View Full Version : Annoyed by the pandemic.....

Without going into detail - I'm very annoyed by the pandemic. SO and I would like to be in Minneapolis protesting right now - but can't wisely do so due to travel risk. It could be said that if there were no pandemic, we'd be working and unable to go - true enough - but it still bites anyway.
I have so so so much respect for the activists on the ground and do dislike myself a bit for not being there. This time truly feels different - I believe there will permanent consequences going forward. We'll see. Rob
Their mayor seems to get it from clips I see.
Why do you think I call it "that stupid plague."
It's interfered with my diving, which has me VERY peeved! I lost two months of practice for my big diving class this year due to the local quarry not opening until June 1 (usually would open the beginning of April).
I cancelled my vacation which was supposed to be this week. The only states that want me are too far away for a one week road trip. My governor will not let outdoor attractions open but did authorize haircuts because he wanted one himself.

Diving is very important to you - as is activism for me. Each to their own, no? This pandemic sucks for us all in some way. Rob

Me too. We celebrate our anniversary every 5 years traveling to a new location for 2 weeks. We were flying into Calgary and visiting Banff, Jasper and Glacier NPs. (Seeing all NPs is on our goal list).
Our 40th anniversary trip is cancelled. :(

Gardnr,
As one who has dipped a steel cup into a rocky stream in Glacier Park, and hiked onward, I hope the trip you were planning for your 40th is only delayed...
Be Well.

Rob, I am sure those cops will be prosecuted. We cancelled our trip to Europe for a month in August.

I am sorry for all of us in first world problem land where we have had to cancel our anniversary trips or trips to Europe etc. The day my dog died in January I came home and, while crying, poked around travel information for Estonia. Sad but happy, that’s me.
The hardest part of Euro trip planning was trying to identify a 2 to 3 week window where
i didn’t have flower show obligations taking place. I must’ve given up because I didn’t have anything even remotely in mind for the calendar. Just as well given the mess we have now.

Unfortunately we have non refundable plane tickets but if they cancel or make significant changes to the itinerary we get our money back. The hotels are canceled as we weren’t charged yet.

First world problem for sure. I've cancelled 2 other trips during this shelter-in-place as well. This is my first year of retirement and I was really celebrating this year as we rarely spend money. My birthday concert was completely cancelled-they say someday we'll get that refund. My other 2 concerts were postponed to October.
So yes, very disappointing for me. Hell, at this point, I'd be feeling super spoiled just to safely sit in a restaurant and have a meal served. Soonish?
I was supposed to be at my college reunion on the East Coast last week, then in Europe this week with my daughter for a few weeks, then we were both coming back here for the summer. A road trip to Santa Fe during the summer for the opera season.
College reunion turned out to be a Webex event.
Trip to Europe with daughter is now frequent Skype sessions.
Opera season cancelled.
I'll be lucky to see my daughter this year, she's stuck in the UK for the duration.
Stupid virus.
That bites. FWIW, Gadnr, I'm sorry. Rob
Thanks Rob.

Stupid virus doesn’t realize we all have important plans:))
I drove over to the east coast of Florida today, West Palm and Pompano Beach. Only takeout restaurants so that was annoying, but I bought a boat. Now I need to set up a delivery.
And my dock and lift are not scheduled to be built for a while because the motors for the lift are made in Ohio. And due to the virus the plant was shut down, I don’t know if they are back in business or not. It could be July .
Rob have you heard about the Klobuchar connection?

I think I am more annoyed at the responses of some folks to the virus than to the virus, itself. But, while there are a lot of negative things happening, there are soooo many positives - kindnesses, caring, helping, compassion, sympathy, sharing, etc. that are also happening. I'm grateful to see so much of the good, and I truly hope it is the good that continues on from all this.
I hope justice will be done in Minneapolis and everyplace where these outrages continue to occur. But hope is such a toothless emotion...
My friends' plans for Maui, several parties, and a blowout fiftieth birthday have been dashed, but all of us have our health--more or less--and supplies, and no one is an essential worker, so we can hunker down indefinitely, for which I am grateful. (Thank heavens for ebooks, Zoom, home delivery, etc.) For those of you with more complicated lives, this really has been a siege.

My mini-college reunion in June was cancelled.
My daughter's wedding was downsized dramatically. To be honest, neither she nor I am disappointed. Saves us a ton of money and a ton of work, and under the circumstances our families can't complain that they weren't invited.
I have a high school reunion in September.. I'm fairly optimistic that it will occur, but probably few travelers from out of state will come.
Other than that, yes, first world "problems"--I'm happy just hanging out here. I had no travel plans, and my work travel has shut down completely and I'm far from upset about that.
I am most peeved by the unfortunate consequences of the pandemic on local businesses. Our lakeside island wedding venue is closing its doors after 22 years. All their weddings were cancelled. My son still hasn't heard from his boss, who bought the restaurant 4 weeks before everything shut down. Talk about bad timing! I fear this is just the beginning.

