View Full Version : New Job!
Several months ago a competitor reached out to me about a potential job opportunity. It seemed like a great opportunity (I reached out to a number of industry contacts and got nothing but great feedback about both the company and my new boss) and a chance to escape some of the downsides of working for a mega-corp. Finally last week they made a generous offer, and yesterday I was informed that I passed the background check. So I gave 2 weeks notice to my now former employer. As is the custom in my industry, and others I imagine, my final day was today. Or more precisely my final 2 hours were this morning, less than 24 hours after I'd submitted my resignation.
Now I have 2 1/2 weeks of no commitments before my June 17th start date at my new job and a paycheck for 2 weeks plus 21.5 accrued PTO days hitting my bank account in a week. An unimaginable luxury which I've never experienced before. I've been piecing together a relatively unstructured road trip all afternoon. First stop, The Cat House on the Kings, a massive no kill cat sanctuary in the central valley that a dear friend has supported for many years. (he's driving up from LA to meet me there. And he bought the value pack of kitty treats at Costco tonight so all the cats are going to love us!) After that, who knows... I'm afraid the hard part of this whole adventure will be coming home in time to be at work on the 17th.

SoYou are going to go play with a complex full of cats? That would be fun.
Then I guess you can come back here and spend a lot of time on this website harassing us Republicans.

Pretty kuch. Hopefully there will be enough time between going to play with the homeless kitties and my return home that our cats don’t figure out that i was cheating on them!
I love animal sanctuaries. It's nice getting a break from humans. Enjoy!

Enjoy the YOU time......amazing to me how employers will fire your quickly if you have the gall to put in your two weeks notice these days......glad you have money put away so that this is no crisis for you but a thing of relaxation and fun. Best wishes with the new job, btw, jp1. Rob
Honestly it makes sense that an insurance company would send someone home after they give notice. A devious underwriter could inflict harm in the millions of dollars. Even if I stayed technically within my authority, and thus protected in the event that they sued me I could still put stupid policies on the books. I had authority to quote policies with $10M limits. It's a lot cheaper to pay me for two weeks of not being there. And frankly I'd rather be doing other things during these two weeks! Like going to the Marin headlands for a hike this morning since they are way to crowded on weekends.

Now that you have it makes sense that they did send you home.....and savvy you knew this was coming and had money put away for it so that it's a thing of relaxation and honoring YOU. What an advertisement for living simpler this is right here, seriously! Rob
PS Just came back and reread your op and I see that you have money still to come in from Employer A. Way to go, you really handled this well in all ways that I can see. It's like everyone's dream situation in leaving a job.
congrats and enjoy your time off! I recently left my job of 14 years and same thing. Gave 2 weeks notice was out as soon as I turned in a list and description of how to do my jobs with a comp package. Anything you deal with confidential info or have access to money... its out the door they want you to go.

Float, did you find a new job of just taking a break?
It’s so different in healthcare. We expect them to work right up until the last day of their notice, and if they leave without adequate notice we make a note in their file in case they want to come back because it’s a bad sign.
That makes sense with healthcare. Hopefully no one working in healthcare is going to act out against their soon to be former employer. The victim, in that case, would be an innocent bystander. As a commercial insurance underwriter my decisions/actions don't potentially cause physical harm, just financial harm to my employer. No one has ever died because of a data breach (at least as far as I know), but insurance companies have certainly had to pay for the costs related to them. I've seen plenty of bad risks come across my desk that I politely declined to quote or quoted with terms appropriate to the exposure. If I were an angry, soon to be former, employee it'd be easy to just drop my price for a bad risk and put one on the books as a "parting gift". Hence the reason that insurance underwriters are almost always "walked" when they quit.
Instead, however, I'm a happy former employee with a 2 week paid vacation before I start my new job!
Enjoy your free time and good wishes in your new work setting.

I was in leadership when I gave notice. I was leaving to build and start up a competitor facility. I was shocked to not be escorted to my car. Man oh man I wanted that 30d off before starting my new job! I was so mad.
Congrats on the new job.
When I decided to quit working just before I turned 50, the owner of the company asked if I would stay on for 6 more months to help transition my replacement. I agreed if I only would work from 8-12, no nights or weekends. I knew who was going to take my job, he had worked for me for several years. He really did not need any help from me, I was just there in case a problem came up or make introductions.
I liked that job, I would kill time on the internet and then go out to lunch, then had a standing 1:30 tee time.
