Thought that this might help in choosing the best mask for ourselves. I am in the process of sewing masks for myself and others so found this quite interesting
Three-layer with melt-blown, non-woven propylene between two layers of cotton performed as well in the research as the N95 masks.

Three-layers with melt-blown, non-woven propylene doesn't make it sound very breathable.
My SIL had made masks back in the spring out of tightly woven fabrics and I found that I had to switch to the disposable kind in the summer because his were not only difficult to breathe through, but they were also hot!

Mostly, I have multi-layer ones with a filter pocket (and filters). I'm glad they're doing this research, if it comes a little late.

Real N95 masks, while appearing simple, are actually pretty sophisticated bits of technology, and among other things, use electrostatic charge on the materials to trap particles much much smaller than the opening in the filter media. Which is one of the reasons they degrade with use or time.

I just got in a small batch of “KN95” masks and who knows if they really meet that criteria.but they don’t work for me because they fit over my ears, not elastic around my head. But I may be able to modify them.

I believe one of the good results to come out of this will be effective, well-engineered, protective masks widely available to the public.
