January declutter challenges!
I am in for 3 items a day! I have done so
much it feels like there isn't much more
but, there always seems to be....lol
Jan.01/2020
--2 dish cloths stain and thread bare
used one last time as rags then garbage.
--1 pen not working right in garbage, not allowed
to hang around and be annoying again.
I want to finish the living room cull and reorganize. It’s more than half done, it needs:
chair & ottoman polished and put in their place. Cleaned 2x, 1/3/20
the new dresser put where the graphics table currently sits. This is the major piece of this. The stuff is also DHs, so it’s not mine to do. I can tidy and organize, but not cull here. The dresser has to be delivered too.
This is done 1/16!
the remaining piles o stuff in the room dealt with. Most of this is mine.
No work on this today: 1/4

I am figuring if I have not used these in many years I
clearly don't like them and won't use them...lol
--1 small bag of Christmas cards (30) to donate
same as above had for many, many years.
They well be new to someone else.
--1 small bag of Christmas ribbon at least (20)
same as above not used in many years.

All Dropped off a big bag of stuff from December culling.
Today put put into the donate/gift bin: a snow globe received as a present. Must have been chesp as Christmas tree inside was crooked.
Finished some potholders from old 8” quilt blocks and threw away my old ones. Homemade insulated potholder/hot pads were among the gifts I made for freinds and family this Christmas. They are really nice and useful.
Danna you inspired me to get rid of a couple pens I don't like. My big challenge this winter will be going through my filing cabinets. Paper is my nemesis.
Yppej Glad I could help...lol
Paper is evil! I have less then I use to because
I have gone paperless on so many things.
I'll join for 5 items a day or more.
1/4: total 6:
5 gas cans from husband's shed stash, which he came up with, no stealth decluttering
1 metal folding chair
All out by curb with a free sign, so we shall see.

I admit to having a fondness for paper records, but I am disciplined about culling and organizing them at the beginning of each year. I have completed the process for 2020.
I have a small "stash" of new socks and hosiery. I went through it this morning and pulled out 5 pairs to be donated.
I'm experimenting with a paper process in which I keep a file called "I probably don't need this, but just in case." It does mean handling paper twice, but at the end of the year it becomes super easy to chuck that electronically deposited check, receipt for pants I might have returned but decided I liked and so on, or to decide that yes, I DO want to keep that nice thank you note, it got sweeter over time.
Overall, I'm finding that having this interim period works better for me with a lot of things than outright removal. The trick is that I have to be somewhat disciplined, no fair using Limbo as a resting place for everything under the sun, and no good letting it sit beyond a scheduled time period. Today is the day for the IPDNT file, onward!

--1 small bag of paper to recycling
--printer that does not fit new printer to Dd
Total to date 14
Modifying to four items per day as five feels like too much work:
1/5: 1 brass floor lamp that needs a new shade, taken from curb already
1 old ice cream maker
1 old cb related electronics item
2 boxes of old floor tiles
new total: 10/Jan
1/6: green pottery planter
one plastic tool box, broken hinges
One tackle box inherited from parents years ago
A bunch of bluefish hooks in the tackle box
new total: 14/Jan
An ugly clock someone gave me for Christmas.
The pound of flavored coffee a friend gave us for Christmas that we cannot stand.
One of my best friends’ daughter worked in a bead shop for a long time. She’s starting her own online biz. I’m culling my lifetime collection of beads, beading supplies, etc. by giving them to her. I suppose at some point money other than postage will be exchanged, but we aren’t there, yet.
I started this process this morning. Mind you there are TWO BOOKCASES of beads, beading supplies, containers, looms, thread, etc to go through! It is going to take me some time. But I have one small box of beads ready to mail.
I also have made a list of other known culls, ongoing and one shot, so I can cross them off as I get them done.

--1 more small bag of paper---recycle
--2 half bags of Christmas Crackers (not edible but table decor) give away
--1 grease screen--never used in years....donate

Purse with broken snap
Old carry on luggage too large for plane carryon.
Returned address book wrong color
Returned new carryon bag as too large
.
New total: 19
1 pair of sunglasses that I didn't realize were men's, not worth returning to the dollar store, and a pair of reading glasses from there that broke.
Over my Christmas break, I did a mass clean-out. Clothes that never get worn, old bedding that was either ripped or not used, pots and pans that never got used or were looking pretty bad, kitchen gadgets/items that were shoved in cabinets that nobody opens. I even went through my almost 16 year old's room and did a clean up as he has a habit of things not making it to the trash can and accumulating on the dresser or desk.
1/8: Dog leash, chewed and torn
Dog halter, chewed and torn
2 eyeglass cases
Jan total: 23
edited to add
bag containing old dog supplies, torn
fingernail clippers
returning pedometer that did not work correctly
wallet that came in my consignment store bag

