like an extra long time? Last night I apparently slept over 10 hours. Also I have had over my baseline of 7 hours for over 2 weeks, sometimes 8 hours or more. Between medications and personality I have always done better sleeping longer, however it is drilled into my that it is too much. I was raised to get up by a certain time no matter what, and my work hours start very early many days. I guess it just feels weird to sleep that much without having something wrong.

I think your body takes what it needs. Many times working through the week leaves you sleep-deprived, and on the weekends, you just play catch-up. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Sleep is VERY important for restoring the body in many ways, so listen to your body and just go along with it!

Restorative sleep is not an indulgence. You're an adult now; you can turn off the voices in your head.

And to answer your question: no.

No, but ...

They say if you sleep later on weekends it throws off your sleep schedule and it will be harder to sleep at normal hours (whatever those are for you, I'm not an early bird and this job doesn't require me to be). I've found that to be true. So in the name of sleep hygiene, I generally don't try to sleep later on weekends and sometimes set the alarm. Occasionally I will sleep later.

Truthfully my body kind of wakes me up before then usually anyway, as I'm used to getting up at a certain time.

No. I usually sleep 7 hours going to bed at 10pm and waking around 5am without an alarm. About once a month, I won't wake til after 6 or later. I suppose I considered that just normal extra sleep that I needed.

I understand exactly what you are talking about. I feel bad that I can’t stay up “late” and spend time with my dh (although he has never once expressed remorse for not getting up to do stuff with me at 5 a.m.) I resent that my body NEEDS 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night. And in spite of years of evidence to the contrary, I feel like I should be able to will it to get by on 6 or less and treat my inability to do so as a moral failing.

even though intellectually I know that I need a perfectly reasonable amount of sleep and the healthy, responsible thing to do is make sure I get it.

I chose to work off-shift for most of my career because I had memories of my poor father occasionally waking me up at some ungodly hour while getting ready for work, and I think I made a decision that was never happening to me. Now I generally wake up at "some ungodly hour" myself. But it's my choice to do so--I can sleep whenever I want, including naps, and 5-6 AM works for me. I can't imagine conflating sleep with morality.

That's certainly nothing to feel bad about. Different people require different amounts of sleep, and it also changes over time depending on age, current health, how physical your job is, mental/emotional state, and even the season of the year and your level of exposure to sunlight. If I briefly require more sleep, I figure it probably means I am very successfully fighting off a cold or something, and my body needs to save energy for that endeavor.

I personally don't like to miss the early morning hours - it does not feel good to me to get a late start on the day - so if I find myself sleeping too late I go to bed earlier for a few nights. For example if your usual seven hours is between 11 and 6 but you suddenly slept in until 9 and that bothered you, I would go to bed at 8pm, making time for the full ten hours before getting up at the usual time. I usually find that doing that for a couple of nights gives me the extra rest I need and resets my internal clock, without falling in to the annoying habit of sleeping late in the mornings. Oh, and I don't stress it if I can't fall asleep right away at the earlier bedtime, it is hours of optional sleep that count here, which your body will use if they are really needed.

I just slept 11 hours last night. 8:30 til 7:30. Once in a while that happens and I feel very happy about it! Not an ounce of guilt. That’s what weekends are for.

Do I feel bad? Sometimes, but that is because life goes on and I feel I was getting further behind (last year when I was working 80 hours a week to keep the place open, due to an owners surgery and being off months).

Doesn't mean my body didn't need the sleep.

No. I would hibernate all winter if I could.

For about a week after I broke my wrist I was taking a nap every day which is something I never do but I was exhausted.

I feel bad for NOT sleeping. :~) I have a sleep disorder and use a cpap......but I still often can only sleep for 5-6 hours and no naps. (even though I would be able to sleep as long as I wanted).
Everyone else in my family could sleep for 10 hours easily and even take naps! . I'm envious!

I went to bed last night at 8pm and woke at 0453. I was ecstatic!

I find I often sleep longer in the winter. I think it's part of being fairly tuned in to nature, long nights are for sleeping, if not for hibernating.

And when I was still working and couldn't sleep longer, I often got really sick in the winter. I've been retired for 2 years and 8 months now, and have not been sick at all.
