View Full Version : Small goal

I have been “working” on fixing a wall in the basement (15 minutes now and then)

the goal is is to fix the wall, paint the wall, put up my doll shelf, and unpack my doll collection.

my mom is coming next weekend. She is the only person in my life who also appreciates the dolls.

i want to either have them out (unlikely) or have her help me put them out (fun.)

so, at least one more layer of mud - tonight

then tomorrow sand (mud or prime) and continue as far as I can each day.

anybody else have a goal this week?

anybody else have a goal this week?
Just to get through the weekend (!). Volunteer gig at the food bank (moving about 4-5,000 pounds of frozen meat in a couple of hours) and then a trip out of town to do a little bicycling with friends and then a trip back into town tonight because tomorrow I'm volunteering across town at 7 am for a radio station I support (staffing a phone for their big fundraiser), leaving that and going back across town for a short non-profit board meeting, and then a square dance that night at one of our clubs. Sunday will be spent recuperating. lol

It's unusual that I have this many events bundled across such a distance in so little time. I do wish I'd planned them a little better, but I didn't want to say 'no' to any of them, so here I am.

My goal in the next seven days is to complete Transplanting of all iris rhizomes. And then, start on moving lily bulbs.

Yes I was recently asked to do some part time case management of workers compensation clients in addition to teaching. I need to learn how to use the computer billing program. I know the actual job as I have done it before.

Since I had to put my dog down due to health issues that suddenly sprang up, I want to find some structure in my day and an exercise program to keep me organized and physically active until I find my new 4-legged friend. I knew my beloved dog was very important in my life but having the commitment to take care of him responsibly kept me organized and active and meeting people every day. Much harder to self-motivate every day.

I totally understand Razz. I can’t live without a dog. Even though I planned to downsize by natural attrition the breeder offered me Max’s half sister for free. She retired her from being a show dog and she is 3. Max is 1 1/2 and the other 2 dogs are 13 & 14. Back up to 4 but will eventually just have 2.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Razz. It is so hard to lose our furry family members!

I would like to complete my semi-annual closet clean-out and purge some more items in the process.

Sorry Razz. I'm getting new windows in the house this week. We're on day 3 and it's a complete mess. All inside/outside projects on hold and then I have to paint trim since we're switching to white windows (less expensive than the black ones I had). Then I have to decide what color to paint the house and studio. They have always been dark browns....do I want to go crazy and try a new color mix? Maybe greens or navy blue. Something different with the crisp white of the new windows??? Of course if I change colors I'd then need to consider new gutters and downspouts (currently brown). Then would my outdoor furniture go with a new color? See? I hate this one thing leads to another!

Float on...that one thing leads to another is why we kept the exact same room colors when we painted....but I'm wondering if you could find a dark color that would go with the brown gutters and look great with the new white...greens, teal, burgundy. Have fun with it.

Yard-work, moving brush to the curb where the city will come and chip it, putting things away for the winter. Columbus day I will plant garlic (Zemo and Killarney Red varieties). We are getting frequent rain showers, so I occasionally duck back inside, sit on the sunporch and read.

I'm sorry your companion died, Razz--it's so hard to lose one you love.

I made lunch: tomato beef curry. That may be it for the day.

Wow, a lot of people have a short term goal!

i didn’t get to the wall last night because dh wanted to go out to the local place for sandwiches and they had live music, and we ran into some people we know....

but i sanded and mudded this morning. Definitely need to mud most of it again - tomorrow morning if it’s ready to sand.

how is everyone else doing?

Taught myself the billing program yesterday and also did one client report. I am amazed at your skills CL. I have no clue how to do what you are doing.

Lol! What I am doing is entry level manual labor. My ten year old could do it (literally, when he was ten, he was doing this)

my mind is still boggling at learning a computer computer program in one day. Guess we all have different strengths.

How Am I doing? Well I dug 30+ Iris yesterday and will trim 10 of them and get them in the ground today. The other 20 need to be trimmed but they will travel to Hermann before they go in the ground. As usual I had more Irish than I thought I did I figured I had 10 more to go to Hermann but at least 20 need to be planted there and it is getting late to get them established.

