It's been crazy busy recently and I have not been here for awhile. Just wanted to stop by and say Happy Thanksgiving. Wishing one and all a great holiday.

Hang in there UA! I am starting the day with a meditation at the local Shambhala center.

I am thankful that there will be 4 of us and half are veggie eaters (getting some turkey for my daughter) I am making one dish of brown rice, faro and lentils plus a side of red chard.

Last year we bought our turkey with all the sides from Smith’s and it was easy with just heating everything up. This year none of our 5 kids are around so we are going to a movie and dinner out.

What's really cool is that it is slightly chilly and overcast today in Phoenix......it's almost like Phoenix is trying to be Holiday-like this Thanksgiving. I am able to wear a long sleeve heavy sweatshirt today and it feels very much like that ten week period of time we get most years between Thanksgiving and the second week in February where we experience what passes for Winter here. It's disheartening to realize that so many of our holidays are built on shaky ground, but I recognize Thanksgiving as a harvest festival and an opportunity to be thankful (formally) for what is good in life.

bae, loved the article. I focus on squash as a main dish, and usually put a turkey on in some form. I also make our one recipe that has been handed down with a pumpkin filling. I don't focus on the BS story since I know a lot of the real history.

Sure.

It WOULD be interesting to have a Thanksgiving dinner devoted to foods we have gathered ourselves.

We do not hunt, so we would have to buy the wild-caught turkey or quail, or perhaps we would butcher a chicken. But the rest of it would be put together from our own harvest, things like:


A tomato soup from frozen garden tomatoes, garnished with a bit of fresh tomato picked two weeks ago.

A squash dressing for the bird from a bland squash, onions, garlic we have grown. Or maybe an apple dressing?

I still have a sack of fresh green beans in the fridge, so they would be on our table.

We hsve 8 peacans from our pecan trees. Haha, it is hard to come up with a way to use just those few.

If we could use foods from my father in law’s place we would have a sweet corn casserole.

We do not grow any grain, so I am at a loss how to make a dessert without using flour we have purchased.

we have pounds and pounds of apples. We used up all of the pears, but if
I knew a thsnksgiving harvestbdinner was planned I would save them in the future.

It's so easy here to use local ingredients, either purchased from neighbors or gathered yourself, that it's like cheating, so it's no huge sacrifice. In some ways it is easier than trying to source traditional Thanksgiving ingredients, which mostly have to be brought in by boat.

I *could* have a wild turkey, heck I could probably go out right this moment and be back in within an hour with a turkey, or at least a couple of pheasant, but we're going with salmon, halibut, and some lamb.

Local food here would include one of the geese that abound in Central Park and the other parks in Denver. I was stopped for an elk crossing on Sunday 2 times just going into the foothills. However you are not supposed to shoot them. I just stick to the healthiest versions of what people actually like (so no jellied cranberries thank you). I do have greens, just not from my garden.

A couple years I have made a pie from a pumpkin. One year I even grew the pumpkin! Note, do NOT use the jack o lantern type!

I am really glad not to be cooking this year. I have been busy with grading finals and seeing a few clients. We just got our first rain in about 4 months. Snowing in the mountains. I have 2 months off from teaching and will host Xmas and by then I will feel like entertaining. Hope everyone has a great day!

A couple of years ago someone drpped off a domestic duck in our park, a place where we feed swans and host wild ducks. The duckie would become a victim of dogs. DH and a friend plotted to capture the duck, kill it, and serve it for dinner. But some do-gooder got to the duck first and deposited duck with friends on a farm where duck would not be eaten. So thst was a happy ending, and I was relieved that our city homestead would not be the site of a duck murder, although
I sgreed with the plan.

We regularly have wildlife dropped off in our park – once was an alligator, a snapping turtle, and always pet ducks.

We found out that the Sizzler by our house was offering a traditional Thanksgiving meal so we went to check it out. It was actually really good. For $17 we got a big plate with turkey breast, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green beans, sweet potato with maple butter and also fresh yummy rolls and pumpkin pie. The green beans were especially nice and fresh, just steamed without anything put on them. The turkey breast was a bit dry, but skinless breast is always dry to me. The gravy and cranberry sauce rescued it. The meal was so filling that we took the pie to go and more than five hours later we still feel really full and haven't had our pie yet.

We are so grateful for the rain that we got yesterday and the first clear and beautiful day we've had in over two weeks (fire smoke). The sky was blue with big puffy clouds, the air was so clean and fresh, and it was a pleasure to be out. We started the morning with a long walk with the dogs, who hadn't been walked in over a week. After the early lunch at Sizzler we spent the rest of the day outside puttering in the garden and playing with the dogs. So wonderful. And so missed.

My take is that food is just a garnish to put on the top of friends and family or the many other other things we value. Good holiday to all and thanks.
