News of John McCain’s death last evening brought great sadness across our nation. He served our country his whole life, and admitted his faults. Rest In Peace.
My condolences. A unique and courageous man.
I know that some will try to diminish him in some way for political reasons but i think of those as drowning people who have to clamber on another trying to survive.
Until one has walked in McCain's shoes over his lifetime, one has limited understanding of his choices and rationale for his decisions. RIP.

He was a awesome man. Although, I am a democrat I really respected how he didn’t come home from Vietnam early by taking the Vietcong deal but remained with his men. I saw a documentary on it. He put country before party.

Though it's true that I live in the 85006 and therefore am a Democrat as realistically I have no other option - I did respect John McCain, especially for his willingness to stand up to Trump and for the political payback he doled out to Trump via derailing The Thug of Orange's attempt(s) to repeal ObamaCare. Who knows how many lives this man saved via standing up to the Thug of Orange with one simple word - "No". Amazing how just one word can save human lives. RIP Mr. McCain. Rob

I agree. And if I remember correctly, did he say "no" or did he simply give a thumbs down in front of the Senate in that very dramatic appearance on the floor?

When running for president a woman at a town hall meeting said Obama was Arab and McCain defended Obama’ saying he was a decent man. He had integrity.
A vanishing breed--an old school Republican, capable of working across the aisle. We need to bring that kind back.
So sad he's gone. :( What a brave, good man.
It's a sad commentary on our times that so many of us can't eulogize a guy without taking swipes at someone else they don't like.

I have been following the coverage and he is to lie in state at the Capitol and have services at the National Cathedral. All day wonderful tributes to him have been published. But there are a few who have been tweeting or writing hate in comments of news articles. Over on Fox the number of negative and hateful comments about what a traitor and coward he was have been staggering. Bots? Who knows but it is truly disgraceful. I doubt I would have made it very long through torture and he endured five years. Also there is great discussion about who will take his seat when appointed by the governor. He’s not even cold yet. Let our nation grieve for someone who at times you might not have agreed with, but he served his country his entire adult life. Only selfish cowards don’t acknowledge that.
This is not about you people. It is about a great American who fought for us to be able to live in this country with all its freedoms.

Like the way people eulogizing FDR undoubtedly spoke favorably of his courage in uniting the country to take on hitler? Admittedly trump is no hitler. He's nowhere near as smart. But he's just as awful of a person, just without the skill to be particularly effective at much beyond grifting and stirring up hate and division.
All great leaders, and I would count McCain among them, have to take on fights for things they believe in. Are the thought police now telling us we shouldn't mention those fights when remembering them? At the end of the day funerals are for the living, not for the deceased. And those of us still alive have to keep fighting the fight that the deceased were involved in. Presumably that's what the deceased would want. Otherwise why did they bother doing anything in the first place?

I think McCain had pretty awful politics in his way and Trump is awful in many ways (oh even with him I'm not quite to "in every way", but having him as president is a net harm). Lots of thought police about yes.

There is a time and place for everything. At least a few days of mourning what John McCain was will not hurt anyone’s agenda

I love that he asked both Bush and Obama to give his eulogy. Still reaching across the aisle in death. I watched his interview on 60 minutes last night and it was really interesting. He forbid the orange one to attend. Following in Barbara Bush’s footsteps with that request.

Apparently it will hurt trump's agenda. He refused to issue a proclamation honoring McCain's death, so the White House flags are already back at full staff. So yeah, he's a turd and I'm glad McCain wasn't afraid to stand up to him.

He is jealous of McCain because he will never be a tenth of what John was . Such a low life.

Petty and silly, but his fans like that. It the big picture it doesnt really matter, but I dont have to like the President’s bahavior in this regard.

He gives turds a bad name. He's just unbelievably self-absorbed. I'm sure it's eating him up that McCain is getting so much attention. What a horrible human being he is.

Yeah, the AMVETs are blasting Trump for that. Rightfully so.

I guess McCain knew that with Obama and Bush speaking, the eulogies would at least mostly be about him. Trump would figure out a way to make it about himself.
Politics aside (I was no great fan of McCain) Trump clearly loathed McCain because he represented everything Trump would like to be but isn't. McCain was the scion of a venerable navy family, the military equivalent of old money. Trump is the son of a grubby, corrupt NYC real estate developer ("corrupt NYC real estate developer" is an oxymoron). McCain was generally respected even by those who didn't like his politics, while Trump knows full well that even those who share his political goals mostly hold him in contempt, especially the Republican "establishment."
You've got to hand it to Trump, though. Just when you think he couldn't be more small, petty, self-centered and petulant, he proves you wrong. The guy never disappoints.
He probably asked them to speak, just to avoid having Trump speak. I mean seriously..........why would anyone want Trump to speak at their memorial service? I wouldn't even accept a Medal of Honor from him. He's a scoundrel.

And if I remember correctly, did he say "no" or did he simply give a thumbs down in front of the Senate in that very dramatic appearance on the floor? Those who remember better than me may wish to correct me but what I remember is McCain's making the thumbs down gesture and then saying NO after this gesture was recorded as his response.
