Is there some way of getting the "Activity stream" here on an iPhone?

Your iPhone is probably defaulting to the site's Default Mobile Style, which is a stripped down version designed for small screens. The only way to see all the features available on the full site style is to change to that style. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click 'Full Site'.
