View Full Version : Roller coasters - do you ride them?
When Canada's Wonderland advertised its newest coaster experience, I shook my head - not for me. When I was 16 and attended the Exhibition in Toronto, I had a really bad experience and never rode that sort of a ride again.
It was fun to see this video of the newest ride though.

LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coasters:cool: even at 58!
NOPE. Don't even like amusement parks. I take the woods any day, any time.
No, I'm definitely past the roller coaster phase. Don't find them fun at all. I remember riding the Wild Mouse at Playland, Rye Beach, when I was a little girl and being totally freaked out. I went on a few roller coasters since, but they're not my kind of thrill.
At about age 8 , my dad and older sister convinced me to ride the Wild Mouse at Kennywood Park in Pgh. Front seat. I was terrified and didn't go on one again until I was in my 30s and at Disneyland. Figuring with the new shoulder straps and in the dark and it was, after all, Disney I felt secure to try it. I enjoyed it, then went on to ride one at Six Flags, one at Busch Gardens and now I'm done, but for a while there I could see the attraction.

Yeah, I like the Disney rides. One funny story (could have ended badly, actually) was when my MIL/BIL went to Disney, and decided to go on Space Mountain. They thought it was going to be like a planetarium ride like something you'd see at the World's Fair--a nice slow trip through a narrated space show. My MIL was close to 80 at the time. I'm surprised the workers didn't ask her about her heart or her fitness, but she had a completely surprising and unexpected ride.
I've had experience with both the Mad Mouse and Space Mountain. I liked the Mad Mouse so much I went back for more. The Space Mountain ride left me basically flat on the floor of the car with my eyes squeezed shut. Perhaps I could have done without the psychedelics. At any rate, my coaster days are well behind me.
I remember Wild Mouse. Wonder if any are still around. I rode the one at Lake of the Ozarks. It was removed in early '90's. Love coasters but haven't ridden any in a few years.

I had a bad ride at 5 on a children roller coaster and that was it for me. I took my kids to a amusement park every summer for a day and loved to ride most of the rides. Then in my 30’s they started to make me sick.
I love roller coasters but haven't ridden one in a few years. That's got nothing to do with the coasters, it has everything to do with amusement parks where coasters might be found. The hustle/bustle and long lines ruin the experience for me.
My parents were always terrified if we went somewhere with a coaster. I finally got them to tell me the story about when they dated and went on a wooden coaster that was falling apart!

When I was a kid I enjoyed the big roller coasters with hills, big hills! those were fun. I thought the Wild Mouse was stupid I hated it Because all it did was jerk you around the sharp corners if I remember right they were very few hills and they were small on the Wild Mouse.
Now I don’t go on roller coasters I have no interest and I don’t even go to places that have roller coasters.
Every chance I get!! I'm a member of ACE (American Coaster Enthusiasts), GOCC (Great Ohio Coaster Club) and DAFE (Dark Attraction and Funhouse Enthusiasts), and both DH and I love amusement parks, especially the non-chain ones (Knoebels, Waldameer, etc.). He won't go anywhere near the coasters but loves bumper cars, carousels, haunted houses and trains.
razz -- You're talking about Yukon Striker at Canada's Wonderland. I'm hoping to go there in September to ride it. I've ridden other dive coasters, this one is just bigger.
nswef -- When did you ride a Wild Mouse at Kennywood? I don't remember one being there and I've lived in Pittsburgh all of my life (but we always went to the late West View Park). I was just at KW last weekend for opening day. Look up the new coaster they're building (Steel Curtain). It's a doozy and will break several records, including 9 inversions, one of which is 197 feet above ground!
Float On -- Yes, there are still Wild Mouse coasters, a lot of them also spin. Look up Crazy Mouse at Del Grosso's Park. Kennywood has pretty much the same coaster but it's in a dark building, themed as a rat going through a sewer (The Exterminator). The track is painted black and the only lights are a few strobe lights -- very disorienting and you can't watch the ride so the spinning catches first-time riders by surprise.
Gardnr -- I'm older than you (I can't believe I'll be 60 in December) and I refuse to grow up!
And if you want to see a really unique coaster, look up Time Traveler at Silver Dollar City in Branson. I got to ride it last May.
We were just at our favorite park (Knoebels) two weeks ago for opening weekend. The front seat of Phoenix is the best seat in the entire park!
I believe I posted on here 4 years ago about my trip to England with ACE - 14 parks in 11 days, and a stop at Stonehenge. It was marvelous!
So, to follow up on my last post, I rode the new Steel Curtain at Kennywood today. It opens to the public tomorrow but I was invited to today's media preview event. I had to be at the park by 6:00 a.m. and
rode it several times, the first time at 7:15 a.m., including one ride in the front seat. It is incredible! A very comfortable ride, very smooth, very re-rideable, and I liked it much more than I thought I would. The inversions were quite smooth, which is not always the case on these types of rides. Here's a front seat POV: https://tinyurl.com/SteelCurtainPOV
I still love wooden coasters more but this one (along with Phantom's Revenge at the same park) are acceptable too. :-)

Cool video! I think I'll stick with the virtual experience though. I haven't been on a roller coaster for a very long time, but I recall that I got thrown around and battered a bit because I am pretty small.

Have not been on one in about 10-15 years. There's a very nice amusement park not too far from our home. However, I'm not really a coaster person. More of a carousel person!
For years I had a bizarre dream that I was on coaster, and as soon as we got to the top of the "big hill" I woke up. Or, most of the dream was spent trying to decide whether or not to go on the coaster.
Thanks, Alan -- I don't know how I managed to mess up the tinyurl. That wasn't my video (cameras and phones are strictly forbidden) but several cameras were temporarily put on the train for the media.
That was a fun video--that anticipation as the cars clink-clink-clink up that first ramp is classic! Then it looks like you can't see what's beyond that first hill, so that's another thrill. However, I'm past the desire to pursue that type of thrill-seeking. Looked like fun, though!
This is the first one I ever rode:

I love'em.
However, nowadays many of the rides make my body hurt. And I don't care for the ones where you go upside down.

The last one I ever rode was in Las Vegas in the mid 90's at Circus Circus. I don't care much for roller coasters - like that famous one in Ohio - or is it Texas, with the world's most dramatic and deepest drop? That would terrify me and I know better than to climb on board to begin with.
This one, though, was very mild and tame in comparison. I managed to get an all day pass for a deeply discounted rate by watching some CBS programming at CBS Television City at the MGM Grande which knocked my all day pass down by half in price. And over and over and over I rode this thing until I really wasn't feeling to hot and had to stop.
Glad I did it so I can say I did but it's not something I seek out. I feel much more alive and alert at a protest, for example. Rob

I remember riding a kids one (tiny thing that doesn't really go high or low) and liking that. However I do not like the feeling I remember gettinog, when being driven over hills (where your stomach stays above and outside you), and get enough ups and downs, dealing with people. Life is roller coaster enough.
And now I have this song going through my head:

Love them - I like the ones like Batman at Six Flags over Texas where your legs hang down.

Happy Roller Coaster Day!
Here's an article celebrating this important holiday with a list of the best roller coasters in the US (actually, razz, one in Ontario is on the list).
I'd rather get my thrills wondering if my tomatoes are going to be ripe by the weekend, but that's just me.

The first roller coaster I ever rode was Galaxy in Asbury Park. I went and looked it up and apparently it was gone by the 80's. The Casino was a weird and haunted place in the 70's.
My favorite roller coaster is Space Mountain at Disney world.
