I have always filled out my census right away, but DS is concerned it will somehow interfere with his application for disability. We agreed to fill it out online at the last minute. Due to covid the deadline has been extended several times and is now October 31. Today a census taker came and knocked on my door. I was not happy and I did not answer. He left a form that if we do not call in or fill out our information within 2 days he is coming back. There are over 2 months until the deadline and I feel harassed. What do you think?

I think you should do it online now, and not worry. Plenty of better conspiracy theories out there to spend your time on.

I did mine online as soon as I received it. And that is a bizarre theory.

Just yesterday I completed the form for Hermann house. I swear, we did not get anything in the mail for this address! I was responding yesterday to a door knocker thingie left.

Then later yesterday I helped my neighbor who is working the census find building managers for two apartment buildings in our neighborhood. He knows few people, I know many more than he knows.Through my contacts he should be able to hook up with someone in charge of those buildings.

If you want to get rid of people at your front door do like a friend's MIL (who lives with friend and her husband) did when some unwanted religious proselytizers rang the bell. Just crack open the door and say "we got the virus in here". The people literally ran away. To be fair, MIL and friend actually did have the virus, but there's no law that you can't lie to someone ringing your doorbell.

The census has nothing to do with a disability claim. Do it online and don’t mention it to him.

What do you think?I think you should just fill it out and be done with it. There's no reason to think it will have any impact on future disability benefits.

Summary
The U.S. census is a direct count of every resident. Required by the Constitution, it has taken place every decade since 1790.
The data it collects is used to determine political representation in Congress and to direct nearly $900 billion in federal funding.

Every person should care that they are represented and that they are considered for any federal funding.

I think fill it out online. I did it when it first came. I think your son is worrying about nothing, and I would not want to contend with a live census taker, would rather do the online.

Having seen census results from the past, I was sorely disappointed that it was so perfunctory. I filled it out on line at the first opportunity.

Apparently they did not produce a long form this time. So many important issues brought to light by that in the past such as demographics of households that spend $$$ on athletic shoes.

I am sorta being smart aleck, sorta not. Long form questions did give interesting data.

I remember 40 years ago that my grandparents received the long form. When we went to visit for spring break they asked my father to help complete it since neither of them had gotten more than about a third grade education. It was interesting how nervous my step-grandmother was about the answers. Things like insisting that her former husband be listed as deceased (by that point he was) rather than the truth which was that he had left home one morning and never came back.

I got the long form in 1980, it was my first census form and I didn't immediately realize everyone didn't get the same thing. I don't remember what type of questions were asked but I do recall that it wasn't just long, it was really long. The ones I've received since then have been a breeze, this year's took maybe a minute to complete.

I got the long form in 2000. I believe it was 21-22 pages. It was a packet.

I also thought everybody got that one too and wondered why everyone looked at me weird when I complained about the intrusiveness of the questions.

I was delighted it was so perfunctory. I identified as “mongrel”.