Threw away 2 sets of sheets and a mattress pad. They had holes or the elastic was worn out. I decided we only needed 2 sets of sheets for our bed so bought one new set and a mattress pad. The last mattress pad lasted 15 years but the sheets only 4.
60 pieces of paper (documents, not blank paper).
Finally pulled the trigger and got rid of all my "fat" clothes. I was 60 lbs heavier not too long ago and held onto all the clothes from each size as I went down. I decided that getting rid of all the clothes that are too big for me would encourage me to not regain the weight.

That is terrific. Can I ask how you managed to lose 60 pounds? That is exactly what I need to do, and I haven't had much success.

Daily walks, eating better (less snacking), and using Thrive. A lot of people are turned off using Thrive because it's set up like a pyramid scheme but you don't have to participate in promoting it and the stuff really works!! I am 5'10 so nobody thought I was over-weight until they saw a before and after picture. Then they were like, OMG you were!!

Another Christmas gift I did not like and a worn out coaster. I got new coasters for Christmas that I do like.
Two great finds and I didn't even have to declutter anything. Just looked in places I rarely do. Found an old laptop that had been passed down from oldest son to youngest son that never got used. It is now mine! I also found the log holder that goes with my fireplace set in the garage while trying to hook the laptop up to our internet. It was one the ground at the front of the garage which I never go to because everything I need is at the back of the garage.
1 small calculator that stopped working
1 budget notebook with broken cover, replaced with spare
2 prs socks
1 pr sunglasses
another old planter
new tota: 32
A Tupperware lid that I cannot get clean.
Furniture adjustment #2: we rented a van for the weekend. The French bakers table DH had used for hobby space is being consigned. The low dresser we’re buying is going in its place. So.. tomorrow we load up the table, take it to the shop, pay for the dresser, leave the bakers table and then put the dresser in place at home. The table won’t yield enough $ to pay for the table, but it will help. The drawer space will be welcome, concealed storage is always a plus. Also we’ll work on the storage unit, bringing a slug home, I think. More progress!
2 cool planters but I bought 4 things yesterday so need to let go of four old things
2 fiesta ware plates, same rationale
(break even, don't count)
mason jar
5 mailers
2 planners I bought and dont like
mini address book ditto

I received beautiful new pots and pans for Christmas and put them where I used to put decorative glass jars of food. (The cupboard doors are long broken off/missing on that cabinet). So now I have who knows how many years old dried beans, dried lentils, oatmeal and popcorn to be popped. Would you still eat these foodstuffs?

Don't know if those items are like Twinkies and can survive for decades and still just as delicious but I'd check for expiration dates and use that as a guide.
I poured them out of the original packaging years ago to put them in the glass jars, no expiration dates available. IL may know the answer.
All husband's stuff as I have very little to go through anymore since my massive purge on Christmas break. I do need to do one more sweep of my t-shirts and get rid of some more coffee mugs but it's not a priority right now.
Today's purge..
7 dress shirts
1 leather coat with 5 lbs of dust on it but with the tags still attached
4 dress pants
1 raincoat (known husband 23 years and never seen him wear a raincoat)
9 bulky hangers

Y, throw the food away.
OMG! I was cleaning the top of the fridge which I don't do as often as I should. You could have asked me 100 times if there was anything in the cabinets above the fridge and I would have told you 100 times NO! I decided to look and there were more freaking coffee cups!! Plus a salad bowl that was still unopened, random candlestick holders (we own no candles by the way), and some wine glasses and three bottle of alcohol (and neither of us drink!). Into the trash with all of it!!

Thrift store please, not landfill!!!
We only have one local thrift store and it is only open when I am at work. If you drop stuff off when they are closed, they fine you. I guess they have security camera that can read license plates. Not worth a ticket to do a good deed unfortunately.

