View Full Version : Something to hook to the wall without penetrating the wall?

Any suggestions? I am no Tim Taylor.

I want to hang a curtain dividing a room in two.

How heavy is the curtain? If it's fairly light you could consider 3M's Command Adhesive hangers (https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/All-3M-Products/?N=5002385+8711017+3294857497&Ntt=command+adhesive+hooks&rt=rs). If they're not, is the issue with not penetrating the wall a matter of not wanting to leave a hole that has to be filled or not being able to penetrate the wall itself (cinderblock, etc.)?

The weight of a bedsheet, more or less.

I don't have tools or skill for doing the construction. So I want something sticky but sturdy.

Would a shower/tension rod be feasible? If the walls are close enough for it to reach then I don't see why a tension rod wouldn't work.

Good idea!

The Command hooks hold maybe 5-10 pounds a piece, so they might work, and they'll come off without a mark (if you follow their directions for that). 3M makes a foam tape that's strong enough to attach fenders to semi-trucks, but removing that after a while might cause more damage than you want to fix.

The other alternate I thought of was something like picture-hanger wire of the appropriate weight, wrapped around screws that you could put into the wall (depending on what the wall is made of); hang the curtain from the wire. That way all you should need is a screwdriver.

Okay, so I am getting creative here. But here is the deal. I read, draw, and watching movies in bed. This is not good for my sleep hygiene.

So I was thinking I could have one futon on one side of the room for lounging -- reading, drawing, movies, etc. -- and then one futon on the other side of the room just for sleeping. And the curtain would separate them.

But another idea I had was to set up my tent. And then just sleep in the tent.

Does this sound crazy? I know. I know. Another thing that most any single woman would see and promptly turn tail and run!

Hunh. You were going to have TWO futons. TWO of them? When there is just one of you? This is accumulating stuff at a higher rate.

I’m just yanking your chain. It might be a good idea.

Well, I gave the couch to Harlan. So I feel like I can have two futons.

I need better sleep. I really do.

You're getting pretty close to my notion that your ideal woman would own a change of underwear and a spork and be OK with living in a yurt.

She sounds adventurous yet low-maintenance! I like it!

How long is the space you're trying to fill with a drape? Could you find a cheapish room divider?

I bet someone on Freecycle will have a folding screen you can get free of charge. Or you could check thrift shops.

Room divider?

Yeah.....it's like the folding screen that Jane and IL are talking about. they are usually in 3-4 sections with hinges. Just google it.

My daughter has one of those lightweight Indian tapestries as a room divider. She used three thumbtacks to hang it.

I don't think most landlords would object to that.

I suspect you are taking the idea of never doing anything but sleeping (and well maybe) in the bedroom a little too far. I know people say that but I've never taken it entirely literally (I read in my bedroom, talk on the phone in it as well, relax in it when I just want to stare at the walls). I don't think it's literally true. Of course if you stay up way past bedtime reading or watching movies or internet or (for most people it's the smart phone) then it's a bad habit I guess. If hanging stuff was to block light well that really disturbs sleep.

You could look into a room divider like this if it's kind of just about having two separate areas, they seem to come in all types of styles, sheer like this, solid etc.. I've used it around the bed (in one studio apt I lived in) but to block some of the light:

I was going to say "ixnay" on the tent idea but then it occurred to me that it would be a great way to very quickly filter out women who were not excellent candidates for a relationship. But it doesn't sound very comfortable to me anyway and I suspect that you would end up sharing the tent with Harlan if he couldn't see you in the room from the other futon ('course, this could happen anyway).

But if the "lounging" futon were left as a couch/sofa and the "sleeping" futon were left opened up as a bed, who would be the wiser? It wouldn't be much different from having a bedroom alcove or such in an efficiency apartment.

Could you just position your bed so you can't see the TV from there? Easy and free. Best would be to position the TV at the head of the bed, facing away from the bed.

I like the idea of thumbtacks holding a lightweight fabric to the ceiling.

If you like the idea of a folding screen, you could always make one if you can't find one easily. Or even just a couple of sheets of plywood and craft a base for them.

Lots of people use various Ikea bookcases as room dividers.