CL, I have zero building/fixing skills. When I worked for the state and hit any kind of computer problem I would get my tech to do it. I call it conveniently stupid. Then when I retired and was asked to teach my college class I really wanted to do it but had no clue how to use the computer program to teach and grade. I spent countless hours figuring it out and it was hard for me. But I think this experience helped me to learn this other one. And after I got proficient with the college program you guessed it they changed to a new one. Again I was able to learn it fast because of my past experience.

I did complete the closet yesterday and got rid of a bunch of clothing. It's hard letting go of some of my work clothes that are really nice and fit well, especially since I have a hard time finding things that fit. I still have a lot of clothing, but this year I've got a net decrease of 24 clothing items, so I'm continuing to move in the right direction.
Today I cleaned out one little cabinet - it's the cabinet equivalent of a junk drawer, so it's a good little project that needs to be done periodically.

So sorry to hear about your pooch, Razz. Sometimes it's hard to realize all the ways they fit into our lives...

Iris lilies, good job on the irises!

and Rosa, you are already on your second project?! Wow.

i sanded and put another layer of mud on. I’m pretty sure this is the last mud unless I see any small dings I need to touch up. It should sand faster too because it is almost smooth already. So hopefully tomorrow will be sand, wipe down with a damp cloth, and prime. I need to check the barn for primer and paint.

So, I have primer and paint, but I didn’t make any progress yesterday. I made some different choices about how to use my time, which turned out to be poor choices.

i’m working on letting go of the self criticism and just holding on to the lesson for next time. (“This was a poor choice, do not choose it again.” Vs. “you made a(nother) bad decision.”)

Oh, I'm going to have to add to the small goal of painting. We just got new windows put in. I need to paint the trim (already primed) both outside and inside. That is something so hard to just get started. I found one interior door and trim around the front door where I never got around to painting them and it's been over 10 years since they were replaced. Oops.

Painting. Missed section. Yep.

I have 4 sections of iron fence to finish painting. I started that project about, oh, 15 years ago. The bare metal fence is ok but it is better if the surface is protected by paint. I finished two sections. Will do two more sections later.

I have a bag of 50 daffodils to plant.
I'm not sure how I'm going to do that through several layers of cardboard and mulch. I think I'll have to plant in bunches or I'll be digging for a week

I hate to clean our motor home so of course I let it go until today with us leaving tomorrow. It took me 2 hours to clean it and 3 to load it but it’s done.

Love reading about goals accomplished!

So far in finding new structure in my life, I am going on hour-long walks by myself. The first couple of times were hard but it is getting easier. I also walk the old rail trail with a friend a couple of times a week. Today I started on a modified Zumba exercise program that is available for free once a week and doable so will add that to the mix.
Tomorrow I will check out the swim programs at the local pool. I always said that when I moved to town, I would go swimming again but never did.

As I meet and talk to dog owners on my recent walks, I am finding that many are recommending smaller dogs. So far the only rescues available locally are German shepherds which are way too big for my house and too much for me to handle over the next 10+ years. The right little dog will come available through my dog contacts like the local boarding kennel that I used all the time, Humane Society, etc.

My mom was walking my brother's German Shepherd when it pulled to chase a squirrel. She broke her arm and several ribs.

We have an abundance of tiny dogs at the shelter here. I visit now and then (very dangerous!) and I want to bring them all home.

Congratulations on all the progress, everyone! you all are inspiring!
(see what you started, CL?! lol good job!)

CL, how big a job is it to set up your shelf? I'm kinda remembering it's a big shelf....

Teacher Terry
10-10-18, 9:04pm
Our big dog is 13 so perfect for us but we wouldn’t have another one. We prefer small dogs. Here the small dogs fly out of the shelter so fast they don’t even let volunteers walk them.

We are in beautiful Placerville California with perfect fall weather. I used to paint all the time and one of my least favorite jobs. Now I supervise DH.

Chicken lady

I don’ know how long the shelf will take - it’s modular but the pieces aren’t uniform, so it’s kind of complicated to get a version that works and uses all the pieces.

but if we set up the shelf together, that is fine too. (The shelf started out in mom’s kitchen)

the wall all looks good this morning. (I was a little afraid I would need to do a second coat of paint)

Good news about not needing more paint. My mom was way handier than my dad and could fix stuff that he could not.
