaks or Alaskan sockeye salmon fillets)
5. Valencia peanut butter
Your turn!

That's a good healthy list.
These are things I eat a lot and are easy and versatile:
Quinoa
Lentils
Greens, raw or cooked
Tomatoes
Avocados
If I had one more I'd add sweet potatoes. And avocado and coconut oils.
I'm binging on olives these days. Yum.
PB&J is always good (all organic, no sugar, whole grain etc.)

Avocados is another good one!
If I had a couple honorable mentions I would say kefir and sauerkraut (the local, organic kind made by Krazy Kraut).
Oatmeal
yogurt
berries of all kinds
peppers, onions, tomatoes, and salads of all kinds
cheese
chickpeas - Ok, this is # 6

Yes! I love them all too -- from straw to blue to mul to rasp and beyond! Berries are probably the one food that I love the taste of and that is also healthy.
hmmm, for me, this is seasonal. In the summer, its whatever is fresh from my garden (typically green beans, tomatoes, zucchini). I'm having a banner year in the berry department so lots of those. In the fall, its root vegetables and fennel. In the winter, its Indian food.
Stuff I like all year round: peanut butter (on toast for breakfast), cheese (Irish cheddar is a favorite), bread, chocolate, coffee. I could not live happily if I had to be without one of those 5.
Lots of greens - use in smoothies, salads and sauteed
Onions
Bananas
Any bean, but black beans are tops right now
Berries and cherries. Rainer right now!
If I had just 5 things in my pantry to get me through the weekend, I'd pick
Coffee
bananas
eggs
smoked salmon
Crusty bread (can I piggyback butter on my 5th thing?)
But I would also hope that I had stuff to make soup. Soup is my favorite bang-for-the-buck dish ever. Any kind, but mainly those with lots of good veggies.
Carrots
Celery
Onions
Tomatoes
Spinach or kale
Garlic
Mushrooms
Lentils
Herbs

Catherine, you and I must be kindred spirits, as I could have written your exact list and will be making your soup tomorrow with just those ingredients. Minus the mushrooms as DH won't eat them while I crave them.
And the smoked salmon and a good green salad is a fav meal. I would only add a dark, high content chocolate to the mix for gustatory bliss.
It's summer......
berries
watermelon
cheese
salmon-grilled
salad (yes that's like 7 things:~)

bananas frequently make an appearance here, like I said I don't know about healthiest ... as I eat other fruits sometimes (but I prefer veggies), but I go days where I eat a banana every day.
Yogurt
Bananas
Granny Smith apples
Soft baked apple cinnamon bars
Milk

Excellent and illuminating top fives!
I couldn't possibly narrow it down to five, but staples include:
eggs
beef
anything in the allium family: onions, scallions, garlic, shallots...
bathtub-sized mixed salads
butter, cheese
coffee (I came across my great-grandmother's grocery list in the Oregon Archives, and coffee was high on her list, too.)
You said foods...to me, coffee is a beverage...if I had to mention coffee, it would be #1 on my list of must haves!

Allium genus! I love to
1) eat some of them cold (in salads)
2) eat some of cooked, everything is better with garlic and cooked onion
3) grow them as ornamentals in my garden, they are striking
4) make floral designs using them, especially dried heads
They are the best universal plant there is!
Yeah, that's why coffee was an afterthought.
I can't imagine life without alliums. When I met my beloved, he wasn't sure he liked onions, but I made it a condition of engagement. :laff:
