*New thread out of respect - sorry for the misspelling of the name.

Now his wife, who stayed with him for the big ring, gets his money without having to put up with any more of his cheating.

Helicopters are to be avoided whenever possible, in my experience.

Thank you for confirming that. That was always my impression, but not being in an economic bracket where I can afford to take helicopters anywhere, I didn’t have to worry about it.

We have to put patients on them for evac, and we do a risk-benefit analysis every time. It's not a good way to travel if you have other options.

It’s really sad that his oldest daughter was on it too. Very sad. Plus they have a 7 month old baby.

Then there was the American crew of the tanker plane that went down fighting Australian bush fires. I bet there won't be extended coverage of their demise.

This accident called to mind the incident back in the 80s (I believe) when Jane Dornacker, a radio traffic host for the WNBC actually was on air when the helicopter she was reporting from went down into the Hudson River... it was horrifying. She died in the crash.

RIP Kobe Bryant.. what a tragedy.

I had no idea it was this dangerous. My ex-husband was a pilot, so I used to read the NTSB report. It's interesting reading.

We had one of those in St. Louis in the 90s, traffic reporter went down in a helicopter. If you Google that, it happens.

We had one in the 80's as well. Traffic reporter and pilot crashed and died less than a mile from my house.

It was very foggy so probably was foolish to go up.

Prayers and condolences to all the families and others effected by this.

It strikes me watching news reports of this how much we could use some more heroes since he seemed to have inspired a lot of people. Aside from basketball skills, I don't really get the admiration for this particular figure.

I had a short term stint doing field work in the Rockies via helicopter. I would never fly in one again voluntarily and might not for pay or job obligations.

I'm not a sports fan and don't understand sports figure idolatry but he seemed to inspire young people in a good way and I'm very sorry for his family and fans.

I wonder if the pilot was enamored with Bryant and made a very bad choice, just wanting to please him.
Such a tragedy......for the families of everyone on that flight.
I wonder if any of the passengers voiced their concern with the fog?

She had 4 kids with him so I am sure she loved him. They have a baby who will never know her dad. Plus people do heal and forgive infidelity.

Is infidelity the new euphemism for rape?

Jane, it’s been so many years I didn’t actually remember that it was rape.

Yeah--sportsball heroes and rich old lechers seem to get away with it. Payoffs, if all else fails.

It ended in a civil lawsuit, not a criminal conviction so I wasn't sure I could write rapist. I do wonder if his victim feels relieved no one else will go through what she did.

He admitted it happened against her will (IIRC she was a hotel housekeeper--no exactly a willing groupie) and he apologized publicly. She declined to press charges, and was probably handsomely rewarded, as was his wife, by the looks of that ring. I have no trouble characterizing him as a rapist.

Teacher Terry

So I looked up the story and the poor woman wouldn’t testify because she was getting death threats. She came from a wealthy family so probably wanted the apology more than the money. When I heard his name I didn’t know who he was until I saw his picture. I don’t follow sports.

There's always one.

Sometimes there's more than one. Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby and Jeffrey Epstein all started out with one. Things don't always come to light or come to light immediately.

But no, I don't think there's always one. Some people behave ethically. Kobe Bryant wasn't one of them though.

Maybe he really did clean up his act--especially after having daughters. His press makes it sound like he did. Good for him, if true.
But I don't get the celebrity hype--lots of good people have died recently, with relatively little fuss.

I meant your comment upon hearing of his death. Berating his wife for reconciling with him assuming just because of money.

Gardnr are you critical of Gayle King too for pointing out the rape story?

Could you love a rapist, and would you stay with him?

It blows my mind that people thought Gayle King and not Snoop Dogg should apologize. MeToo has a long ways to go.

My guess is that he convinced her it was a lie because famous people are pursued. If they were married and had children she wanted to believe him and was gullible. I could be wrong.

A local school principal was placed on leave, then resigned, after personal comments about the Kobe case and his death on her personal FB page caused a huge backlash:
https://www.columbian.com/news/2020/feb/05/camas-principal-on-leave-after-getting-threats-over-bryant-comments/ (https://www.columbian.com/news/2020/feb/05/camas-principal-on-leave-after-getting-threats-over-bryant-comments/)

Quote: “Not gonna lie, seems to me that karma caught up with a rapist today.”

It was a dumb thing to do/write; and she did take it down. The public backlash was incredible. One parent began a campaign of outrage leading ultimately to the principal's resignation. Students even walked out of class in protest.

Just kind of interesting that someone who has climbed the education ladder to that level has had her reputation and career shot due to social media pressure and judgment.

Morale: Better think before you "speak" on social media.

All those other people on the helicopter didn’t deserve to die especially the kids. I agree Kay that was so dumb of her.