One of our reasons for simple living is that it has afforded us the ability to indulge in our love of travel. We had a three week trip planned in September to the east coast starting in Cape Cod for a week and then up to the Canadian Maritimes. Started my cancelations a couple of days ago. Very glad I always get travel insurance even though you have to jump through a few hoops to file a claim. A few of the hotels were supposedly non-refundable but I've been able to get refunds in the past and have fingers crossed for now. Got my air fare refunded today even though initially they wanted to give a voucher.
Was reading that RV rentals have gone up 650%. It was already a bit crowded out there so I can't imagine what it will be like. Sales have spiked as well. In the past few weeks we have had people drive by and approach us in the yard asking to buy our Minnie Winnie. We wouldn't even try to take it out until next fall when all has settled down.
If Biden is smart? Good grief, Rob, look at what you just wrote. Smart is not how I would describe him these days.

oh come now, Joe Biden as the presumptive heir to the throne has all kinds of advisors surrounding him who will steer him correctly on this decision. I mean that sincerely.
Choice of vice presidential candidate is not one he has to make out there in front of a microphone speaking on his own without obvious handlers propping him up.
That is what I cling to, Iris Lilies, that he is deciding nothing by himself, and he has a good ear piece.

Yes! Unlike 45, he will talk with and listen to his advisors. He will read speeches and not go off on a tangent. I'm hopeful!!!!!
Don’t worry about Klobuchar. I heard that when he sniffed her hair it smelled like salad dressing.

For those of us who are older we don’t know how many good years we have left to travel and that both will remain healthy.

Well, I am figuring that I just need to start my United States land travel earlier than I had anticipated. I still wanted at least one more trip to Europe and possibly an Asian trip although I’m beginning to doubt that latter one more and more.

We did a bunch of US traveling with our RV. Really enjoyed seeing the National parks. The only one I want to see are glacier and Banff. We should have seen glacier when we were in Yellowstone and the grand Tetons. I would like to see the East coast states I have missed such as Connecticut, Vermont. NH, etc.
I think vt is the most beautiful new England state

I might even fly if we ever find treatments or vaccines or etc. for this pandemic (not now).
I want out of this country in many ways, doesn't mean I can or will emigrate (it's not impossible but), but I can spend quite a while out of it without doing so if I wanted to with an easily granted travel visa. I wouldn't go anywhere out of the country without at least taking a month there, that's not worth the bother without sufficient time to spend imo.

I actually researched recently how to emigrate to Canada. Rob will be shocked! I am afraid many from the US have done the same. It would be hard to do now that we are retired. I never thought I would feel this way. I am no longer proud to be an American!

you would think I would be cynical by now, in some ways I am, I think I like to pretend I am cynical.
And yet if I am REALLY so cynical why do I keep retaining the capacity to be genuinely shocked again and again and how bad it all is? By every administration (I am not by any means saying they are all equally bad, but faith in basic human goodness is a long time dying), by every step. Maybe I'll reach cynical someday, maybe my cynicism wasn't broad enough, had sharp limits, and needed to be a lot broader. I think that's a lot of it.
I always find it amusing when anyone I know says they want to move to Canada They almost never have actually checked out the requirements.

Agree.
Last year when we were visiting our friends in New Hampshire one of them, who has Canadian family roots, mentioned that now he was free of work he could move to Canada. He offered the idea that he wouldn’t be a burden to anyone, so that was always an option for him.
I countered that Canada certainly would not want him at the age of 65 as a citizen because he is old and would be a strain on the healthcare system. If he was talking about living there but continuing to draw Social Security and pension income from these United States he would have to obtain visas twice a year, I’m not sure how friendly they are about that concept. Also I’m not sure about him using healthcare system As a non-citizen.
Now it is entirely possible that Canada has a native son immigration program of some kind that he might fit into And I do not know about that. But him fitting into the regular immigration slots – no that’s not happening at his advanced age.
Yes, these are frustrating times. Especially the lack of clarity about just about everything. My first world issue is that I can't seem to get my car repaired. Made the appt two weeks ago at Honda dealer for part to be replaced. Took it in today and told that they didn't have the part after they had dismantled it. Charging me daily for a loaner car (new virus laws) and meanwhile my car sits there waiting for a major part they can't seem to find anywhere - new or reconditioned.

Join the crowd. Nurses cannot get repairs done. A friend called AAA for a tow as she had a breakdown enroute home. Towing companies refused to interact with a RN. :|(

Hmm, in this state, auto repair and towing for medical staff and first responders has been deemed an "essential activity" since Day One. Boo hiss on your folks.

My car is kaput too. People aren't allowed to ride in the tow truck, so I'm at a loss. Uber? That doesn't seem safe. I've actually thought about buying a new car; I keep seeing ads for home delivery. Annoying.
Yeah, that thing about having to qualify for Canadian citizenship is problematic. Right after I retired, I looked into it. I was pretty close to qualifying; I would have had to brush up on my French, which is rudimentary at best. I should have tried harder to qualify. I've completely lost faith in this country.

Well, then I count myself lucky. But, whether I see it or not, it is what I am trying to do anyway. I hope, but don't expect it from anyone else, and I do expect kindness from myself. For me, it's actually a pretty easy choice - be nice or don't be nice. I keep trying to choose nice.
