View Full Version : Took a PTO day today
As part of California and the Bay Area's cautious slow reopening a number of parks were opened up on Monday in San Mateo County (the county immediately south of san francisco). Needing to get out, I decided to take a PTO day today and go for a hike. (It was also an absolutely gorgeous day today.) Almost nobody was out on the trail, one of my favorites, with views at the top of both the bay to the east, and the ocean to the west. We still have a long road to travel in this calamity but I feel so much better now than I have felt since this all started. And I got in 7.9 miles at 14,786 steps and an elevation gain of 56 floors according to my phone (858 feet of elevation gain according to AllTrails.com).
Interestingly a fair number of planes took off from SFO during the two hours I was out there, although they were only using one of the runways. Nowhere near normal amounts but more than I expected.

Gorgeous! Glad you were able to get out.

Thanks. Me too. This has me thinking that I may shift my work schedule to include working either saturday or sunday so that I can do this every week midweek. My employer has made it very clear that doing stuff like that is totally cool, so it might be a good way to be able to get out without facing crowded trails of potentially germy people.

Sounds good. I'm burned out, almost can't keep going burned out, but I don't even take PTO as I'm saving it if I ever needed it for something covid related (i'm not trying to get the virus mind). Talking about may not be sustainable, but seems necessary. I can't go on, I go on.

I wish I had some magical words that would make you feel better. But I don’t think they exist. Every single one of us is struggling to deal with this. When I look at some of the other people I know, and what they are dealing with which is monumental compared to what I’m dealing with (shout-out to the coworker whose live in GF is an ICU nurse in NYC) I am amazed at how strong they are compared to how weak I feel.
JP did you hike with a mask dangling around your neck in case someone approached you, or does your state not fine you if you are trying to social distance and others come within 6 feet of you?
If I had a view like that, I certainly would take advantage of it!

On the up and down part I wore it the whole time because I was passing people every 5 minutes or whatever. The up and down part of the trail is actually a service road so technically a mask wouldn’t have been required anyway unless some jerk insisted on walking down the middle while passing someone. That wasn’t the case though. Most everyone had masks on and all were doing their best to stay away from me. On the two mile long part on top of the ridge there were literally no people the entire way going out and back so it was around my neck. They coyote that crossed 20 feet in front of me during that part was hopefully covid negative....

So long as you did not enjoy some impromptu coyote carpaccio you probably are okay.

I don't remember what sort of work you do. Would taking one day off to take a break be that big of a problem?

Maybe if a tuna had gone past I would've been tempted to have impromptu tuna sashimi, but coyote carpaccio isn't really to my taste.
