Got the call a little bit ago. Just got hired at the Arizona grocery chain for a front end supervisor position. So glad. Was getting antsy not working truth be told. We'll see how it goes - I'm told I pick up things quickly. Rob

Congrats. So customer service/cashier type stuff?Supervising cashiers and courtesy clerks, customer issues/complaints, safe drops, scheduling after awhile, paperwork, back up cashiering, dealing with Corporate when left as MOD, all kinds of (basic) duties.
I'm actually excited to try out something other than f and b/hospitality. Rob

That's great, Rob! I wish you luck and hope you enjoy your new opportunity!
Good for you, Rob. The local manager at my favourite large grocery is regularly visible and approachable doing the odd things like tidying an item in the wrong spot, picking up a broken item and other small actions that tell me that he is attentive and in charge at all times. I believe that this helps his staff feel supported as well as they know he is quietly seeing what is going on with the contrary public.

That sounds great, especially if your customers drop apples and things like that! <wink>
Congratulations!
Congrats, Rob...I hope things go well! Stay safe!
When do you start? If you mentioned that, I didn’t catch it. And what hours will you be working? Days, evenings, etc?
Looking forward to hearing how you like it?

Looking forward to hearing how you like it?Variable hours with a slant towards nights which I prefer anyway. I start in two weeks. So looking forward to giving it my best shot - in something outside food and beverage. I'll definitely post how it goes. Rob

And Thank You to everyone for your good wishes. Honestly? I never really believed I could break out of f and b - but to be fair, my last job (mostly) rocked. Rob
Rob, I’m going to make one strong recommendation about your new job. Do not, and I mean this, absolutely do NOT bring up anything political at the new job. Keep your mouth shut about it. I don’t care what you know about the neighborhood, etc. I have worked with people in the past who bombard you immediately upon starting about their political leanings and pet causes. It is a massive turnoff.
Well said, Tradd. These will be coworkers and customers to be respected, not friends or adherents of any persuasion pro or con.

Given your many posts here on politics, it seemed quite possible you would discuss politics at work. And given the current situation, a heads up seemed prudent. I’ve worked with those before who would not stop talking about the topic, even after management told them to stop.

Agree with Tradd. You could make it a hostile work environment, rather quick, not to mention the potential firing from losing the other party customer base.
And I do have to ask - Rob, are you going to be able to remain professional if you have to deal with a cop? They may be in the shop in uniform off duty or on duty if there is a shoplifting incident or the like.

Rob, has stated in the past that he has good boundaries while at work. No clue why some people are asking the same questions. Being at work and on a forum are 2 very different things. I would be offended at the questions if I was Rob.

I have not seen those posts. And working in a grocery store has a lot more public interaction than working at a convention center.

Oh, I’m sure Rob will keep his political ideas to himself unless actually invited to give forth.
I am most interested in Rob’s management of the grocery cart phenomenon in Phoenix. He will be front and center seeing how the recovery of those carts are built into the store’s budget. It may well be viewed by store management as just the cost of doing business to go retrieve grocery carts, but there is for sure a cost.

People either know how to act professionally or they don’t. Yes Rob has been asked this before.

But Thank You TT for grasping that at work I'm all business. Rob

Notice I said PUBLIC. You’re going to have all sorts walking in at a grocery store.
I’m truly not trying to bust Rob’s balls. But I was genuinely curious how someone with an oft-stated fear of cops would handle it if he had to deal with one at work.
And yes, good for you for getting a job.

I have been less than thrilled with our local police but it doesn’t prevent me from treating them courteously and I am sure Rob will do the same. If you cannot separate your professional life from your personal life than you will have big problems. Knowing this is really basic information.

I have to admit that going to work now does raise virus concerns for me. I think I have it a *little* better than Rob as I am not in a workplace that is open to the public. It's a huge warehouse and, during work, most folks do well keeping socially distanced and masks are worn AT ALL TIME - only exception is eating/drinking. I do know that people *touch* a lot, so I do hand-washing and sanitizer at work, then immediately upon getting home, I shower. Time will tell!!
Continued good luck to everyone in their new jobs!!! Stay safe and healthy!
