I am abandoning my 10 year old iris garden in the city, my big one, the one I lease from the City of St. Louis for $1 a year. I am moving iris plants to our acre in Hermann. I still have two iris gardens in the city—one where I live, the other in our community garden’s perennial border.

Here is the big iris garden in its glory days:

Woah.. the City is going to miss you and your irises. But their loss is Hermann's gain.

A few days ago I put in 2 beds of Siberian Iris bulbs in my back yard.

I can’t grow Siberians for some reason. I put in a few varieties 4 years ago and only one survived. Well I do grow Caesar’s Brother, but anybody can grow that it’s like a weed.

Is this a building lot that will now be sold by the city or a quirky lot that is not readily sold and will turn to weeds?

This is a large corner lot that the city owns and is holding for eventual construction. They would not sell it to me because it is a prime building lot.

Honestly, it is probably good timing because I am moving my plants to Hermann and it is my guess that a builder will be grabbing this land to build on because new houses are going up on the street. It is a very good thing for this neighborhood and is a good thing for our houses that are right next to it.

We have two tiny old houses that are not habitable next to this big vacant iris garden.

Very pretty. I noticed the other day that one of our library branches has a memorial iris garden. So many colors and each dedicated to someone who has passed away.