Dried beans keep for years. If the popcorn pops and smells good, it is fine. If it doesn’t smell like popcorn, it probably won’t taste good either, but it won’t hurt you.
Jan 09,10 & 11th
---1 not working electric sweeper--to the curb someone handier then me
might want to try and fix it.
--- 1 Book to charity box
---5 Jars of spices of undetermined age in the garage...(they had no smell left)
--a large quantity of compostable bags for your compost. Lesson do NOT store
compostable in an open container in a damp place. Surprise, surprise they start
to biodegrade!
--1 cont of fried onions not sure why I bought then other then they appealed to me
at the time. Very tasty but, very salty, greasy and made me feel bloated.

I went through my large pile of books waiting to be read and culled out the ones that have been there for years, that I obviously don't want to read. A couple are action and adventure that my MIL in the nursing home would enjoy, so I'll bring those to her and donate the others.

I know. I have been giving stuff to AmVets and Purple Heart lately but they have stopped coming around for pick ups. Used to give a lot when boys were little and out growing everything so quickly.
Thanks CL. I am cooking up my first canister which is dried lima beans.

See if you have a local freecycle group.
Today's declutter...
Went through stacks and stacks of old photos and purge the duplicates and the blurry or just plain crappy ones. You know... back in the day when you would have to wait a week for your pictures to get developed only to find out 50% of them were bad or blurry.
I even got the husband to start clearing some stuff out of his room. Old computer monitors, boxes of electronic equipment that is out of date (think Windows 98 type stuff), and several empty boxes that various items were packaged in.
Jan12th
--2 Placemats (Really nice but, I have way too many)
Made Dd a carrier/holder for her knitting needles when
she wants to take them out. Turn out cute and useful and
out of my house!
Total to date 41....
My daughter took her two prom dresses and dropped them off at a local church - they're collecting items for the Night to Shine event (sponsored by Tim Tebow - a prom for folks with special needs). I just continue to chuck items into a bag for donation as I come across them. Tablecloth that is too short, a winter coffee mug, some Christmas lights I don't need, various pieces of inexpensive jewelry, etc.
Bought;2 things today: a basket and a metal shaker. The shaker will get silk flowers, its big enough. The basket got used at the supermarket on the way home. But my usual rule for culling or putting away is 5:1, so I need to find 10 items to cull...
Fortunately we bought home 8 boxes of books yesterday, so finding 10 pieces to go out should be simple. There’s a gathering of the clan this weekend, so if I find 10 books to cull, I know where to take them and they’ll be appreciated!
Five items of clothing, a pair of earrings, and a glass canister.
Five items of clothing, a pair of earrings, and a glass canister. :laff:. I was on an ultra minimalism website just now and when i read this I thought these were the items you chose to own. A very amusing moment ensued when i tried to imagine why you'd chosen those seven things! "What exactly would make a glass canister the most essential possession you own after the clothes on your back and that all-important pair of earrings ... hmmm .... maybe it has a magic genie inside?"
We would fail miserably in one of those websites. We were out in the shed today and I counted 7 trailer hitch balls and my husband does not own a truck anymore. He won't get rid of them because when he gets another truck, one of them will fit. . .

My husband can join yours. We have a big stack of old tires in our shed. He won’t get rid of them yet when our cars need tires he has never looked to see if they fit. Ugh!
yep ... My feeling is that if an item is going to be saved and stored and then ignored when it's actually useful, then we're simply storing garbage, and I'd like to know what the point of that would possibly be. I'm trying to find a slightly less irritated way to express this, as I ponder a mountain of assorted screws, bolts, outlets, washers, drill bits and other "just in case" carpentry aids. We could build a second house - except that if we did, our first stop would be the hardware store to buy all new screws, bolts, washers, outlets and drill bits.

My husband sort of did build a second house. It is a detached garage but it is huge! Even has a second floor!! Has a space large enough to store four hot rods (stacked), and a workshop. The second floor is storage for car parts.
This morning's declutter...
Went through old medicine/prescriptions and threw out expired or unused ones. Also went through the various first aid kits we had accumulated and consolidated them.
I inherited the desk of a hoarder when I came to a new section within my current job about two years ago. The first year, she was also here but sat in a different area within the same office so I felt obligated to keep her desk pretty much as she had it. She left Dec 2018 but it was unsure if she'd be back or not. It's officially been a year since she left so today, I cleared out all her crap that had been driving me NUTS for the last two years. She hoarded pens/pencils/hi-lighters/post it notes/markers/empty folders. You name it, she had it on her desk or in one of her overheads. Now... I made the desk my own finally and it looks so nice now!!

I even put the junk like fliers and room service menus away in a drawer when I'm in a hotel, just so I'm not surrounded by crap that's not mine. So nice you finally got to settle in!

