I am old, and after decades of observing skin care lotion I am putting them into three categories:

One. Greasy

Two. Watery

Three. The right kind which is like Vaseline intensive care

My friend who moved sold Avon 10 years ago. She had tons of the stuff, easily 50 pounds of it. I health crap tons of at home as well as giving away many of the other products cause I use little of that stuff. I am not relishing the idea of using all of this lotion and I don’t especially like because there’s only a few tubes of the right kind.

I also learned in this cleanup of cosmetic lotion stuff that there’s a special requirements for your hands which is a different requirement for your face which is a different requirement for general lotion. To me this is all bs, lotion is lotion. Are use it because my skin gets dry and uncomfortable during the winter but not so much during the summer.

My SIL was into selling Melaleuca for a while and as a result I had bottles and bottles of skin lotion. One of it was really good, but it was only for when you needed ultra-moisturizing properties, so it would have taken me decades to use up one bottle, never mind the 6 I had lined up in the closet.

I'm not a skin lotion person anyway. I know that in hotels you always get "body lotion" as an amenity, but I never use it. I've never felt the need to lotion up my hands or legs or arms, unless I'm using a nice perfumed lotion after a shower. Maybe I don't have dry skin, or maybe I'm not bothered by it.

I do think the wrong lotion for your face can clog pores, but other than that, I agree with you that lotion is lotion.

Well, I am a user of Cetaphyl lotion after washing with Cetaphyl gentle cleanser and my skin has received many compliments over the years.

Before anyone jumps up and tells me all the reasons that I should not use Cetaphyl or I should use Brand X,Y, or Z instead, I have tried many products and my present regime works well for me.

I find that I need moisturizer on my face before going to the public pool each morning as the chemicals are very drying and reapply after my shower there. I do need moisturizer at night for my face, hands and fingernails and for my feet at bedtime. DD2 gave me some of her aromatherapy creations which are somewhat oily but very soothing; I love her homemade moisturizing soaps.

When I was in AZ for a week with very low humidity, my skin got very dry so I used more moisturizer than usual.

That said, I find a simple product that consistently works best for me and leave all the rest alone. I have no idea what I would do with all the products that you have been given, IL.

Women's shelters often accept donations of toiletries.

I do use moisturizer on my face, and a number of other facial skin care products, one reason being my DD works for a high end cosmetics company and she gives it to me for free. Plus at night I put ROC on because it's supposed to be a good OTC retinol product.

I use Burt's Bees on my face and Cetaphil on the rest of me. It's very dry in the west and it is needed to not look like a Croc!

I came to lotions and moisturizers late in life. After retiring, I became aware that I usually looked stern and put-offish, but after developing a daily lotion routine my appearance evolved into the warm, friendly and inviting image below. (Today is April 1st isn't it?)

I kind of like a product called Everyone 3 in 1 Lotion (hands, face and body) as it seems to work for all. I get the unscented since I don't like smelly stuff. I also steer clear of products containing Dimethicone when possible (or at least way down on the list); the thought of smearing silicone on my skin doesn't appeal. It seems that every kind of skincare product now has that in it.

I use gold bond for everything but my face. With asthma I cannot have any fragrances.

I use Cerave face lotion as well as their "general" hand cream. I'd say it's the best stuff I've ever used!

I realize this is only lotion adjacent, but personally I only use a little vaseline on my lips. No lotion anywhere else. My mother swore by some greasy hand cream thing but I just don't feel that I have the need. My dad thought hers was an addiction that she was succumbing to in a futile effort to keep her skin soft.

And Alan, keep it up. it's obviously working... :~)

This is the product I have been using for the past several months. I have very dry skin and have used a moisturizer on my face since my 20s I guess, and for many, many years I have used hand/body lotions daily. So in my purse or tote bag there is always a lip balm and a small tube of hand lotion. I have dry skin all year long, but in Winter it can get really dry and itchy. Always on the outlook for a good body lotion I found Eveyone 3 in 1, and like Pinkytoe I kind of like it.

I make my own lotions (of course ;)). For face its a combination of Aloe gel, Vitamin E and frankicense. For everywhere else its lotion bars made from equal parts shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax. Lotion bars are too greasy for my face.

Herbgeek, DH and I were going on a meander a couple of weeks ago, and a mere 10 miles from our house we discovered this fabulous lavender/alpaca farm!! She had a little gift shop and I felt compelled to buy something to support her business, so I got a lavender/oatmeal bar of soap, which is awesome! (Just for the record, this was in New Jersey, not Vermont, in case people would be surprised to hear that NJ would have such things as a small scale family-owned lavender farm.)

Do you ever make things from lavender? We have a lavender bush that is out of control in a particular place in our yard where you would least expect anything to grow (on a thin base of potting soil over concrete in full sun).

I don't really use lavender in products, just the oil. Lavender goes into things like sleep pillows. Its too chunky for cosmetics.

Glad you clarified that this was in NJ, because I was going to put this on my list of things to do next time I visit my brother (in Isle La Motte).

Well, PM me if you're ever in Isle LaMotte. We're "just down the road apiece."

Heh, not to sound all stalker-ish but when you'd posted the listing for your VT house, I did look it up on google maps and see where it was in relation to the main road for just that purpose. :D

I try not to use anything on my skin. Other than washing my hands - I found that soap on my face put me in a vicious cycle. Soap cut through the natural oils in my skin, making it dry so my oil grands would go into hyper mode and my face would get very oily. After I stopped using soap and just water and a wash rag, I don't have near the issues. My skin feels more in balance.

My skin doesn't fair very well out here in the dry air, especially in winter. I've used Kiss My Face products almost exclusively as a somewhat affordable natural product. I have used their sunscreen, shaving lotion, soap and regular lotion. My eyes are irritated by most lotions that I've used n my face and theirs seemed to be least irritating. Unfortunately they recently went out of business or were bought out and my stores don't stock their products, so I'm trying a few new ones.

At a time I made soap for a small extra income and sold to a few little cottage businesses. One of the basics I learned is that most common grocery store type soaps have tallowate, which is what you get when you combine lye with animal fat (i.e. tallow). It's probably totally fine to use, but I've never been comfortable thinking of rubbing a rendered by-product of animal processing onto my skin and face.

Yeah, I cut down my face washing regimen similarly. The hot water takes FOREVER to get from the basement to the 2nd floor, and I hate wasting the cold water that flows while I'm waiting, so now I take a cheap, thin washcloth, dip it in the cold water, warm it in my hands for a few seconds and then just wash my face with it. No soap. I do follow up with a moisturizer, though.

Like Greg, for most of my life my face washing has been a matter of wiping it with the damp paper towel after i wash my hands in the restroom at work. My face is neither greasy or dry so I’ll stick with that routine until it stops working.

This reminds me of my college roommate. He started using one of those alcohol based face liquids. Loved how ‘clean’ it made his skin feel. A few days later he had to start using lotion on his face because his skin was dry and flaky. I had to point out the relationship and suggest that he quit using both.

Rogar, for decades I used Kiss My Face for the same reason: It was the least irritating to my eyes.

If you are successful in your search for a new product, will you post your results? Kiss My Face lotion is still available and isn't irritating, but it's heavier than the face moisturizer was.
