View Full Version : The Debate
Biden is too polite for this venue, makes him look weaker than he is. Trump interrupts everyone constantly, which annoys me cause I want to hear both sides.
That’s my summary so far.
If calling your opponent a clown is too polite, I guess that’s true. Based on both candidates’ performance so far, I think the sponsors should bring in third grade teachers as moderators. That might serve to keep the level of insults and interruptions at a reasonable level.
Trump refused to state that he condemns white supremacy.
I do wish they would turn off the mic during the two minutes on each topic when the opponent has the floor and they are not supposed to be speaking.
Trump pretty much turned a civil debate into a WWF free for all, which was no surprise. Biden is just not a charismatic speaker and towed his practiced lines. The fact checkers will have their work cut out for them. I didn't pick out much new from either. It was a little disappointing. I agree, the moderator should have a choice to cut off the microphones when the rules of debate are exceeded
It's sad to think we have devolved to such lunacy - what a circus. It didn't help either one of the candidates or really clarify any issues. Actually, Trump reminds me of some of the bullies I remember in grade school so a third grade teacher as moderator might be appropriate.

Trump is a jerk and kept interrupting. What was Biden supposed to do?
Right. If he does nothing he is weak. If he fights back people say he is calling Trump names too.
Lose-lose situation.
Precisely no one will change their mind after this. We all learned that Biden is too polite and trump is a stupid bully. We all knew that. I agree with Tammy that they should have cut the mic during the uninterrupted response parts. Since they didn’t Biden needs to learn to say STFU repeatedly as necessary before the next debate.
And now in his final statement trump is spewing qanon level absurdities about fictitious voter fraud. This traitor can’t leave soon enough. Why does he hate this country and our ideals so much? And why do his supporters support this?
This is the first time I have not watched a presidential debate since I was a little kid and my parents wouldn't let me stay up late. As expected I did not miss anything.

That's a good idea!

Funny, on CBS this morning they said that they had received mail from circus people who were offended that they compared the debate to a circus, since many circus people are much more reasonable than that.

Yes! And it's just as frightening that he has so many supporters. It's a reality I'm really having trouble understanding.
On the plus side, I imagine membership in the Proud Boys and other domestic terrorist organizations will spike, now that President Crazypants endorsed them. Yeah, a kill switch would have been nice.
My thought was to stop the clock every time the opponent interrupts, thus giving the person interrupted their full time. ( I taught 4th grade for 31 years...) But, a silencing mic would be great. I was watching 8-9:30 Van der Volk on PBS, but husband was watching it in the other room I did see the last hour...not surprised, but truly himself calling for so called poll watchers which are in reality intimidators is typical but still appalling to me.

Call me a coward, but I really wish there were somewhere sane to escape to. That this has gone so far astounds and sickens me. What's the 25th amendment there for, anyway?

stopping the clock is good, agreed.
I didn’t watch the debate because I don’t have interest in the insanity.
I’m not intimidated by poll watchers, they are part of the workings of democracy. I will bet the majority of Americans didn’t know that there was an official role they could take at the polls and that is the role of poll watcher. In my area they register for that role. So it’s not like people just go into polling places and hang around casually without permissions– they may not.
Here It’s always the Democrats hanging out As official poll watchers.Remember all those accusations last go round about machine voting irregularities,
Diebold machines, and etc.? I’m not sure what the poll watchers were watching for, I’m not even sure that it was an anti-Republican effort because well, there aren’t any Republicans here in the city. It’s just that Poll watchers do exist here it’s part of the democratic process.

I agree. I don't consider myself a coward, but definitely would like an escape from the insanity, violence and nastiness that seems rampant within this country right now. I am grateful that I can still see every day goodness and kindness between people, because otherwise it would be easy - at least for me - to fall into depression and nihilism.

Actually you did. It reiterated what a jackass trump is. If you were not sure before, this would have sealed the deal.

You definitely are not alone.

I was going to say the same thing--where have you been, Cathy?

I often argue for reading the transcripts. The visual setups often detract from an analysis of what is being said (although frankly at this point in who cares?). I certainly did read the transcripts with the Republican primaries in 2016 and Trump stood out in a way no other candidate did, in that he couldn't form a coherent argument or sentence, that's not about agreement or factuality, when I agreed with little, and even thought Carly Fiona was a far worse human being with far worse policies, it's basic logical structure, does not cohere.
But even so the visual spectacle of the Trump trainwreck last night was a sight to behold, as in dang give Trump a Tony award for portraying the power mad man-child king raging at the waning of his power.

Biden was in an impossible position. Some people wanted him to be more aggressive towards trump. Some people wanted him to take a more ‘high road’ approach befitting the office he’s running for. There is no middle ground that will satisfy those two groups.
At the end of the day trump needs to win back the suburban voters that abandoned his party in 2018 if he hopes to win by some method that doesn’t include large scale cheating. This debate performance most certainly did not win back those voters. The only people impressed by trump’s debate performance were the people who were already 110% voting for trump. Everyone else saw it for the blazing dumpster fire that he is.
I personally am disappointed in both and I expected better from Biden. This is not going to end well is my take. Rob
I think Trump's strategy of berating, name calling, and interrupting was intended to rattle Biden and make him lose his composure and train of thought. I also think his speaking style is affected by his stuttering early in life. He's not my ideal candidate but as the campaigns go on I get a better impression that he is a decent person, within the limits of politics anyway.

Biden did a good job considering the circumstances. It was a no win situation for him.
