I have so much respect for these protestors and for the mayor of Seattle! When I lived in Portland years ago I briefly dated a guy in Seattle and would take the Amtrak up on weekends.....I know the area this is happening in.
I worry that Trump will order the military in to.murder the protestors and that America truly will slide into 3rd world chaos. Thank You (sarc fully on), American police. Your quest to destroy this country may just work.....we'll see, though I do hope sanity rules the day here and no murders take place. Rob
I have a friend who lives in that neighborhood, who isn't quite pleased with his block being taken over.

I hope no murders take place either---protestor nor cop.
Is it ok to burn government buildings during "peaceful protests?" Should cops simply stand by and allow people to express themselves in this manner?

The rioters are not usually the protesters and it’s not okay for looting and destroying to occur.
What is the goal here? I know they’ve issued the usual demands for free stuff and unicorn rides, but what real outcomes can they hope to accomplish?
Who responds to 911 calls in this zone? Who picks up the garbage? Can anybody pass through the barricades, or are they subject to Antifa screening? Is the whole thing just a sort of anarcho-Marxist LARP?
I hope no murders take place either---protestor nor cop.
King County/Seattle has one of the nation's best rates of survival from cardiac events, because of the leading edge protocols King County Medic One uses.
I hope there aren't any cardiac events in the Autonomous Zone, as from what I understand from my colleagues in the Seattle FD response options are limited and hampered at present.

Antifa or white supremist... round em up and leave the peaceful protesters alone. anarcho-Marxist LARP?????
Ha! Good luck finding "Antifa." Kind of like the fabled jackalope, its menace is mainly apocryphal. Republicans like to tell scary Antifa stories around the firepit at their fundraisers. Honestly--I would join it, if it weren't so hard to find. How could I resist something dedicated to fighting Fascism?
Lots and lots of Seattlites are trained in CPR, which is one reason for the high recovery rates of people falling victims to heart problems in public here.
Well, whatever militant arm of the social justice warrior community is setting up barricades and posing sternly for the cameras. The People’s Militia of Greater Oz. The Emerald City Irregulars. The Vengeful Vegans of Vancouver.

Yes, part of the system is creating and maintaining a high number of citizen CPR responders, and also having the 911 dispatch agency be able to coach CPR over the phone, and having a high number of AEDs in place.
However, the CPR infrastructure is there to buy the several minutes of critical time for the professionals to arrive on scene, and transition to high quality CPR. You lose 10% of brain function a minute, basically, with poor or non-existent CPR...
So, in this neighborhood, citizen CPR responders aren't going to do beans, if the medic crews can't get to the scene quickly and transition to a higher level of care.

Seems we have a bill somewhere, that says something like, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. While a lot of this is because of the four officers in question, citizens have the right to pursue happiness elsewhere. We do NOT have to pay for their pursuit of happiness. Well the problem is not the cost of relocating so much as that other countries do not so readily accept immigrants. I mean I think they should consider Americans as pure refugees from a failed state, political and economic. They should be given refugee status. But countries only allow so many refugees either of course.

Most people wouldn’t leave the US even if it was paid for. Their jobs, family and friends are here. Moving often involves learning a new language. My DIL is from Poland and she said her standard of living is higher here even though she cannot work in her profession.

Ha--dream on! I've said before that I wish I had jumped while I could, and things have only deteriorated ten-fold here since.
They are deteriorating more. There's going to be noone good left running things pretty soon. It's going to be total chaos. A long breakdown I guess.
But there already isn't anyone good running things already? Haha, that's just looking at Trump and maybe others, but I don't mean our politicians many of whom ARE already awful. I mean the bureaucracy itself, lots of government healthcare people are quitting/being fired/resigning/"retiring" at all levels of government, over the blowback caused by right-wing propaganda over coronavirus (and death threats etc. etc.). Noone good left running anything. Expertise, sure but I also look at whose interests those experts represent, but if public health experts are your enemy, well you have the wrong enemy.
People will blow utopia at you about how everything will change after this or that, much needs to change alright, but things are in such a state of dissolution, it would take at LEAST A DECADE to even rebuilt to say the competence prior to Trump (and no I can't imagine the Biden admin being up to it), and that's not utopia. Some things might change for the better at the margins of course.

We live in the best of times the world has ever known, and some of us aren't wise enough to know it. And Rob, I marvel at your on-going desire to have someone pay you to leave this country while simultaneously believing another country will take you. It's cute.
I think we have enough committed career officials and even good-hearted politicians to attempt a correction, but I don't know how--without strong, sustained support from the citizenry--we can possibly throw off the yoke of the oligarchy.

I have investigated relocating to another country for some time now. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Uruguay, New Zealand, Australia, and a few other places.
Almost every one of them requires you to either have in-demand skills (a fairly short list, often requiring advanced education and years of experience), or significant capital (on the order of $2-$5 million to bring into the country to "invest") to gain permanent residency. Many also require you to learn the language. Some have age limits on immigrants, to prevent older folks from moving in to strip-mine their public health system.
The concept that a random disaffected American with no significant capital, lacking specialized skills, and with no command of the language would be welcomed is simply absurd.