Gave away some dog grooming tools to my neighbor today- comb, brushes, scissors. Now I just have what I actually use, yay! Put them in a caddy and made a handy place to put it. No more dog brushes laying around.

I must have started a trend. Co-worker came in and immediately started clearing all the crap that is on her desk. :laff: Now if only the slob who sits behind would do that (not going to happen though).
Stove is being serviced today. So that part of the kitchen will be deep cleaned, first time in far too long!
More work in the living room, but since it has gotten major culling and clean up recently: put a bed in, take the bed and large table out, and then put a dresser and stationary bike in, all in the past 3 months, it’s actually not too bad. Next is the hallway, which will also be pretty easy. The kitchen was started last night, but it needs most of the work.
Also finally got the colored pencils to the neighbor who will use them, yesterday.
I have a box to make up and ship to the BIL as well as some others.

That is the one thing I appreciated in our kitchen remodel. They ripped up the floors so no cleaning necessary. The bad part is a friend was doing all the work and was very slow so we lived with sub-flooring for way too long!

Threw out a garbage bag worth of stuff from the storage unit. Can't see much improvement, a first step is a first step.
Old cookbooks that don't get used and maps that are out of date.
I went through the bathroom cupboard: 1 sunscreen (replace annually right?), a box that held only 1 votive candle, 1 bag from cough drops-I combined 2 partials. Looks neater now. I love half empty cupboards:)
Went through doll storage box and got rid of 5 dolls and a candle holder.
Want to go through a storage box a day for the next 6 weeks, prior to possible move.

I am not a slave to expiration dates by any means, but I have always heard that sunscreen should be discarded after it reaches its date.

Yes. It's one expiration date I honor. Who needs skin cancer.
Started on the dining room today. Problem is all the stuff which got pulled out is now in the living room, kitchen and hall, which had been clean, sigh. But I’ve started the reorg required. I had no idea how much stuff I’d stashed around the edges of the dining room! This leaves two chunks of the huge kitchen with accumulated mess and stored “stuff”. Mostly in boxes. Some of it is flea market fodder. Some of it is “keeps” another chunk is things to sell. The obvious trash is gone.
I got rid of the years old oatmeal.

Set of walkie-talkies from child's room clean-out. Would not charge and one literally had pieces breaking off in my hand. Garbage.
A bunch of sweaters (mostly mine but some were the husband's) and one coat.
We found a good place to donate the old auto repair manuals. Hurrah!
Started today the process of pulling together all the paper organization bits. Daunting, this goes back years...
A manual for a blender I no longer own.
Got rid of some outdoor fine plastic netting for the garden. Last year it killed two blue runner snakes before we took it down, don't want to go there again.
Put a very nice sweater in the donate bag. I just don't like the way it looks on me and I have plenty others.

Danna, that’s great. I also donated a suitcase that was too heavy when full. Even my husband who doesn’t like to get rid of stuff said to. Emptied my bookcase today and only kept about 10. The rest will go to the thrift store. Filled it with family pictures and the 8 doggie urns.
The old kidney beans, which did not taste good when cooked. I have two more jars of beans to cook and try from years old decorative canisters.
I keep a medium sized box under a table in my guest room. In it goes any item I'm done with or haven't used. This week it was full. Off to the thrift store along with a griddle and a breadmaker-dropped off to us by my sister. Breathe................:)

When the clutter in your life is electronic...........
My goal today is to continue through my email inbox until it is ZERO! I've been chipping away this week. I'm down from 235 to 94. Some simply needed to be read and deleted. Others have information I may well need in the future. If it's family stuff, it is filed. If it is instructional it is now a document in my files.
Today? ZERO! I cannot wait!
I have a 2nd email address I use for websites and blog comments as well as 2 subscriptions. I started keeping it clean early last summer. It currently just has 10. 7 have a 1 hour video I really want to view and I'm very bad about sitting patiently for 1hour watching a video. They all require full attention.
Happy Friday and 1/31-final day of January is a great day to FINISH SOMETHING IN YOUR LIFE!

I run my life on a “0 inbox” principle. Anything left in it is on my “do this thing” list.
It is empty 5 out of 7 nights when I go to bed.

I am similar to you IL.
Mattress topper to go to BIL, ready except not yet addressed. Paperwork ready to go to SIL, also not yet addressed. Redo to farm, ready to go in the mail. Figured the storage rent today for last year. If we just buy a shed it will be cheaper!
