Has anyone else taking the Cologuard test? It is a home test for colon rectal cancer. On doctor’s order the company sends you the equipment, you produce the sample, and you mail it back.
Boy is that an engineering feat, the product they send! I wonder how much that product cost to design? It’s truly fascinating. It comes in a box that is reuseD to return the sample. All the pieces are engineered to fit in tightly to the box so that there is no um spillage.
Science may be great, but engineering is the bomb!

ROFLOL. My initial thought on the thread title was that this would be about the book - NOT. LOL

Everyone Poops by Tarō Gomisure, I know that book.
Yeah I did it last year- talk about over packaged! But I suppose that's better than having a packaging accident when mailing it back. (<- see what I did there).

On a more serious note - how accurate is this particular test? I've seen the commercials and listening to all the disclaimers, it has me wondering.
IIRC, its something like 92% accurate- not sure how they measure that. If you go this route, you retest every 2-3 years versus every 10 with a colonoscopy.
My doctor told me of you ever had polyps it will flag you as suspicious and you will have to undergo a colonoscopy anyways.
I was just going to ask about that. I had 3 removed three years ago. All benign but I’m about due for another one. I don’t mind. It wasn’t unpleasant especially.

Yeah, that GoLytely stuff makes you poop muchly!
No rotorooting of my innards yet. Doc mentioned it when I went for my annual last month, but since I don't have insurance until October, waiting until then. I had female surgery years ago and that's how I know about GoLytely. Nasty stuff, that!

I also read you cannot do the test if you have hemorrhoids. They could bleed so it would look like cancer.

I took the Cologuard and it said positive so I had to go the usual route. Turned out there was no problem???? I will never do a colonoscopy again.
Cologuard here. Once I figured out the procedure it was just a few minutes of unpleasantness. My doctor just started suggesting it as an option based on some recent information (didn't ask).

It is prescribed by physician, and the physician looks at results and accepts those results. So who knows, but it’s not some dweeb home test supported by medical science.

Frugal, why would you never do another colonoscopy?

Never have had a problem and will not have to take another for what? 10 years... at what point do you say NO?

For me it’s 70 because your lining thins and you have a bigger chance of having your colon perforated which normally means you get septic and die.
Barbara Ehrenreich on her decision not to have further cancer screenings: "I'm old enough to die." That's good enough for me.

At age 80 they always stop. Sometimes age 70 is your last recommended one.
They were trying to coerce my mother to have her first mammogram in her mid-seventies. I don't know if she ever had it. I hope not.

A mammogram found my mom’s stage one breast cancer at 78. She had a mastectomy with no chemo and lived another 12 years.

She probably would have lived on anyway. Many stage one breast cancers never progress, or progress very slowly--especially at that age (per Susan Love, MD). At any rate, my mother didn't have breast cancer, as far as we know.
Medical beliefs are like politics. There is little chance of persuading someone who holds opposing views. I tend to think that the treatment can be worse than the illness after a certain age. It is interesting to me that screening tests which are a big money maker for medical providers and facilities have fallen drastically since the virus hit us. Old people are huge profit makers for the medical industry. MIL is 85 and yet her doctors insist on MRIs/CT scan for every little twitch or pain...even with COVID going on. I am cynical for sure. My parents were doctors and pharmacists. I think they would be appalled at what has happened to their professions.

My 87 year old mother recently found a lump on her breast. Had it removed and four lymph nodes. Cancer in the lump and first lymph node - other three were clear. She decided again chemo/radiation treatments and is opting for estrogen treatment and regular testing. While I want my mother to live FOREVER!, I'm glad she is happy with her decisions re:treatment and I'm glad she has a doctor who respects those decisions.
