I know some people claim to be threatened and offended by the flag, the anthem and even the idea of America. Sneakers with flag logos require censoring. We are invited to make 7/4 a day of bleak reflection on past sins.
I am not one of those people. I plan to take advantage of the veterans discount at the liquor store to toast this country in all it’s warts-and-all glory.

I think this is more about publicity and driving people to either buy the products to "destroy them", or to try to buy them because of the recall. Once distracted by this stuff, no one is going to ask why a US flag, on a shoe sold around the USA on the fourth of July, isn't made by and in America, but instead by child labor in a third world country.
What is that old saying about no such thing as bad publicity?
I am concerned a bit that this year Independence Day seems to being recast as "Support The Troops" Day.

I think that there are lots of other people out there protecting our freedoms besides soldiers. I think soldiers can protect our nation from overthrow by another nation. Which I am happy about. I would not want Russians taking over, for instance.
But I think that journalists, ACLU lawyers, protesters, various elected officials, private citizens who petition the government for redress, etc. all help the cause of our independence.
I also like the 4th of July because I despise royalty.

And I LOVE royalty! I am watching for the second time The Crown. But I do not want to pay for it all, that is fine for citizens of the U.K.

Happy Fourth! We are enjoying "Italian Margaritas" that are made in NH. Very yummy! I have some vintage sparklers to light if we am able to stay awake until dark. :)

My take is that if you wish to fly the American flag, it's your right to do so and it's not my place to say anything, judge, or give grief. I will admit not everyone I know shares this belief with me but my take is - it's fine if someone wants to fly the US flag on July 4th (I've even promised and would follow through with putting the US flag up in my yard if Trump were impeached)...........as long as said someone is OK with my flying the Mexican flag on July 4th out of embarrassment for Donald Trump's recent tariff threat to America's largest trading partner as of April 2019....also due to my gratitude for Mexico always being there for me with affordable medical and optical and dental care.
I'm a big believer in patriotic displays of gratitude, and were access to the above affordable in the US......I'd be a lot more likely to fly the US flag. Rob

I'm glad you won't judge me for displaying my American flag on the holiday commemorating this country's Declaration of Independence from Britain, although I think it's in bad taste to use that holiday as an excuse to display another country's flag. That and your post serves to illustrate why I am a liberal and likely always will be as long as I remain in the US.
To sum it up, did I not state that I don't judge or give grief and that I believe you are free to fly the US flag is you wish? Go for it, as far as I am concerned you have that right and I don't judge. Alles klar?
My take is that I deserve the same respect in return, regardless of whether or not you understand my take or my motivation(s). It is not disrespectful where I live to fly a Mexican flag, given the reasons I have listed above, which are unfortunately true and real and will not go away by flying a US flag on your property. Ouch too on your bastardization comment - If we hadn't had this back and forth for some years now I'd be very offended but as much as you can predict my takes on various issues at this point I can predict yours. And I do believe you are sincere in your beliefs and I do believe you mean well overall......Were I an MD I'd recommend a month sabbatical to the 85006 or a similar US inner city neighborhood - so you can see the realities faced TODAY and not when you struggled before in that very different economy when we were both much younger.

Vets upon return, especially ones that have acquired PTSD during their service (a gift that just keeps on giving) face poor treatment and lack of support upon their return. Personally, I agree with bae. Support the Troops - and veterans! - every day! July 4th is Independence Day.

The Poles didn’t get their freedom until the 1980’s and the mayor of Warsaw is openly defying the president and encouraging others to do so. It’s weird that the world has some horrible people in charge all at the same time.

I think royalty would be much more mentally healthy than what we have going on now. Let people project all their hero worship and obsession on to royalty and let the heads of state be more boring and do actual governing. Royalty would have almost earned their unearned wealth for that service alone at that point.

Yikes. Just noticed that everyone on our block has a flag (and some have multiples) waving....except for us. Our house came with a monstrous telescoping flagpole which we took down. I imagine neighbors think we are anti-patriotic - truth is that a flag of any sort just seems like one more thing to keep up with.

My comment was just a tweak of the current mode of discourse in the U.S., in which it seems one cannot fully "support the troops" if one is opposed to parading materiel down main drags of Washington, D.C. during celebrations of independence, or if one prefers to try time-honored tools like diplomacy and treaties with enemies rather than issuing half-baked jingoistic bombast through social media platforms, or if one dares to question the expenditure of blood and treasure on programs that starve the rest of the economy.
It is entirely possible to support the bravery and efforts of those who have served -- in combat or supporting combat -- and still question just how much we are willing to spend in human lives and tax dollars. I wish more of this country would understand that duality.

Pushing politics completely aside, I've always thought that Canada has the coolest flag.....so symbolic, so easy to recognize, and it's not overly busy like America's flag is - and to some extent, Mexico's flag is, too - and the two basic colors complement each other well. Just a very cool flag. Rob
I love the Canadian flag, too--everything about it.
I'm pretty sure I was conceived in BC. Wish my parents had stayed there.

Hermann had its little 4th of July parade as well, similar to UL’s town. Tractors, horses, a few collectible cars, the Lion Club, etc.
