View Full Version : Surgery complications

Twenty plus years ago I had my gall bladder removed - it was routine even back then. Recently my youngest had the same surgery - but it did not go well.
Simple day surgery has turned into 3 post surgery trips to the ER, the latest via the ambulance, and I think we are at day 18 in the hospital.

She is being transfer to the major teaching hospital in the state to see if they can help her. To say the least it has been a nightmare. Post surgery she has
been staying with us (when not in the hospital) so her mom can care for her while her husband works.

She is battling duodenitis, pancreatitis, stomach not working, bruised liver, etc. Constant vomiting has led to the post surgery ER visits, being severely dehydrated,
low sodium caused her to have a seizure, and pass out, etc. etc. She now has a TPN bag to receive her nutrients via a picc line. And these are just the highlights :(

With Covid-19 she is only allowed one visitor a day and it has to be the same person, so she is lonely, so tired of being sick with no end in sight. I have learned way more about the gastrointestinal system that I wanted to know. Her care at the hospital has been good, but there is nothing like being home in your own bed.

I am really ready for 2020 to be over! Praying for a miracle. Everyone says the new hospital has the best doctors in the state and that is what she needs!

Oh wow - that’s just too many stressors all at once.

In my experience, the teaching hospitals often get to the bottom of these unusual cases pretty quickly. They have all the specialists and the latest research to act upon. I received my nursing degree at one in Ohio, and worked in a different one in Phoenix for the past 10 years.

I am praying for a miracle with you. It sounds like she will be in the right place with the best people.

Greg, I am so sorry that she is going through that, especially now, and that she can't get visitors, and she must be so tired and exhausted. I am praying for her and for you and all of your family.

I hope they get to the bottom of it quickly. Twice my mother has almost died but the local hospital realized their limitations and sent her to a teaching hospital which quickly located the problem and fixed it. It is harder to see things happen to your loved one than to undergo them yourself, so I will pray for her and your entire family.

Sending good thoughts of support to all to quickly resolve this situation. It is sooooo frustrating watching this happen to a loved one. Covid is complicating things further.

What an ordeal, especially for a young person to endure. I hope they figure it out soon; it helps to have youth on her side.

Thank you all for the kind words of encouragement. We have had no good news since this all began, nothing seems to be getting better. When she met with the doctor before the surgery she asked "I am not going to die am I?" We all laughed, given how routine this surgery is. She asked my wife the same thing last night, it wasn't so funny then. She is scared, we all are. Thank you for all your prayers and concern.

Teaching hospitals make a lot of difference. I know 2 people only alive because they transferred to one. I really hope it’s resolved quickly.

I can't imagine the stress and worry you must be feeling. So glad she is being transferred to a teaching hospital. No doubt she will get the best minds working towards a solution. Please keep us posted. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Great News! After 31 days? I have lost count - since the end of September, my daughter is home from the hospital and doing so much better. Still must have a feeding tube (now through her nose and down past the injured part of the small intestine) but her spirits are up and she is home! Doctor at teaching hospital said, "I don't know if anyone has told you (and they hadn't) but you will recover from this 100% and live a normal life! That was the best thing we had heard. Especially seems we were seeing no progress at the other hospital. We feel so very blessed.
Her first venture out today - Target! She is my wife's daughter!!

My SIL used up all his PTO her first week she was in the hospital. If he was going to see her after work she couldn't have any others visitors. One visitor a day - has to be same person. So it was very lonely for her. After she left for the teaching hospital his boss pulled him aside and said you need to be with your wife. He told him we will clock you in and out each day and his boss gave him 40 hours of his PTO and other employees are also donating their PTO. How cool was that?! Now that she is home he can care for her. They are newlyweds of less than three months when this all came down.

Hey Greg, I haven't been here in awhile, but wanted to say how happy I am for your daughter! Also, did they ever say what actually happened to her? Diagnosis?
I hope she continues to get stronger every day.

She has been home from the teaching hospital for over 10 days and is like a totally different person. Still on the feeding bag for 18 hours a day, but is starting to eat solids, hasn't thrown up since her discharge. Is even going into work for a few hours tomorrow! Huge blessing. Our prayers have been answered! Her official diagnosis from the teaching hospital is that she was being treated because of the injury to the duodenum (during gall bladder surgery). Basically it was swelled up so much it would not allow anything to pass out of the stomach into the small intestine, so she would just throw everything up. There are no "routine" surgeries!

Hmmm.....I would wonder why this happened. Sounds pretty unusual during GB surgery. Not to jump on law suits, but dang.......she went through so much.
