View Full Version : March Purge

I had almost an entire drawer devoted to tapers and related accessories. I really don't burn tapers anymore (dangerous with crazy cats leaping about) so I gifted them all, as well as a pair of brass candlesticks. I had a bit of a pang because the candlesticks were a wedding present, and some of the tapers are very nice beeswax. I find it easier to let go of certain things by giving them directly to a friend who wants them (candles) or through our local FB giving group (candlesticks). It feels more real that I'm putting them in the hands of someone who will get enjoyment from them (as opposed to having them languish in a drawer) than when I donate them to a thrift store, although it does involve a bit more effort. In any event, it feels good to send them on their way.

I have trillium lead crystal candlesticks that are dust collectors but I have them on my buffet. I would never use the candles in them. I should ask my kids if either of them could use them. They have so many dust collectors of their own though.

A friend's daughter is opening an online bead shop. I've been culling the bookcase full of beads, a bit at a time and sending things along. Third box is ready to go and I missed a few things, so I'll likely do the 4th pretty quickly!

i filled a 2nd box and sent the two along.3/6.

Okay, I am in for 3 items a day since I got too ambitious and then kind of stopped doing it, it got overwhelming.
Will report back tomorrow.

Took 2 shaker cups out of the cupboard and put in the donate pile this morning. Haven't used them for several years and they keep falling out. One less mico-aggression. I'm going through my closets again. Goal is to have everything in one closet, which, really, is more than enough. Selling the nicer items on Poshmark and donating the rest. If stuff doesn't sell by end of September, it gets donated. My husband is off work next week for spring break, so if the weather is nice, I'll take Friday off and we're cleaning out the garage. Hoping to sell a bunch of camping equipment.

I've been quilting up a storm so I'm purging batting and fabric:cool: I'm quilting my 4th lap size since yesterday! All will go to my Charity Group for local shelters and hospitals.

This month, I want to go through several boxes of jewelry as I don't wear it anymore. Mostly costume stuff but probably some gold and silver. Really don't know what to do with it though. Goodwill?

A local jeweller will weigh and apply unwanted gold to a purchase of a service or item. Not sure about silver though

Contacted my MIL's senior living complex and asked if the activities director could use our Wii. They were thrilled. They use it for events and for fitness. Win win.

Our local jewelers pay cash for gold and silver. I take my costume jewelry to a thrift store.

In preparation for me moving in, my boyfriend and his parents went through his childhood closet - his items, their items, the uncle's items, misc junk, etc. We kept a few of his childhood toys, his baseball cards, and a handful other items but the closet now has the entire floor clear. It was his purging rather than mine, but I'm super proud of him as we all worked on the other two closets a couple weeks ago and tackling the entire garage is next... I have a stack of nice shirts and a few dresses posted for sale online and if they don't sell by the end of March, I'm giving them away on our local FB 'Buy Nothing' group.

Got rid of some dog harnesses found in car clean out; one dog chews the other's harness. Also an old pair of clippers I had replaced.
Got rid of a table my dad gave me years ago, that he stripped and I was supposed to refinish. It was nice wood but not our style and top warped in shed so felt guilty but got rid of it.
Recycling lap top adapter for laptop no longer have.
Sending my son a piece of memorobilia he left behind in 2006.

Dropped off 53 items at Goodwill today. Mostly pots and pans that were in the storage unit. Stuff husband put in the storage unit before we started dating in 2007. Also included clothing that no longer fit and a bunch of unused patterns that no one on the Buy Nothing group wanted. Feels good to get the stuff out of the condo.

We have overnight guests this weekend, so the next couple of days is getting the condo ready for them.

Cleaned out drawer in bathroom, found a 4oz bottle of hand sanitizer.
Cleaned out dog meds. Determined that we have enough flea/tick and Heartworm preventive to take all 3 dogs thru the summer. Found a bottle of doggy omegas.
cleaned out under the bathroom sink and found a new bottle of shampoo for me, and a full bottle of Skin So Soft bug guard, good for me and to use on my one dog that the mosquitoes like.
Talk about shopping your own cupboards, now I need to adjust an place my much abbreviated Amazon order!

I took a vacation day Friday and DH and DD and I cleaned out the garage. We sold the camping equipment this weekend, along with DH's bows and arrows and a couple other items. Have stuff stacked up to take to the county's hazardous waste drop off the first Saturday in April (old paint cans, etc.). Have some hunting clothing that I'd like to sell. If it doesn't, I'll donate it somewhere. Most everything is up off the floor and on shelves. Floor is swept. So much nicer to pull the cars into now.

Pulling CARS into a garage - isn't that un-American? Every time we go by open garages on our walks, we observe that they are full of stuff without even enough space to spare for a motorcycle!

Have a donation box out on the porch of about 50 items for pickup. Yeah! Have another pickup scheduled next month, so that gives me time to do another round of decluttering.

Our cars have ALWAYS been in our garage. I guess that's because I'm an immigrant?:~)

That REALLY made me LOL!thumbsup! And we have a small garage. Shelving along 1 side and barely enough room on the front wall for our small upright freezer, garbage and recycle bins as well as an old particleboard bookcase I use for my gardening stuff-it sits in front of my car.

At the moment, there is only 1 home on our block that keeps a vehicle in the driveway. And they are hoarders......I saw inside their front door once...a goat path to the kitchen is all I saw....so sad. They are wonderful people and very active outdoors.

We've always been able to pull our cars into our garage - we just have more room now around them. The walls are lined with shelves, but stuff is off the floor for the most part.

We may have been able to park our car in our garage for 3-4 years after we bought our house, in 1985. Since then it's been home to tires, tools, outdoor furniture, live pigs, memorabilia, Christmas decorations, unused paints and varnishes, detritus from elders' estates, furniture we may "need someday" planting solutions, lawn machinery and hand tools, car repair equipment, and on and on.

Now, without a garage, we are forced to re-evaluate every year and give stuff away. DH still doesn't understand the beauty in that, but I do.

That made me laugh! :laff: I take comfort in the fact that we never got as bad as that. Although it was pretty close.

No garage here, which may be a good thing. Would probably end up arguing over who got to use it. LOL.

Our garage is very small, one car. In the summer it has temporary mess, but come fall it is cleared for the car. I've gotten better about making it possible to get the car in within a half hour clean up if necessary. You know, that old trick of putting things back???

Did a top-to-bottom, no-holes-barred cleaning of the bathroom. Trashed a bunch of little things that were saved for....???? Need to decide on the next room. LOL.

In my book clean out I am keeping half a shelf of adult novels that are not ones I absolutely love but half of them are ones I like pretty much and I think there’s one or two I haven’t read. Here’s the thing, I’m using their physical presence as a “book list because what if I wanna go back and read them some black? I won’t remember the titles Because they aren’t number one novels.

So this is a dumb reason to keep physical objects if I just need to make a quick list on a digital medium.

Not so dumb, IL. Sometimes the physical presence is more a remind than a digital list that gets lost amongst all the other digital stuff.
