View Full Version : Creating a hair timer

For the last 20 years or so I've kept my hair short. Every three weeks SO cuts it with a #1 blade on the sides and a #3 blade on top. Today I decided to have him use the #1 blade on all of it. The plan is to not cut it until the current social distancing rules end. This is what it looks like now:

Hopefully life will get back to normal before it looks like this (taken a little over 30 years ago when I was in college).

Not that bad looking!

We bought a hair trimmer set at Costco a few months ago, but have been too chicken to use it. It's time may have come, however.
Looks good, JP!

Looks good! Um... maybe get a few hair elastics, just in case! LOL

My dad says he’s going to grow a beard and a ponytail. Mom is upset that her hair will get long and the grey will grow out.

Ddil got literally the last haircut in her town and chopped it four inches higher than ever.

meanwhile I’ve been cutting Dh hair with the goat trimmers for years and mine was last cut in 2003, last dyed in college on a whim.

my biggest hair challenge will be remembering to brush it before I teach today. So often I forget and do it in the car at a stoplight or the school parking lot.

I seriously hope this doesn't go on that long! I don't even own any sort of comb or brush...

All the stuff we take for granted is funny. My hair hasn’t been colored in almost 4 months and it’s white:)). I cut a inch off myself. At this point the least of my worries.

Hmmm... have a veggie scrubber brush? Might for a "short" while. LOL

I haven't colored my hair in decades. It's a slowly greying brown, and I actually like it. Last cut was about 3 weeks ago and was a home cut.

jp1, so nice to "see" you!!! The minimal hair look is great. I'm still on a neighborhood group with NJ folks, and I see some of my NJ whiners complaining about who will do their hair..

#FirstWorldProblems.

I plan on growing mine out and if I have to do a Jane Goodall with the grey ponytail style, I'm all in.

Why is it first world problems if you still have to look presentable to go to the office etc.? Not everyone is work from home. It seems to me the obviously privileged people at this point, who don't have a right to judge anyone, are those employed and working from home. But others still have to show up at jobs etc..

That's true.. I just thought in the scheme of things letting hair grow for 3 months would not be a big issue for most. My apologies..Looking 100% presentable is not my strong suit even on a good day.

I got my hair cut short just before the salons were closed. Went and bought 3 boxes of dye too. My hair color is growing out and I HATE how old the gray makes me look. Will color it tomorrow. I feel better when I look better. We do go for walks in the neighborhood and do "social distancing." I'm definitely not ready to look my age. It is so shocking to see people who are way younger than me that look at least 80. No thanks. Vain... probably.

I am afraid to dye my own hair.

When I told my sister of my plan she commented that as shelter in place progresses her neighbors seem less and less concerned with appearances. She has noticed several of them (male and female) who in the past always looked ‘put together’ out doing things like putting the trash out for pickup wearing rumpled sweats with uncombed hair and the like. Hopefully it’s just laziness and not depression.

If your not going out or having people over no point in worrying about your appearance.

I have been whacking on my hair since I retired so no great fear of not being able to get it trimmed for several months. Maybe a salon visit every six months for a trim but it is long and straight with bangs so easy to keep. I still get "presentable" even if I stay in - just makes me feel better. I suppose that may change if this goes on for months.

Since I was working from home before all this I’d already established a plan of showering and dressing every day, even though it’s in casual clothes (usually shorts and a t shirt). Having to add hair styling to that routine is definitely not simple living. But for a silly project like this I suppose I will manage if it comes to that...

The reality is that I will start getting ‘bed head’ on the sides after about 3 weeks.

I am hoping that this situation will redefine “presentable” a bit. Several of my students “came to class” in pajamas yesterday. One was curled up in a blanket on the couch and seemed so much happier than in the usual chair. OTOH, Dh has worn the same flannel shirt “to work” for three days. While I appreciate the reduction in laundry, I think maybe he needs to make more of an effort.

I am making masks on demand, we have lots of requests from hospitals and nursing homes. However I am going to start to make some headbands too. I cut my nails short too. Nail salons and some hairdressers are open here but I’m not going. DH does his own hair with clippers. Best investment he ever made.
I do get dressed every morning and go for a walk when the sun rises about 7 am so obviously I put clothes on, even if they are dirty. I plan what to make for dinner and check recipes with what I have in the house. Some things I know helps me not slip into depression.

I haven’t had a professional haircut since about 1980. So, my head is fine. DH will need some trimming.

I've been cutting my own hair for the past 20 years or so, typically using a #2 or #3, depending on how I feel at the moment, and sporting one length for sides and top. I tried a #1 once but thought it made me look like Nancy's friend Sluggo.

Once I retired and stopped shaving I applied the same rule to beard and hair, cutting everything the same length and waiting until I got to the stage where I appeared to have perpetual bed head.

Here's examples of both sides of the spectrum.

Who decided that hair stylist is an essential service? says she who now really really needs a trim? ;) I managed to cut my bangs somewhat but the rest is out of my skill set.

I hadn't noticed it initially, but having inspected my new do more closely I totally understand about the Sluggo look. For the next week or two until it grows out a bit if I go sit out on the deck I will need to either wear a hat or put sunscreen on the top of my head...

OMG. Ten weeks in I am reminded on a daily basis why I went to the "buzz it all down every 3 weeks" plan all those years ago. Now that restaurants in San Francisco are going to be opening for outside dining on Monday I've decided to end this horribly thought out experiment. I can't imagine how people like Crystal Gayle get through the day.

I'm also reminded that the forum software programmers are idiots, but that's a topic for another day.

Not bad at all, jp1.

I've always gotten really short hair cuts and then just let it grow out for months and months. I'm in a "let it grow out" phase and can actually pull it back into a tiny little pony tail! It's enough to help in the hot summer days, so looks like I'll be growing it out for a while.

I was very happy to get my hair cut and colored a few weeks ago. They only had one customer at a time and you had to wait in your car until your turn. We were masked and my hairdresser said he cleaned everything between people. His wife works in a nursing home so he is aware of how important it is.

The situation with the two hair stylists in MO who had 140 clients while they were symptomatic, yet infected zero of them, highlights the critical importance of following all the health guidance regarding spread of this disease. Which they apparently did.

If someone other than SO was my hair stylist I would be calling them to inquire what they were doing. If they didn't seem to be taking it seriously I'd be looking elsewhere for a stylist.