Most (not necessarily all I guess if one thinks outside the box) decent countries that one would want to live in aren't easy to immigrate to, they have functional societies, functional governments and they don't allow unlimited immigration.
The U.S. has none of that and less as times go on, it's barely functional now and getting worse, but we sure have immigration and open borders advocates in the U.S. by the cartload, never mind the functional society part. I don't know that immigrants make it any less or more functional, I just know it's not functional for reasons having little to do with them, and the priority should be to try to copy countries that kind of work, unlike this country, before we skip straight to utopia. But then there is no easy way to get there from here, can't herd cats this crazy, it's a mental asylum as much as a country, so things will probably keep getting worse.
Just because you may not be able to get into other countries doesn't mean your life in the u.s. isn't likely to be nasty, brutish, and short (and younger people's more so) because both can be true. Bad luck of the draw to be born in the U.S. compared to a truly developed country, but there are worse lucks of the draw.
And yet this country is still the most sought after emigration destination in the world. Odd isn't it?

Alan, off topic but start a thread showing pictures of your trip. I love that stuff.
Even if we lived a reality where countries competed for citizens who could shop and change citizenship at will, I don’t think I’d want to live somewhere populated by people who made their choice based on how well the state would support them.
But I’m biased. I’d rather be a lamppost in Sheboygan than the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Even though I’ve not been to New Zealand, it’s one of the few places I think I could live happily and I don’t even need a visit to make that decision. But they wouldn’t want me I’m too old.

I remember that. You can’t just move to another country.
I remember her, too. It was a rough story, because she seemed to be acclimating incredibly well, her children were happy, they had a nice house, her work was supporting them, as I remember, anyway, and she was certain they were going to get the green card, whatever it is called there. They were there a long time. Last I remember she was looking at Pittsburgh for relocation.
Years ago when I got divorced I looked at other places to live, even trying to get Irish citizenship based on second husband's grandfather being born in Ireland (which we had been told.) Turns out it wasn't true, and he was Scottish, which I found out doing genealogy work. It was much cheaper to do the investment option then. We might have had a shot at Canada then as we had skills and were younger then.
Now, no one would want us (that sounds pathetic.) However, all the genealogy work I've done has cemented the feeling that my ancestors have been here since the start, and so have my husband's ancestors, and I'd hate to leave my homeland. I think I would feel like Philip Nolan if I had to leave.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m always amused when celebrities or whoever says they’re sick of stuff in the US, and want to move to Canada or elsewhere. They never stop to think that other countries actually have rules and won’t let you just move there. Hell, even Mexico has own rules.

Even further back was a poster who was English, married to an American, and they emigrated to Canada after several years in the U.S. she had some sort of business. They did not stay because the economic opportunities weren’t there for both to be employed. I remember she gave a very evenhanded account of the three countries she knew and said they are pros and cons to each one and she didn’t find any one to be better than the other.
Mr. Money Mustache himself, Pete, came to the U.s. from
Canada for the economic opportunity, as did his wife. He amassed the $$$ he wanted and has stayed here.He is now divorced.
I wouldn’t be surprised if either one of them move back to Canada when their child is of majority age , although I have not heard him say anything about that.

Yeah--but if you have enough money, you can buy your way into most countries. I'd have to use my charm, which hasn't got me far to this point.:~)
I had a co-worker who retired and split his year between Idaho and New Zealand. I ran into him at our mutual dentist's office in Portland after I moved to Washington, oddly. That's how he dealt with the pesky citizenship thing.
This country has been on a trajectory toward oligarchy for some time. At this point it's devolved into a kakistocracy.

A "trumper" is a person who will never go against trump no matter what he says or does. It is up to you to assume a put down.

A person who believes everything that comes out of of Trump's mouth even when confronted irrefutable truth
Example: Trump spasming on stage imitating a handicapped recorder, although being recorded he denied he did it and the trumpers believe him.

Of course heÂ’s funny. The leased wives. The serial bankruptcies. The megalomania. The bullying bluster and estrangement from the truth. The massive insecurity and minimal self-awareness. The compulsive tweeting. HeÂ’s at least as funny as Hitler.
You would think people could do better with the available material.

I don't know. Going up against Karen and piano playing kittens..... The public wants what the public wants. Good-bye to his same old, boring, repeated-attempts to grab center stage and, Hello to grandfather - granddaughter social-distancing dance videos! :D
I agree with Ldahl. The material to make humor of trump is virtually endless. Perhaps the people who would make it are too stressed out from watching him shred every norm and decency that we took for granted before the electoral college elected him. Hopefully we'll see a ton of it flood the entertainment market once we are safely rid of him. Because yeah, just like hitler there are a million directions one could go that have the potential to be hysterically funny.
This particular Hitler video has humor that is admittedly very regionally focused, but for anyone currently living in San Francisco this is ROFLMAO for ten minutes level funny. (and I hope the tacqueria Hola Hitler survives the pandemic lockdowns. I hear that the food is amazing.)

Is it just me, or is this a terrible time in our history for the art of political insult?
This president, for instance, should provide a rich vein of insult and mockery. But what do we get? His haircut and spray tan? Alec Baldwin?
Calling someone a “trumper”, as if that were some kind of final and unassailable put-down? What is this, middle school? Where’s the imagination, the creativity?
And as to his opposition, are people simply afraid? Is that why none of the best comedians do college tours anymore? Is that why late night TV has become such a humorless, formulaic wasteland? We live in an age where organizations fact-check satirical websites with a straight face. What has happened to us as a people? Cops are fleeing the onslaught of Woke Supremacists, and nobody seems to be laughing?
I got a pretty good chuckle from the baby Trump balloon the Brits had.

Deer Tick
