Let’s make fun of furniture manufacturers and some of their clients. Probably I am one of those! Haha. I just signed up for the app of a high end online furniture purveyor, Perigold, which is a subdivision of Wayfair.
i’m an old fogey and there are so many things to make fun of on that site. So so many. Oh my, good Lord, and oy vey!
There tends be a lot of old fogeys on this website so perhaps you will enjoy my tour through the land of ridiculous.
First on our stop today is this sofa. When I first saw it I had to do a double check of the website because I thought perhaps I ended up on a thrift store site. The sofa is actually for sale, new. You could pay a lot of money for it.
Everything about it says circa 1986. I’m not gonna tell you how much it is and you are cheating if you look it up. But I would like you to guess how much you have to pay to have the sofa in your living room. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if many of us don’t already have this sofa in our living room from decades ago!
How much do you think it is? This is on the higher end of spectrum in this higher end website just to give you a hint.

The number of incredibly ugly very expensive sofas astonishes me. Who buys these things? Arabian princes? These are too gaudy for even Donald Trump.

all these over $10,000.

The floral sofa with design sensibility circa 1986 is $11,420.
yes.
of course those circa 1978 pillows in that quilted grey poly fabric drives up the price I guess.
There's a sucker born every minute.
These are too gaudy for even Donald Trump.

Lies!haha. I like to think Melania, being
European, brings a European sensibility to Trump decor.

So very ugly:))
I really don't much mind the first example--those pillows are a drab abomination--but the rest of them are grotesque. We used to have a furniture store in the Portland area whose offerings were notorious for being cheap with a lot of rococo ornamentation. That's what the latter pix remind me of.
Who even uses chesterfields anymore? They are uncomfortable, crowd guests who roll into one another and these structure are very aggressive on use of space. I spent the money for comfortable chairs that can be rearranged as needed, easy to clean around and replace when necessary.

You know it costs money to buy these, and keep them in packaging, so you can sell them years later for a huge markup, as nostalgia furniture.:laff:
People really buy this stuff??? At those prices?

oh, agreed! I liked the first one in 1986. I love bun feet then and even now even though they are outdated. If somebody held a gun to my head I could decorate a little cottage using that floral sofa and it wouldn’t be hideous, and you’re right those gray cushions have to go.
But the thing is, the thing costs $11,000. I can pick one up at St. Vincent Depaul Thrift store for $75.
Ha--the feet were part of the appeal. My grandmother had a large, heavy (pre-1930?) sofa with bun feet. It was reupholstered a few times--a classic shape. And I liked the fabric colors. I would NEVER pay that price; so not necessary.
I would probably not buy anything bigger than a love seat, personally.

Sometimes I can be all high-and-mighty with DH who might be bewildered over a Jackson Pollack painting or an Avant-garde couture creation, telling him "Oh, you just don't understand the aesthetic."
But, I don't understand the aesthetic of that couch for $11,000. No way.

I pulled these photos off the same website. The same manufacturer makes them. They seem deliberately retro fugly, so perhaps it is a tongue-in-cheek aesthetic? Perhaps ballers and rap artists have these in their basement rec rooms.

All are very expensive, they run $5,000-$7,000. They are made by Old Hickory Tannery.

My daughter and son-in-law are coming tonight and I'll ask their opinions. They're deep into mid-century modern and they are also both artists and designers. And my son-in-law is a picker, so he has a sense of the market. I'll see what they say.

All right, I will make myself let go of this obsession, but I have more one more thing to add about Old Hickory Tannery company.
I went to their website. They emphasize that they troll alleys and attics to find inspiration for their”classic” pieces. And here’s a picture on the website that is supposed to promote their product. This is so ridiculous it seems like a parody. This photo looks like furniture poor people set out in their yards.

I have seen that first and second sofa at the thrift I swear, granted a higher end consignment store type thrift tends to carry pieces like that, too nice for The Goodwill or Salvation Army, but a thrift still. If it's one's type of thing and I don't find it ugly just not my style, it's ok for high end thrift store prices.

I agree, IL, but DD/SIL aesthetic is not too far different. They have a lamp that they LOVE--I wish I had a picture of it. The lamp is a porcelain sculpture of a horse reared up on its hind legs and the shade is the very recognizable 60-s kind--very wide and same width top and bottom. I'm anxious to hear what they say about your pics.

My cats would LOVE hiding under that chair with the fringes at the bottom. Or at least they would until they'd removed all of them. I had, way back when, one of those huge overstuffed 30s sofas with the big fringes around the bottom (like this, only maroon) https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/sofas/1930s-mohair-sofa/id-f_836013/
It was right dangerous to try to get out of, because it was cat central, and they LOVED swiping at ankles through the fringe. But at least it was a FREE sofa!!
There's some uggglllyy expensive stuff out there!
