View Full Version : Cash not being accepted as payment due to CV
On another forum where I'm a long term member, someone reported being at Home Depot and hearing an announcement that cash was not being accepted. Apparently a lot of contractor types walked out.
Have you run into any businesses in your area that are not accepting cash?
As far back as a month ago when I went to OH to dive, manned tollbooths in IL, IN, and OH were closed. You had to use a transponder (EZ-Pass). The IN and OH unmanned tollbooths were accepting cash. I did this. You just inserted it into the machine. IL unmanned tollbooths that could take cash/credit are closed. Everyone has to pay online that doesn't have a transponder.
The Mackinac Bridge between the two peninsulas of Michigan is not accepting cash. You have to use a bridge specific transponder or debit/credit card.

Here people greatly discourage use of cash in the local stores. I don't think there's a prohibition, but there's definitely social pressure. I haven't been to major chain stores, so I can't testify to their policies.
I think cash can be refused at point of purchase but not for paying bills since printed on currency is "this note is legal tender, for all debts public and private". I would like to see that changed. You can get a money order at the post office if you do not have a credit card or bank account.

Not a problem here, hope we can continue to use cash.
I am trying NOT to use it. I like the chip option and really not touching anything.
I use Apple Pay whenever possible but you often still have to put in your PIN.
I was a cash/debit card person until last year when I got a 2% cash back credit card. Now I'm a true believer. I love the convenience, not having to break a $20 or carry a lot of change. I pay it off daily, so I never have a balance. Since interest rates have been so low for so long, I earn almost no interest on my savings account, so the cash back credit card makes up for it. And now with Covid-19, I'd rather not touch cash that's been passed around anyway.
The only place I'm currently using cash is the small mom and pop vegetable store near us. They won't accept cards for less than $10 and I rarely spend that much there. I wish I could use my card there. Cash, in the current circumstances, seems like a needlessly risky way of paying for stuff.

Times are creating funny scenarios. Recently the problems with credit cards being misused, stolen or fraudulently used had encouraged a number of people to turn back to using cash. I am buying so little that I use my CC and not cash routinely
