I have two that have accompanied me through most of my life. One is pedestrian, useful in a sort of nose to the grindstone way. The other is philosophical and more like a mantra for my life. It gets down to the real truth of living as far as I’m concerned.

Calvin Coolidge

”Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

I had that quote displayed prominently on my wall behind my work desk. Many a criminal sat down in front of me and failed to take that into consideration. The ones that challenged me learned about my persistence and determination the hard way.

Paul McCartney

”And in the end...the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Yeah, a “Beatle” is the source of my life’s mantra. Fitting.

I actually have a file on my computer called favorite quotes. Many are from movies and tv...

Ed, you're dealing with the demon of external validation. You can't beat external validation. You want to know why. Because it feels sooo good. (The Green Man to Ed, Northern Exposure).

Associate yourself with men of good quality...for 'tis better to be alone than with bad company. (George Washington)

The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf. (Will Rogers)

In the end there were no simple answers. No heroes. No villains. Only silence. (from the movie, Never Cry Wolf)

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read. (Groucho Marx)

Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask...We are willing to help Lord, but what, if anything is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding. (a sermon from A River Runs Through It).

Besides the ones below in all my posts, I recently re-discovered this - supposedly Einstein's Theory of Happiness: A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.

Also this, by Harvey Specter. Don't know who he is, but like the thought:

Ever loved someone so much, you would do anything for them? Yeah, well, make that someone yourself and do whatever the hell you want.

Also this, by Harvey Specter. Don't know who he is, but like the thought:

Ever loved someone so much, you would do anything for them? Yeah, well, make that someone yourself and do whatever the hell you want.

On the subject of loving ourselves and others, here are two:

"Self-hatred is also the hatred of God, because God and ourselves are united." —Thomas Keating

"Love [people] even in [their] sin, for that is the semblance of Divine Love and is the highest love on earth. Love all God’s creation, the whole and every grain of sand in it. Love every leaf, every ray of God’s light. Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you have perceived it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love." —Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov [1]

But my all time favorite "love" quote is from MLK's speech The Drum Major Instinct. I taught it to my kids, and my son included it in his valedictory speech when he graduated from college.

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s Theory of Relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

David Letterman: “What is that thing you get from eating raw meat?”
Julia Child: “Health.” --from a segment on the preparation of steak tartare

"Who do you think made the first stone spear? That wasn't the yakkity yaks sitting around the campfire. It was some Asperger sitting in the back of a cave figuring out how to chip rocks into spearheads." –Temple Grandin

“Never blend in.” –Harvey Milk

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many... Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders... But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." --Buddha

Good manners is the art of making those people easy with whom we converse. Whoever makes the fewest persons uneasy is the best bred in the company. –Jonathan Swift

“I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to BE alive is a grand thing.”--Agatha Christie

"Fear is the parent of cruelty." - James Anthony Froude

“Smiles, at least in human society, are gestures of submission and routinely demanded of women as a token of subordinate status. The happy slave smiles; the well-trained “lady” smiles; now even the male white-collar striver has to keep his lips pulled back in an expression of eager compliance. Only the top guys get to snarl and snap their way through the day.”—Barbara Ehrenreich, in This Land is Their Land

Drug companies have to stop making up diseases. I don't know what the the terrorists are planning next for America but if I had every problem they talk about in medicine commercials: breathing, lifting, walking, sitting, sleeping, crapping, not crapping I would welcome death. I don't know where it came from, but I have always liked "let the mystery be." I take that to mean that everything we believe is a story (religion, politics, culture) we have concocted to make sense of life and that bewilderment is actually a freeing state of mind.
With my ongoing nostalgia for home, this one - " sometimes the best way to get to a better place is to make the place you are just a little bit better."

“Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains ... an unuprooted small corner of evil.

Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.”
― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956
